🎸😈 Get those guitars tuned, crank up the amplifiers and prepare for another battle at the crossroads, butt! Guitar virtuoso STEVE VAI has revealed that he’s ready to reprise his legendary role as devilish guitarist JACK BUTLER in a proposed sequel to the 1986 cult classic Crossroads!

Forty years after RALPH MACCHIO’s Eugene ‘Lightning Boy’ Martone defeated Butler in one of cinema’s most unforgettable guitar duels, original screenwriter JOHN FUSCO has confirmed that discussions about a sequel are gathering momentum. And with Macchio interested in revisiting the story, Vai has already made his intentions clear: Jack Butler wants revenge!

Well, bloody hell, Riff Report crew!

Somebody get the guitars out.

Warm up those fingers.

And perhaps give the Devil a quick phone call.

Because one of the most legendary guitar battles in movie history could be heading back to the big screen!

Yes, you heard that correctly.

CROSSROADS COULD BE GETTING A SEQUEL!

And before anybody starts wondering whether we’re talking about the 2002 Britney Spears film, absolutely bloody not, mun!

We’re talking about the proper 1986 blues-rock classic.

The one starring Ralph Macchio.

The one featuring extraordinary guitar performances.

The one exploring the legendary story of blues musician Robert Johnson.

And, most importantly, the film featuring one of the greatest guitar showdowns ever committed to celluloid.

RALPH MACCHIO VERSUS STEVE VAI!

Blues against heavy metal.

Classical technique against shredding.

Good against evil.

And enough notes flying around to give your average guitar teacher a nervous breakdown!

Now, four decades after the original film’s release, the creative team behind Crossroads have revealed that they’re seriously considering returning to that extraordinary musical world.

In a new interview with Guitar World, published on 3 November 2026, screenwriter John Fusco confirmed that he and Ralph Macchio have developed an idea for a follow-up.

And Steve Vai?

Well, he’s certainly not objecting.

In fact, he sounds rather enthusiastic about settling an old score.

Jack Butler has apparently spent 40 years waiting for another crack at Lightning Boy!

Although, before we get carried away, there’s an important detail.

The sequel is still in the planning and discussion stage. No studio green light, filming schedule or release date has been announced.

But the fact that the original writer, leading actor and legendary guitarist are all discussing the possibility is exciting news.

And for fans of guitar-driven cinema, it could represent the return of a genuine cult favourite.

🎬 John Fusco Confirms Plans For A Crossroads Sequel!

The biggest development comes from screenwriter John Fusco, who wrote the original 1986 film.

Fusco has maintained contact with Ralph Macchio over the years, and the pair have apparently discussed the possibility of revisiting Crossroads on numerous occasions.

But with the film celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2026, those discussions have taken on renewed significance.

During his conversation with Guitar World, Fusco explained that Macchio had suggested doing something to mark the anniversary.

The writer responded with a considerably more ambitious idea.

Why not make a sequel?

And rather than dismissing the suggestion, Macchio was interested.

According to Fusco, the conversation developed into a discussion about what a modern continuation of the story might involve.

He confirmed:

“We’ve got a plan.”

Now then, butt.

That’s certainly enough to make guitar fans sit up and pay attention!

Fusco hasn’t revealed the complete storyline.

Nor has he confirmed which characters would appear or how the original film’s events would influence the sequel.

However, he has suggested that the new project would appeal to both music enthusiasts and dedicated blues fans.

And that’s an important point.

Because while Crossroads is often remembered for its spectacular final guitar duel, the original film was about considerably more than flashy solos.

It explored the history of the blues.

The mythology surrounding Robert Johnson.

The relationship between different generations of musicians.

And the question of what somebody might sacrifice to become a great artist.

A sequel that manages to revisit those themes while exploring contemporary music could be particularly interesting.

But for now, the details remain closely guarded.

😈 Steve Vai Wants Revenge As Jack Butler!

Now here’s the part that’ll have guitar enthusiasts absolutely grinning.

Steve Vai is interested in returning as Jack Butler!

For those unfamiliar with the original film, Butler is the intimidating guitarist who appears during its climactic musical showdown.

