15–18 August 1969 | Bethel, New York

There are music festivals… and then there’s Woodstock.

From 15 to 18 August 1969, hundreds of thousands of people descended upon a dairy farm in rural New York for an event that would become one of the most famous gatherings in the entire history of popular music.

It had legendary bands. It had rain. It had mud. It had traffic jams from hell. It had questionable organisation, food shortages, technical problems and considerably more people than anyone had planned for.

And somehow, against all the odds, it became legendary.

🌼 Three days of peace and music.

🎸 More than 30 acts.

✌️ A generation searching for something different.

🔥 And one absolutely unforgettable chapter in rock ’n’ roll history.

Welcome to Woodstock 1969, mun.

🌼 THREE DAYS THAT BECAME FOUR

Woodstock was officially billed as:

“An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music”

Except, naturally, things didn’t quite stick to the timetable.

Beginning on Friday, 15 August 1969, performances continued through the weekend and well into Monday, 18 August, when Jimi Hendrix finally brought proceedings to an unforgettable conclusion.

The festival took place on land belonging to dairy farmer Max Yasgur, near White Lake in the town of Bethel, New York.

The organisers had originally expected a much more manageable crowd.

What they got instead was a human tidal wave.

Estimates vary, but roughly 400,000 people are believed to have attended Woodstock.

Roads became completely overwhelmed.

Cars were abandoned.

People walked miles to reach the festival.

The fences effectively became irrelevant, and Woodstock transformed into a free event as enormous crowds continued arriving.

At that point, you can imagine the organisers looking across the field and thinking:

“Well… this has escalated.”

And it had.

Spectacularly.

🎤 FRIDAY, 15 AUGUST — WOODSTOCK BEGINS

The honour of opening Woodstock eventually fell to Richie Havens.

Havens wasn’t originally supposed to be the opening performer, but with artists struggling to reach the site because of the traffic chaos, he was sent onstage.

And he kept playing.

And playing.

His appearance became one of Woodstock’s defining early moments, particularly his improvised performance of “Freedom.”

The first day leaned heavily into the folk and acoustic side of the counterculture, with performers including Sweetwater, Tim Hardin, Ravi Shankar, Melanie, Arlo Guthrie and Joan Baez.

It was the relatively peaceful opening chapter before Woodstock turned the amplifiers up.

Because Saturday was coming.

And Saturday brought the riffs.

⚡ SATURDAY, 16 AUGUST — NOW WE’RE TALKING

By Saturday, Woodstock was becoming something far bigger than simply another music festival.

The enormous crowd stretched across the farmland.

Rain and mud became part of the experience.

Food and supplies were under immense pressure.

But onstage?

Some extraordinary music was happening.

Santana delivered one of the festival’s breakout performances.

At the time, the band weren’t yet the enormous international name they would become, but their explosive mixture of Latin percussion, blues and psychedelic rock was absolutely made for Woodstock.

Their performance of “Soul Sacrifice” — powered by the astonishing drumming of a teenage Michael Shrieve — became one of the festival’s most enduring pieces of footage.

Then came more heavyweights.

Canned Heat.

Mountain.

Grateful Dead.

Creedence Clearwater Revival.

And then, as Saturday night disappeared into Sunday morning, Woodstock went completely off the leash.

🔥 JANIS JOPLIN, SLY & THE FAMILY STONE AND THE WHO

Imagine standing in a muddy field in 1969 and getting this run of performers.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Janis Joplin, appearing with the Kozmic Blues Band, brought that unmistakable raw, blues-soaked voice to Woodstock.

Then came Sly and the Family Stone, whose late-night performance exploded with funk, soul, psychedelic rock and pure energy.

And after them?

THE WHO.

By the time Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle and Keith Moon were properly tearing into their set, it was the early hours of Sunday morning.

The band performed a substantial chunk of Tommy, turning Max Yasgur’s farm into one enormous rock theatre.

And because Woodstock wasn’t chaotic enough already, political activist Abbie Hoffman interrupted the performance.

Pete Townshend was not particularly impressed.

Let’s just say Hoffman’s unscheduled appearance didn’t last very long.

Rock ’n’ roll, mun. 😈

Then, as dawn arrived, The Who delivered “See Me, Feel Me” while sunlight began appearing across the festival site.

It’s one of those moments that almost feels too perfectly cinematic to be real.

🌅 JEFFERSON AIRPLANE AT BREAKFAST

Next came Jefferson Airplane.

Except the schedule was now so spectacularly delayed that their supposed Saturday-night headline appearance actually began on Sunday morning.

Grace Slick famously introduced their set as “morning maniac music.”

Fair description, really.

Imagine you’ve spent the entire night awake in a muddy field, survived The Who and Sly and the Family Stone, and then Jefferson Airplane arrive with “Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit.”

Sleep?

Never heard of it.

🌧️ SUNDAY, 17 AUGUST — THE WEATHER JOINS THE BILL

Sunday brought another colossal collection of performers.

Among them were Joe Cocker, Country Joe and the Fish, Ten Years After, The Band, Johnny Winter, Blood, Sweat & Tears and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Joe Cocker’s extraordinary interpretation of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends” became another defining Woodstock performance.

Then the weather decided it wanted a headline slot.

Rain hammered the festival.

The field became increasingly muddy.

People covered themselves with whatever they could find.

Blankets, plastic sheets and sleeping bags became festival survival equipment.

Anyone who’s survived a British festival probably feels an immediate spiritual connection here.

Mud?

Rain?

Completely inadequate clothing?

