🎸🔥 From singing at Smithy and Nessa’s wedding to chasing his dreams of becoming Wales’s next big rock star, Oscar Hartland is proving there’s considerably more to him than his famous television nickname! The 17-year-old actor and musician has unleashed his new single ‘Wild Bull’, assembled a young Welsh rock band and revealed his ambitions to follow in the footsteps of the mighty STEREOPHONICS!
Well, well, well, butt!
What’s occurin’?
Remember little Neil the Baby from Gavin & Stacey?
The youngster who melted hearts across the country when he performed The Beatles’ Blackbird during the sitcom’s emotional 2024 Christmas finale?
Well, he’s not such a baby anymore!
In fact, he’s swapping the world of television comedy for electric guitars, drum kits, recording studios and dreams of conquering the Welsh rock scene.
And he’s not thinking small, either.
Oscar Hartland, the 17-year-old musician from Machen in Caerphilly county, has revealed that he wants his band to follow in the footsteps of Welsh rock giants STEREOPHONICS.
Now that’s what we call ambition, mun!
Forget spending your teenage years worrying about whether you’ve finished your homework or what your mates are getting up to on Saturday night.
Oscar’s got his sights set on something much bigger.
He’s dreaming of making music that will connect with audiences across Wales, Britain and hopefully beyond.
And considering he’s already performed in front of millions of television viewers, appeared on The Voice Kids and recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studios, he’s certainly got an interesting head start.
But don’t go thinking this is another television actor having a little dabble in music because somebody told him he could make a few quid.
Oscar wants to be taken seriously as a musician.
And here at The Riff Report, where supporting emerging Welsh rock talent is practically part of our DNA, that’s exactly the kind of story we love getting stuck into!
🎤 From Neil The Baby To Welsh Rock Star In The Making!
For millions of television viewers, Oscar Hartland will always be associated with one of Britain’s most beloved comedy series.
Created by James Corden and Ruth Jones, Gavin & Stacey became a cultural phenomenon after first arriving on our screens in 2007.
The show brought the wonderful madness of Welsh family life to audiences across the country, with memorable characters including Nessa, Smithy, Bryn, Pam and, of course, Stacey herself.
And somewhere among all that glorious chaos was little Neil.
The son of Nessa and Smithy.
Affectionately known to viewers as Neil the Baby.
Oscar appeared in the third series and returned for the 2019 Christmas special.
But it was his appearance in the show’s final episode, broadcast on Christmas Day 2024, that gave viewers a completely different glimpse of his abilities.
During the wedding celebrations for Nessa and Smithy, Oscar performed a heartfelt rendition of The Beatles’ Blackbird.
It became one of the memorable musical moments of the finale.
And for anyone who had only known him as a child actor, it was a rather impressive introduction to his singing voice.
The episode attracted approximately 12.3 million viewers on Christmas Day, eventually reaching 19.11 million after seven days of consolidated viewing.
That’s an extraordinary audience for any young performer.
Most teenage musicians are delighted if they manage to get 50 people into a local pub to watch them play.
Oscar was singing in front of millions.
No pressure there then, butt! 😂
But while television fame introduced him to an enormous audience, music has become an increasingly important part of his ambitions.
And now he’s determined to create something of his own.
🎸 Oscar Hartland Wants To Follow In The Footsteps Of STEREOPHONICS!
During a recent interview with Lucy Owen on BBC Radio Wales, Oscar discussed his hopes for the future of his music career.
And one particular comment immediately caught our attention.
The youngster revealed that he wants his band to become:
“The next ’Phonics, or something like that.”
Now, that’s a pretty enormous pair of boots to fill!
For anyone unfamiliar with Welsh rock history, STEREOPHONICS are one of the biggest musical success stories ever to emerge from Cymru.
Formed in Cwmaman in the Cynon Valley, the band developed from a relatively small Welsh outfit into one of Britain’s most successful rock acts.