He’s an extraordinary musician.

A terrifying opponent.

And a character whose talent is associated with the supernatural forces surrounding the crossroads legend.

Played by Vai, Butler became one of the most memorable guitar-playing villains in cinema.

The character barely needs to speak.

His guitar does most of the talking.

And when you’ve got Steve Vai doing the playing, that’s more than enough!

But there’s one rather important problem.

Jack Butler lost the original duel.

And apparently, he’s still not happy about it.

Speaking about the possibility of returning, Vai joked:

“Jack Butler needs his revenge!”

Now THAT is exactly the sort of enthusiasm we want to hear!

Imagine it.

Forty years later.

Jack Butler returns.

The red Jackson guitar is back.

The amplifiers are humming.

And somewhere in the background, somebody is preparing to sign a very questionable contract involving their immortal soul.

It’s gloriously ridiculous.

And we absolutely bloody love it!

Of course, Vai’s comments confirm his willingness to participate.

They don’t mean he’s already signed a contract or that the sequel has entered production.

But having him interested in returning as Butler is a major reason this potential follow-up has attracted attention.

Because let’s be honest.

You can’t bring back Crossroads without at least considering another guitar showdown!

🎸 Ralph Macchio Could Return As Eugene ‘Lightning Boy’ Martone!

The other major name involved is Ralph Macchio.

And yes, it’s the same Ralph Macchio who became internationally famous as Daniel LaRusso in The Karate Kid.

But while millions of people know him for martial arts, guitar enthusiasts remember him for another very different role.

Eugene ‘Lightning Boy’ Martone.

In the original Crossroads, Macchio played a talented young classical guitarist fascinated by the blues.

Despite his formal musical education, Eugene believed there was something missing from his understanding of music.

He wanted to discover the emotional authenticity associated with the great blues musicians.

And that obsession eventually led him on a journey through the American South.

🎤 What Has Ralph Macchio Said About A Sequel?

Macchio has suggested that a new film would take place many years after the original story.

However, rather than simply focusing on an older Eugene Martone, the sequel could explore the experiences of somebody more relevant to the modern musical world.

That’s a particularly interesting possibility.

Because it suggests the creative team aren’t simply planning to remake the original film with the same characters doing exactly the same things.

Instead, they may introduce a new generation of musicians.

Perhaps somebody struggling to discover their own musical identity.

A young guitarist trying to find the roots of the music they love.

Or somebody facing a completely different set of challenges in the modern industry.

Those are possibilities, not confirmed plot details.

But there’s enormous potential in the concept.

And Macchio has made it clear that he hasn’t abandoned the idea.

🥋 From The Karate Kid To Crossroads

Interestingly, Macchio has already demonstrated how successfully a beloved 1980s character can return decades later.

His work on Cobra Kai brought Daniel LaRusso back to television, introducing the Karate Kid story to a new generation.

But a Crossroads sequel would offer a very different opportunity.

Rather than returning to the world of martial arts, Macchio could revisit a character whose journey was shaped by music, identity and the search for artistic meaning.

And with the right story, Eugene Martone’s experiences could provide a connection between the original film and a completely new generation of guitarists.

Although we’d definitely expect somebody to ask whether he’s kept practising that final solo!

🎬 Crossroads (1986) – The Cult Movie That Changed Guitar Cinema!

Right then.

For younger readers who haven’t experienced the original film, here’s a little history lesson.

Crossroads was released in American cinemas on 14 March 1986.

Directed by Walter Hill and written by John Fusco, it featured an impressive cast including:

  • Ralph Macchio as Eugene Martone.
  • Joe Seneca as Willie Brown.
  • Jami Gertz as Frances.
  • Steve Vai as Jack Butler.
  • Robert Judd as Scratch.

The film followed Eugene, a young classical guitarist studying at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York.

Despite his formal training, Eugene becomes fascinated by the life and music of legendary Delta blues musician Robert Johnson.

In particular, he’s obsessed with the possibility that Johnson recorded a mysterious lost song.

Determined to uncover the truth, Eugene seeks out an ageing bluesman named Willie Brown.