Standard festival behaviour, butt. 😂🌧️

Yet the crowd remained.

🎸 CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG FACE THE CROWD

Another historically significant appearance came from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

The group were still incredibly new as a live unit.

Standing in front of one of the largest audiences imaginable wasn’t exactly the gentle warm-up gig most bands would choose.

Stephen Stills famously told the audience:

“This is the second time we’ve ever played in front of people, man. We’re scared shitless.”

Understandable.

No pressure, lads.

Just several hundred thousand people watching.

Their Woodstock appearance helped cement them as one of the defining groups of their generation.

🎸 MONDAY, 18 AUGUST — JIMI HENDRIX CLOSES WOODSTOCK

By Monday morning, much of the enormous Woodstock crowd had already departed.

Those who remained, however, witnessed history.

Jimi Hendrix took the stage with his expanded ensemble, Gypsy Sun and Rainbows, and closed Woodstock.

His performance would become forever associated with the festival.

And one moment in particular entered music history.

🇺🇸 “THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER”

Hendrix transformed the American national anthem through distortion, feedback and screaming guitar effects.

It was beautiful.

It was unsettling.

It was confrontational.

It sounded like celebration and destruction happening simultaneously.

For many listeners, Hendrix’s interpretation appeared to evoke the sound of bombs, sirens and warfare at a time when the Vietnam War remained an enormous source of political and social division.

Whether heard as protest, commentary, artistic experimentation or some mixture of all three, it became one of the most analysed guitar performances ever captured.

Hendrix then continued before eventually bringing Woodstock to its conclusion.

The fields were battered.

The crowds had thinned.

The ground was covered in the aftermath of four extraordinary days.

But Woodstock had become immortal.

🌼 MORE THAN JUST A FESTIVAL

It’s easy to romanticise Woodstock.

The photographs make it look almost mythical.

Long hair.

Tie-dye.

Peace signs.

People dancing barefoot.

Guitars under the summer sky.

But the reality was considerably messier.

There were huge logistical problems.

Food became difficult to obtain.

Medical teams faced enormous pressure.

Sanitation was stretched.

The traffic situation was catastrophic.

Weather conditions deteriorated.

The organisers lost control of ticketing.

Yet amid that chaos, hundreds of thousands of people largely managed to coexist peacefully.

That became a huge part of the Woodstock story.

The event was held during an America experiencing enormous cultural upheaval — the Vietnam War, civil rights struggles, generational conflict and a rapidly changing youth culture all formed the backdrop.

Woodstock became a symbol of that generation.

Not necessarily because everything went perfectly.

Almost nothing did.

But because somehow the whole gigantic, muddy experiment kept going.

🤘 THE LINE-UP THAT BECAME LEGEND

The artists who performed across Woodstock included:

Richie Havens • Sweetwater • Bert Sommer • Tim Hardin • Ravi Shankar • Melanie • Arlo Guthrie • Joan Baez • Quill • Country Joe McDonald • Santana • John Sebastian • Keef Hartley Band • The Incredible String Band • Canned Heat • Mountain • Grateful Dead • Creedence Clearwater Revival • Janis Joplin • Sly and the Family Stone • The Who • Jefferson Airplane • Joe Cocker • Country Joe and the Fish • Ten Years After • The Band • Johnny Winter • Blood, Sweat & Tears • Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young • Paul Butterfield Blues Band • Sha Na Na • Jimi Hendrix

Read that again.

What a bloody line-up. 🤯

Some were already stars.

Some became bigger because of Woodstock.

And others delivered performances that would forever be connected to those four days in August 1969.

🎬 WOODSTOCK BECOMES IMMORTAL

Part of the reason Woodstock became so deeply embedded in popular culture was that it was captured.

The Woodstock documentary film, released in 1970, introduced millions of people who weren’t there to the sights, sounds and madness of the festival.

The accompanying recordings helped do the same.

Suddenly Woodstock wasn’t simply something experienced by the people standing on Max Yasgur’s farm.

It could be watched.

It could be heard.

It could be revisited.

And generations who weren’t even born in 1969 could discover it.

🌼 57 YEARS LATER — WOODSTOCK STILL MATTERS

From 15–18 August 1969, a patch of farmland in New York became the centre of the musical universe.

Nobody could truly recreate it.

Many have tried.

Woodstock itself returned in different forms over the decades, including the infamous Woodstock ’99, but the original occupies a completely different place in music history.

It was a combination of the right artists, the right cultural moment, an unbelievable crowd and enough organisational chaos to give every modern festival promoter nightmares for the next century.

😂

Yet through all of it came performances that still give music fans goosebumps.

Santana tearing through “Soul Sacrifice.”

Joe Cocker reinventing “With a Little Help from My Friends.”

The Who greeting the sunrise.

Sly and the Family Stone turning the night into a party.

Janis Joplin pouring everything into the microphone.

And finally…

Jimi Hendrix standing onstage on Monday morning, Stratocaster in hand, making his guitar sound like an entire country wrestling with itself.

That is Woodstock.

Messy.

Idealistic.

Chaotic.

Historic.

And completely impossible to forget.

🌼 THREE DAYS OF PEACE & MUSIC.

Except it became four.

Because apparently even in 1969, festival set times were more of a suggestion. 😂🤘

Happy anniversary to Woodstock — 15, 16, 17 & 18 August 1969.

One farm.

Hundreds of thousands of people.

A mountain of mud.

And enough legendary music to change rock history forever.

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. 🤘🏴🔥

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