Led by vocalist and guitarist Kelly Jones, STEREOPHONICS built their reputation through powerful live performances, distinctive vocals and memorable songwriting.
Their catalogue includes classics such as:
- 🎸 Local Boy In The Photograph
- 🔥 The Bartender And The Thief
- 🤘 Dakota
- 🎶 Maybe Tomorrow
- 🎸 Just Looking
- 🔥 Have A Nice Day
- 🎤 A Thousand Trees
From small venues and local gigs to enormous stadium concerts, STEREOPHONICS demonstrated what Welsh musicians could achieve without abandoning their roots.
And that’s clearly an inspiring example for someone like Oscar.
But the youngster isn’t simply trying to copy Kelly Jones and his bandmates.
He wants to find his own sound.
Something modern.
Something distinctive.
And, most importantly, something that represents where he comes from.
Because Wales doesn’t need another carbon copy of an established band. We need young musicians creating the next chapter of our own rock history!
And that, butt, is a challenge worth getting excited about.
🔥 ‘Wild Bull’ – Oscar Hartland’s New Single Is Inspired By Growing Up In The Welsh Valleys!
Oscar’s latest musical statement comes in the shape of Wild Bull, released on Friday 30 October 2026.
The song draws inspiration from his experiences growing up in the South Wales Valleys.
And judging by the story behind it, the title couldn’t be more appropriate!
Oscar has spoken about the restless energy of his younger years, describing the challenges of growing up, playing rugby, getting into scrapes and trying to find your place in the world.
Anyone who’s grown up in a Welsh Valleys community will probably recognise at least a little of that picture.
You’ve got your mates.
You’ve got school.
You’ve got rugby.
You’ve got that seemingly endless teenage energy.
And you’ve got the occasional daft decision that seemed like an excellent idea at the time.
Usually followed by your mother shouting your full name from the other end of the street!
Oscar has explained that Wild Bull explores the idea of embracing your personality rather than constantly trying to hold yourself back.
It’s about youthful energy, individuality and accepting the person you’re becoming.
And those are themes that can translate naturally into rock music.
After all, how many great rock songs have been written about growing up, rebelling against expectations and trying to work out where you belong?
Thousands!
From the working-class storytelling of BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN to the everyday observations of early STEREOPHONICS records, rock music has always had room for songs about ordinary lives.
And there’s nothing wrong with telling those stories from a Welsh perspective.
In fact, we could do with more of it.
🎶 A New Sound With Proper Welsh Roots
Oscar told BBC Radio Wales that listeners have been describing the band’s developing sound as rock-oriented, while recognising its strong Welsh identity.
His ambitions extend beyond releasing individual songs.
He wants to develop a musical identity that people can connect with.
And that distinction matters.
It’s one thing to release a single, collect a few streams and move on to the next project.
It’s something else entirely to build a lasting community of listeners who care about what you’re creating.
That’s what the best bands manage to achieve.
The music becomes more than a collection of songs.
It becomes something people feel part of.
And for a young musician looking towards the future, that’s a worthwhile ambition.
🥁 Meet The Young Welsh Musicians Behind Oscar’s Sound!
While Oscar is the familiar face thanks to his television career, he’s not building his musical future entirely on his own.
He’s working alongside three young musicians who are helping to develop the band’s sound.
🎸 The Current Line-Up
- Oscar Hartland – Vocals and Frontman: The singer, songwriter and former Gavin & Stacey actor leading the project.
- Cayden Hughes – Bass Guitar: Providing the low-end foundation.
- Aiden Williams – Drums: The drummer helping drive the band’s rhythm.
- Deacon Ball – Electric Guitar: Bringing electric guitar to the developing Welsh rock sound.
Together, the musicians have spent recent months working on their musical direction and exploring what makes their sound distinctive.
And that process is something many young bands experience.
You can assemble four talented musicians in a rehearsal room.
You can learn your favourite songs.
