The Riff Report Blog Edition — where even the history lessons come with riffs and chaos
December 5th might look like any other chilly winter day…
But in the world of rock ’n’ roll?
This date is absolutely heaving with legendary moments, iconic releases, outrageous musical milestones, and one very important rock-baby arrival.
Grab your battle-jacket, pour a festive pint, and let’s march through the noise. 🎸🔥
🎄 2004 — BAND AID 20 TAKE OVER THE CHARTS
This was the era of spiky hair, studded belts and iPod Nanos, and somehow the rock gods managed to assemble a monstrous all-star crew:
Bono, Paul McCartney, Chris Martin, Thom Yorke, and a load of early-2000s icons.
Their updated version of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” absolutely dominated the charts overseas, landing straight at number one, mun!
A charity anthem powered by two generations of rock royalty? Proper tidy.
🎤 1968 — GRAHAM NASH DIPS OUT & MAKES HISTORY
Graham Nash said, “Right then lads, I’m off,” and walked away from The Hollies.
Not out of boredom — but because he was about to form Crosby, Stills & Nash, a band whose harmonies were so smooth they could butter your toast.
A huge fork in the road that reshaped folk-rock forever.
🐷 2005 — ROGER WATERS RELEASES IN THE FLESH
Former Pink Floyd mastermind Roger Waters blessed the world with a two-disc live album capturing four massive U.S. performances.
It’s moody. It’s atmospheric. It’s the perfect soundtrack for staring dramatically out the window while your neighbour hangs tacky Christmas lights.
A delicious slice of post-Floyd Waters brilliance.
👑 2004 — SIR ELTON JOHN HONOURED IN WASHINGTON
The Rocket Man himself strutted into the Kennedy Center and walked out with one of America’s highest cultural honours:
🎖️ The Kennedy Center Honor
For a man who spent decades making pianos sexier than guitars, this was a lush, well-deserved milestone.
⚡ 1981 — BLACK FLAG DROP DAMAGED, THE HARDCORE BLUEPRINT
This is where things get LOUD.
December 5th, 1981 saw the release of Black Flag’s legendary debut album Damaged — a record so raw it feels like being punched lovingly in the face by punk itself.
It became the holy scripture of hardcore, inspiring generations of basement gigs, sweaty mosh pits, and questionable tattoos.
🚀 1973 — PAUL MCCARTNEY UNLEASHES BAND ON THE RUN
One of rock’s greatest comeback flexes.
After messy post-Beatles press and the chaos around Wings, McCartney dropped “Band on the Run” and “Jet,” turning the album into his most successful solo release EVER.
A proper, “Don’t worry boys, I’ve got this,” moment.
👶 2005 — CHRIS CORNELL BECOMES A DAD
On this day, Audioslave and Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell welcomed his son, Christopher Cornell.
A soft, wholesome moment in a sea of distortion and fuzz pedals.
Even rock gods get dad duties, mun.
🎸 SO THERE YOU HAVE IT — DECEMBER 5TH ROCKS HARDER THAN MOST DAYS
From punk revolutions to folk-rock reinventions, from McCartney’s triumph to Christmas chart domination…
December 5th is absolutely stacked with history that shaped the riffs, rhythms, and chaos we still love today.
🔥 Another loud day in the book of rock history — tidy as you like, mun. 🔥