Brown has a complicated history connected to Johnson and the supernatural folklore surrounding the Mississippi crossroads.

The two eventually travel south, embarking on a journey filled with music, friendship, conflict and uncomfortable truths.

And as their adventure unfolds, Eugene discovers that understanding the blues involves considerably more than simply playing the correct notes.

It’s about history.

Experience.

Emotion.

And the lives of the musicians who created the music.

The film combines those themes with elements of supernatural fantasy.

And that combination eventually leads to one of cinema’s most memorable musical confrontations.

The guitar duel.

🔥 THE GUITAR DUEL – One Of Cinema’s Greatest Rock Moments!

If you’ve ever watched Crossroads, you’ll know exactly which scene we’re talking about.

The lights are dark.

The atmosphere is tense.

A crowd gathers around a stage.

And Eugene discovers that the only way to save Willie Brown’s soul is to defeat the Devil’s guitarist.

Enter Jack Butler.

And what a magnificent villain he is!

Long hair.

Dark clothing.

A terrifying stare.

And a bright red Jackson guitar that looks ready to unleash absolute chaos.

Butler is played by Steve Vai, one of the most technically accomplished guitarists of his generation.

And rather than simply pretending to play, Vai brought genuine musical virtuosity to the performance.

🎸 Blues Versus Shredding!

The confrontation begins with blues-influenced guitar phrases.

The two musicians exchange musical ideas.

The intensity grows.

The playing becomes more aggressive.

And the duel develops into an extraordinary display of guitar technique.

Vai’s character unleashes blistering solos.

Fast runs.

Dramatic bends.

And passages that seem almost impossible to perform.

But Eugene refuses to surrender.

Eventually, the young guitarist turns to his classical training.

He performs a demanding passage based on the music of Niccolò Paganini, whose own legendary virtuosity was surrounded by supernatural folklore.

And Butler is defeated.

It’s a gloriously theatrical conclusion.

A mixture of blues, classical music and 1980s guitar heroics.

And while the scene might be a little outrageous, it has become legendary among musicians.

Even today, clips of that duel continue circulating online.

Guitarists analyse the technique.

Fans debate the playing.

And younger musicians discover Steve Vai’s extraordinary abilities through the film.

Forty years later, it’s still enough to make your fingers hurt just watching it, butt!

🤯 Did Ralph Macchio Really Play Guitar In Crossroads?

Now here’s a question that has been asked for decades.

Was Ralph Macchio actually playing those incredible guitar solos?

The answer requires a little explanation.

Macchio underwent substantial guitar training for the film.

He worked extensively with renowned musician Arlen Roth, who helped him learn techniques and develop convincing playing movements.

The actor spent months preparing to portray Eugene Martone.

And that training made the performance considerably more believable.

However, the guitar audio heard during the film was created by professional musicians.

Macchio wasn’t personally recording every extraordinary passage audiences heard.

And the climactic duel involved contributions from several exceptional guitarists.

🎸 The Musicians Behind The Music

Steve Vai

Vai portrayed Jack Butler and contributed extraordinary electric guitar playing to the duel.

Ry Cooder

The acclaimed guitarist served as the film’s musical director and played an important role in developing its blues soundtrack.

Arlen Roth

Roth coached Macchio and performed substantial guitar material associated with Eugene’s character.

William Kanengiser

The classical guitarist contributed to the film’s classical playing and musical preparation.

Together, these musicians helped create the extraordinary musical sequences that made Crossroads memorable.

And there’s something particularly fascinating about the collaboration.

While the film presents two characters battling through their guitars, the actual music reflects the work of several accomplished performers.

It’s a reminder of just how much preparation goes into making a musical performance convincing on screen.

🎼 Eugene’s Trick Bag – The Guitar Solo That Inspired Generations!

Now then, guitar enthusiasts.

We couldn’t possibly discuss Crossroads without mentioning Eugene’s Trick Bag.

The piece associated with the climax of the final duel has become legendary among guitarists.

Drawing heavily on Paganini’s Caprice No. 5, it combines classical virtuosity with modern electric guitar technique.