You can spend hours experimenting with amplifiers and pedalboards.
But discovering a sound that genuinely feels like your own?
That’s where things start getting interesting.
It takes time.
It takes practice.
And it usually involves a fair few arguments about whether the guitarist is playing too loudly.
Although, let’s face it, butt, the guitarist is always playing too loudly! 😂
The important thing is that Oscar and his bandmates are taking their musical development seriously.
And it’s encouraging to see another young Welsh rock outfit with ambitions beyond simply playing a handful of local gigs.
🎤 The Voice Kids – Where The Rock Dream Started Taking Shape!
Before his emotional performance in the Gavin & Stacey finale, Oscar had already demonstrated his musical ambitions on national television.
In 2023, aged just 14, he appeared on ITV’s The Voice Kids.
And rather than choosing a conventional pop ballad, he decided to perform something with a bit more bite.
His audition song?
FOO FIGHTERS – ‘My Hero’!
Now we’re talking, mun!
Choosing a Dave Grohl anthem is a pretty decent way of announcing your rock credentials.
The performance impressed the judges, and Oscar progressed to the competition’s battle stages as part of Danny Jones’s team.
He had previously spoken about wanting audiences to recognise him for his musical abilities rather than only his childhood television role.
And that’s completely understandable.
Being associated with a hugely successful television programme is an extraordinary achievement.
But it can also create expectations.
People remember the character.
They remember the famous scenes.
They remember the nickname.
And sometimes, it becomes difficult to establish a separate identity.
For Oscar, music offers the opportunity to do exactly that.
He’s no longer simply the youngster who appeared alongside James Corden and Ruth Jones.
He’s a musician trying to build a career on his own terms.
And the connections between his music and acting careers became particularly interesting when his Voice Kids performance caught the attention of the Gavin & Stacey creators.
That helped lead to his musical appearance in the show’s 2024 finale.
Talk about everything coming full circle!
🏆 That Unforgettable Gavin & Stacey Christmas Finale!
Let’s revisit that performance for a moment.
Because it’s a remarkable piece of Oscar’s developing story.
The final episode of Gavin & Stacey was one of the biggest British television events of 2024.
After years of speculation about whether the show would return, fans finally got the conclusion they’d been hoping for.
And there was little Neil, all grown up, performing at his parents’ wedding celebrations.
His version of The Beatles’ Blackbird provided a moving musical moment in an episode already overflowing with nostalgia.
It also introduced his singing abilities to people who might never have watched The Voice Kids or discovered his independent music.
And while the exposure was undoubtedly significant, Oscar has remained appreciative of the support he’s received from his former castmates.
During his BBC Radio Wales interview, he explained that the encouragement from people associated with the series had continued.
That’s lovely to hear.
Especially considering how difficult the entertainment industry can be for young performers.
Having established actors and writers supporting your ambitions is certainly a positive thing.
But ultimately, Oscar still has to prove himself through his music.
And that’s where the next chapter begins.
🎸 Recording At The Legendary Rockfield Studios In Monmouthshire!
Now here’s a detail that should get every Welsh rock fan excited.
Oscar has been recording music at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire.
Yes, THAT Rockfield Studios!
One of the most famous residential recording studios in the history of British music.
Located near Monmouth, the studio has welcomed an astonishing collection of internationally celebrated artists.
Among the musicians and bands associated with Rockfield are:
- 👑 QUEEN
- 🎸 OASIS
- 🤘 BLACK SABBATH
- 🔥 MOTÖRHEAD
- 🎶 COLDPLAY
- 🎸 SIMPLE MINDS
- 🤘 THE STONE ROSES
- 🔥 IGGY POP
And that’s only scratching the surface!
Rockfield holds a special place in Welsh music history.
It’s the sort of recording studio where the walls almost seem to contain decades of extraordinary musical memories.
Legendary sessions.
Classic albums.
Creative breakthroughs.
And probably a few arguments over whose turn it was to make the tea!