And it’s ridiculously demanding.

Rapid alternate picking.

Complex finger movements.

String skipping.

Precise timing.

And the sort of technical challenges that can keep dedicated guitarists practising for months.

Steve Vai’s contribution to the piece became an important part of his wider reputation.

And for many younger musicians, discovering Crossroads was their introduction to his extraordinary musical abilities.

The track subsequently appeared on Vai’s 2002 collection The Elusive Light And Sound Vol. 1.

It’s an important part of guitar culture.

And if a sequel eventually arrives, fans will undoubtedly be wondering whether the creative team can produce another musical confrontation capable of matching that legacy.

Because let’s be honest.

You can’t simply throw a couple of power chords at Jack Butler and expect him to be impressed!

🎸 Arlen Roth Reveals The Original Guitar Duel Was Very Different!

Here’s a fascinating piece of filmmaking history.

The famous Steve Vai showdown wasn’t originally planned in quite the form audiences eventually saw.

According to guitarist and musical consultant Arlen Roth, the film initially had a more traditional blues-oriented ending.

Roth has explained that he and Ry Cooder had recorded material for a slide-guitar confrontation.

The intention was to remain closely connected to the film’s central blues themes.

However, the filmmakers ultimately moved towards the more theatrical guitar showdown involving Vai.

And Roth wasn’t entirely happy about that decision.

He believed introducing a flashy heavy metal-style guitarist risked moving the film away from its blues foundations.

From his perspective, the original concept would have been more musically authentic.

But here’s the interesting twist.

Despite his creative reservations, Roth developed a strong friendship with Vai during filming.

And the finished scene became one of the movie’s most celebrated elements.

It’s a fascinating example of how filmmaking decisions can change a project’s legacy.

What one musician viewed as an unnecessary departure from the original blues concept became the very moment that helped establish the film as a cult favourite among rock guitarists.

Would the original slide-guitar duel have been brilliant?

Quite possibly.

Would it have developed the same following as Steve Vai’s spectacular appearance?

We’ll never know.

But the story shows how Crossroads brought together different musical philosophies.

Traditional blues authenticity on one side.

Virtuoso rock guitar spectacle on the other.

And perhaps that tension helped make the final film so memorable.

😈 The Robert Johnson Legend – Did A Bluesman Really Sell His Soul To The Devil?

Now here’s where Crossroads enters the darker side of music history.

The film draws inspiration from the extraordinary mythology surrounding Robert Johnson.

Johnson was an influential American Delta blues musician who recorded during the 1930s.

His songs included:

  • Cross Road Blues
  • Hellhound On My Trail
  • Love In Vain
  • Sweet Home Chicago
  • I Believe I’ll Dust My Broom

Despite recording a relatively small catalogue, Johnson became one of the most influential figures in blues history.

His guitar playing and songwriting helped shape the development of rock music.

Musicians including Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and countless others have acknowledged the importance of his recordings.

But Johnson also became associated with one of music’s most enduring legends.

🌑 The Deal At The Crossroads

According to folklore, Johnson supposedly travelled to a deserted crossroads at midnight.

There, he encountered a supernatural figure who offered him extraordinary musical ability in exchange for his soul.

It’s a wonderfully sinister story.

And one that has become deeply embedded in blues and rock mythology.

But here’s the important thing.

There is no credible historical evidence that Robert Johnson actually made a supernatural bargain.

The story belongs to folklore rather than established biography.

And similar tales have been associated with other blues musicians.

Nevertheless, it provides an extraordinary foundation for fiction.

A young musician.

An irresistible desire for greatness.

A mysterious bargain.

And a terrifying price.

It’s easy to understand why John Fusco found the legend so compelling.

And with a proposed sequel now being discussed, there’s an opportunity to explore how those themes might connect with modern musical culture.

🎸 Could A Crossroads Sequel Explore Modern Guitar Culture?

This is where things get particularly interesting.

Because the world of guitar music has changed enormously since 1986.

Back then, the guitar hero era was in full swing.

Musicians such as Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen and countless others were pushing electric guitar technique to extraordinary levels.