For a 17-year-old Welsh musician, getting the opportunity to work in that environment must be an extraordinary experience.
Oscar has spoken enthusiastically about Rockfield’s atmosphere and the inspiration he draws from its history.
He has also expressed a desire to continue recording there.
And you can understand why.
Imagine walking into a studio knowing that some of the most influential musicians in rock history have worked in the same surroundings.
It’s enough to give you goosebumps.
Of course, recording in a legendary studio doesn’t automatically guarantee a hit record.
You still need the songs.
You still need the musicianship.
And you still need the determination to keep improving.
But having access to that sort of creative environment is certainly an exciting opportunity.
And we love seeing the next generation of Welsh artists making use of the incredible musical resources available right here in Cymru.
🐉 Wales Has A Proud History Of Producing Incredible Rock Bands!
Oscar’s ambition to become the next STEREOPHONICS comes from a country with an extraordinary history of producing rock musicians.
For such a relatively small nation, Wales has contributed an enormous amount to the wider rock and alternative music world.
Just think about some of the bands and artists we’ve produced.
🎸 STEREOPHONICS – Cwmaman
One of Wales’s biggest rock exports, with a career stretching across decades and countless major performances.
🤘 MANIC STREET PREACHERS – Blackwood
A band that combined alternative rock, political commentary, powerful songwriting and a fiercely independent Welsh identity.
🔥 BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE – Bridgend
One of the most internationally successful Welsh metal bands, helping introduce a new generation to melodic metalcore and heavy guitar music.
🎶 FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND – Bridgend
An influential post-hardcore and alternative rock band whose music resonated with fans across Britain and beyond.
🎸 FEEDER – Newport Connections
Led by Welsh musician Grant Nicholas, FEEDER became one of the most recognisable names in British alternative rock.
🔥 FLORENCE BLACK – Merthyr Tydfil
The hard-rocking trio have built an enthusiastic following through powerful live performances, impressive musicianship and a strong connection to their Welsh roots.
🤘 SKINDRED – Newport
The genre-smashing outfit led by Benji Webbe, combining heavy metal, reggae, punk and alternative influences into one unforgettable live experience.
And there are countless others.
From established international acts to grassroots bands playing small venues across Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Merthyr Tydfil and the Valleys, Wales continues to produce exciting musicians.
That’s the musical landscape Oscar Hartland is hoping to become part of.
And while comparisons with STEREOPHONICS will certainly attract attention, developing a sound of his own will ultimately be far more important than following somebody else’s blueprint.
Because the next great Welsh rock band shouldn’t have to sound exactly like the last one!
🎟️ Oscar Has Already Taken His Music On The Road!
One of the most encouraging things about Oscar’s musical ambitions is that he’s not simply talking about becoming a rock star.
He’s actually getting out there and performing.
The musician embarked on his first tour in 2025, gaining valuable live experience and beginning to develop his relationship with audiences outside the television world.
And on Saturday 31 October 2026, Oscar and his band were advertised to perform at Ebbw Vale RFC’s Welfare venue in Blaenau Gwent.
The Halloween event was another example of the young musician’s presence on the Welsh live circuit.
And that grassroots experience matters.
Because no matter how many millions of people have watched you on television, there’s something completely different about standing in front of a live audience with your own band.
You’ve got to hold their attention.
You’ve got to make the songs work.
And you’ve got to deliver a performance that makes people want to come back and see you again.
There’s no second take.
No television editing.
And no hiding behind the fact that your character was part of one of Britain’s most successful sitcoms.
It’s just you, your band and the audience.
That’s where musicians really develop.
And here at The Riff Report, we’ll always encourage young artists to keep supporting local venues, building their experience and getting their music in front of people.
Because the biggest bands in the world all had to start somewhere.
Even STEREOPHONICS spent years playing smaller venues before reaching the stadiums.
🎶 Is There A Place For Another Big Welsh Rock Band?