Speed.

Precision.

Technical complexity.

And theatrical performances were major parts of the musical landscape.

But the modern world is very different.

Today, guitarists can build international audiences through YouTube, TikTok and other digital platforms.

Independent musicians can record professional-quality material in home studios.

And younger performers are combining rock, metal, jazz, electronic music and countless other influences.

🤘 What If The Devil Discovered Social Media?

Now, we’re not suggesting this is the actual storyline.

But imagine a modern Crossroads exploring the pressures facing today’s musicians.

A young guitarist obsessed with becoming famous.

Social media comparisons.

Online criticism.

Streaming algorithms.

And the temptation to sacrifice artistic integrity for commercial success.

That’s a pretty interesting modern interpretation of the crossroads legend.

Because the idea of selling your soul for fame doesn’t necessarily have to involve a supernatural contract.

It can also be understood as a metaphor.

What are musicians prepared to sacrifice for success?

Their independence?

Their creativity?

Their relationships?

Or the very reasons they started making music?

Those questions remain relevant.

And a sequel that connects them to the original film’s themes could potentially offer something more meaningful than a straightforward nostalgic rematch.

Of course, the actual story remains unannounced.

But with Fusco suggesting that blues enthusiasts would appreciate the concept, there’s reason to hope that the music’s history will remain important.

🎬 Could Crossroads Follow The Success Of Cobra Kai?

There’s another reason the sequel idea is attracting attention.

Ralph Macchio has already enjoyed considerable success revisiting one of his most famous 1980s roles.

Through Cobra Kai, the actor helped introduce the Karate Kid universe to a new generation.

The series brought back familiar characters while exploring the consequences of their past actions.

And importantly, it didn’t simply recreate the original films.

It expanded the story.

Introduced younger characters.

And explored how people’s lives had changed over several decades.

That approach could offer an interesting creative model for Crossroads.

An older Eugene Martone might have a completely different understanding of music.

Perhaps he’s become a teacher.

Maybe he’s spent decades performing.

Or perhaps his relationship with the blues has changed.

Again, none of those possibilities has been confirmed.

But the general concept of exploring an older character alongside a younger generation is certainly intriguing.

And the idea of Steve Vai returning as Jack Butler adds another wonderfully theatrical dimension.

Because while Eugene might have grown wiser…

Something tells us Jack Butler probably hasn’t forgotten losing that guitar battle!

🎸 Steve Vai – The Guitar Genius Behind The Devil’s Favourite Shredder!

For younger readers who might not be familiar with Steve Vai’s extraordinary career, here’s a little reminder.

Born in New York in 1960, Vai developed into one of the most technically accomplished electric guitarists of his generation.

He studied music and was mentored by legendary guitarist Joe Satriani.

His early professional career included working with the extraordinary Frank Zappa, whose demanding compositions provided an enormous musical challenge.

Vai subsequently performed with major artists including David Lee Roth and Whitesnake.

But his solo career has been equally important.

Albums including Passion And Warfare, Sex & Religion and Alien Love Secrets helped establish him as one of the defining instrumental rock guitarists of his era.

His playing combines technical virtuosity with unusual melodic ideas, inventive effects and a distinctive sense of musical theatre.

And that creativity made him a natural choice for Jack Butler.

The character needed to be intimidating.

Brilliant.

Unpredictable.

And capable of making an audience believe he possessed almost supernatural musical talent.

Steve Vai delivered exactly that.

And four decades later, he’s still remembered for the performance.

That’s quite an achievement for a film role that occupied only a relatively small part of the movie.

🐉 A Message From Wales – Never Underestimate A Proper Guitar Duel!

Now then, butt.

Here in Wales, we know a thing or two about guitar-driven rock music.

From the mighty BUDGIE to MANIC STREET PREACHERS, STEREOPHONICS, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE and countless grassroots musicians across Cymru, we’ve produced plenty of guitarists capable of making an enormous racket.

And there’s something wonderfully entertaining about the idea of two musicians going head-to-head through their instruments.

No arguments.

No shouting.

Just guitars.

Technique.

Expression.