Absolutely bloody there is!
The music industry has changed enormously over the past few decades.
Streaming platforms have transformed how people discover new bands.
Social media allows independent artists to reach audiences without necessarily relying on major record labels.
And musicians can now record, release and promote their own material in ways that would have been considerably more difficult for previous generations.
But the competition is fierce.
Thousands of new songs appear on streaming services every day.
Getting people to listen is one challenge.
Getting them to remember your music is another.
And building a loyal audience that continues supporting you over several years?
That’s where the real work begins.
Oscar has the advantage of an existing public profile.
People recognise him.
They remember Gavin & Stacey.
And that recognition can encourage listeners to investigate his music.
But attention alone doesn’t guarantee a lasting musical career.
The songs need to connect.
The band needs to develop its live performances.
And the musicians need to find an identity that goes beyond Oscar’s television background.
If they manage that, there’s every reason to be interested in where the project might go.
Not because they’re guaranteed to become the next STEREOPHONICS.
Nobody can promise that.
But because young Welsh musicians making original rock music deserve the opportunity to be heard.
And that’s something we’re always happy to shout about.
🎤 Could Oscar Return To Acting?
Although music is becoming an increasingly important part of his life, Oscar hasn’t completely closed the door on his acting career.
During his recent interview, he acknowledged that he remains open to future acting opportunities.
And why not?
There are plenty of musicians who’ve successfully balanced acting and music.
The two worlds don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
But for now, his attention is clearly focused on developing his musical identity.
Interestingly, he has also expressed an interest in eventually recording a version of Run by Stephen Fretwell.
The song is famously associated with Gavin & Stacey, having served as the show’s theme music.
And considering Oscar’s personal connection to the series, a future interpretation could be a rather special moment.
Nothing has been formally announced, so for now it’s simply something he’d like to explore.
Still, imagine that for a second.
Neil the Baby covering the theme tune to the show that helped make him famous.
That’s the sort of musical full-circle moment that could bring a tear to Nessa’s eye.
Although she’d probably just look at him, shrug and say:
“Tidy.”
🔥 The Riff Report Verdict – From Neil The Baby To The Next Big Welsh Rock Hope?
There’s something genuinely encouraging about this story.
Oscar Hartland could probably have spent years enjoying the attention surrounding his Gavin & Stacey appearances.
He could have remained known primarily as Neil the Baby, making occasional television appearances and revisiting the character that introduced him to millions of people.
But instead, he’s pursuing something he’s passionate about.
Music.
And not just any music.
Welsh rock music.
He’s writing songs inspired by his own experiences.
He’s working with a band.
He’s performing live.
He’s recording at one of the most celebrated studios in British rock history.
And he’s got the ambition to dream about following in the footsteps of STEREOPHONICS.
Is that an enormous ambition?
Of course it is!
But you’ve got to start somewhere.
Kelly Jones didn’t wake up one morning already headlining stadiums.
The MANIC STREET PREACHERS didn’t emerge from Blackwood with a collection of number-one albums already under their belts.
And BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE weren’t born playing enormous international festivals.
They all started with songs, rehearsals, local performances and the belief that their music could reach people.
Oscar and his bandmates are still at an early stage of that journey.
And while their future success remains to be seen, their determination to create something connected to their Welsh roots is worth celebrating.
Here at The Riff Report, we don’t believe musicians should have to wait until they’re playing enormous stadiums before people start paying attention.
Supporting emerging talent is how you help build the next generation of Welsh music.
So, Oscar, keep writing.
Keep rehearsing.
Keep getting out there and playing live.
And keep flying the flag for Cymru.
Because if there’s one thing Wales knows how to produce, it’s a bloody good rock band!
From Barry Island to Rockfield Studios, the little lad from Gavin & Stacey has certainly come a long way.
Now let’s see where the music takes him.
Pob lwc, butt! Cymru am byth! 🐉🤘🔥