And the occasional absolutely ridiculous solo!

Imagine a modern guitar duel taking place in a little rock club in Cardiff.

One guitarist unleashes a blistering shred solo.

The other responds with a soulful blues phrase.

Somebody in the audience starts shouting encouragement.

And before long, the entire venue is losing its mind.

That’s the sort of entertainment we’d happily pay twenty quid to witness, mun!

But here’s something important.

The best guitar playing isn’t always about speed.

Sometimes one carefully chosen note can communicate more emotion than a hundred played at lightning speed.

And that’s part of what made the original Crossroads so interesting.

It explored the relationship between technique and feeling.

Musical education and personal experience.

The desire to impress and the desire to communicate something meaningful.

Those are questions musicians continue exploring today.

And if a sequel can capture even a fraction of that musical spirit, it could become something worth celebrating.

At this point, there is no official confirmation that cameras are preparing to roll.

But having the original writer, principal actor and legendary guitarist all discussing a follow-up is an encouraging development.

And for fans who’ve waited decades to see Jack Butler return, it’s certainly the most interesting news surrounding the film in some time.

🔥 The Riff Report Verdict – The Devil Wants A Rematch, Butt!

Well then, Riff Report crew.

What a bloody brilliant idea this could turn out to be!

Forty years after the original Crossroads introduced audiences to one of cinema’s greatest guitar duels, the possibility of a sequel is finally being discussed seriously.

And with Ralph Macchio, John Fusco and Steve Vai all expressing interest, there’s certainly reason for excitement.

But what makes this particularly interesting isn’t simply the opportunity to revisit a famous scene.

It’s the possibility of exploring the relationship between blues history and modern guitar culture.

The original film was about more than technical virtuosity.

It explored the emotional roots of music.

The people who helped create the blues.

And the difference between learning notes and understanding what those notes mean.

That gives a potential sequel plenty of interesting territory to explore.

Of course, we’d absolutely love another spectacular guitar duel.

Preferably involving Steve Vai.

A ridiculous number of guitar amplifiers.

And somebody attempting a solo so technically demanding that guitarists watching at home immediately start questioning their life choices!

But we’d also love to see the film maintain its respect for the blues musicians whose extraordinary work helped inspire generations of rock performers.

Because without those musical foundations, heavy metal and rock guitar would sound very different today.

And that’s something worth remembering.

As for Jack Butler?

Well, he lost the original duel.

And now Steve Vai wants revenge.

Forty years of unfinished business.

One legendary red Jackson guitar.

And the possibility of another unforgettable battle.

That’s a recipe for some seriously entertaining rock cinema!

But until a studio formally approves the project, we’ll be keeping our expectations sensible.

The idea is exciting.

The musicians are interested.

The writer has a plan.

Now somebody needs to turn that plan into an actual film.

And if they do?

We’ll be there with the popcorn, the devil horns and the volume turned up to eleven!

Because sometimes the best rock ‘n’ roll stories deserve another chapter.

Jack Butler isn’t finished yet, butt. And the crossroads might be calling once again! 😈🎸🔥

💬 Have Your Say, Riff Report Crew!

Right then, you wonderful bunch of guitar-loving rockers!

Would YOU love to see a sequel to the 1986 movie Crossroads?

Should Ralph Macchio return as Eugene Martone?

Would you love to see Steve Vai reprise his legendary role as Jack Butler?

And most importantly…

WHO SHOULD FACE STEVE VAI IN THE NEXT GUITAR DUEL?

Joe Satriani?

John Petrucci?

Yngwie Malmsteen?

Nita Strauss?

Tim Henson?

Or perhaps an exciting young guitarist nobody’s heard of yet?

And here’s another question.

Is the original Crossroads guitar duel still the greatest guitar battle ever captured on film?

Or is there another movie performance that deserves the crown?

Get involved in the comments and tell us what you think!

We’d also love to hear whether the original film inspired you to pick up a guitar.

Because sometimes all it takes is one unforgettable musical moment to change somebody’s life.

Keep the blues alive, the guitars screaming and the devil away from your record collection, butt!

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
