16 August 1986. Donington Park. Around 70,000 rock fans. Six bands. One absolutely monstrous day of heavy music.
Today marks the 40th anniversary of Monsters of Rock 1986, a festival that still reads like somebody raided a metalheadโs record collection and decided to book the entire thing in one go.
The running order?
Bad News.
Warlock.
Motรถrhead.
Def Leppard.
Scorpions.
And headlining the whole glorious racketโฆ
Ozzy Osbourne.
Cโmon, butt. ๐คฏ๐ค
Forty years later, that lineup still looks outrageous.
This was the seventh annual Monsters of Rock festival at Castle Donington, and by this point Donington had already become sacred ground for hard rock and heavy metal fans.
But 1986 had something special about it.
It was a day that captured several generations of heavy music at once: comedy metal chaos, European metal firepower, Motรถrhead at full volume, Def Leppard on the brink of becoming global superstars, Scorpions at the top of their game and Ozzy Osbourne ruling the night as only Ozzy could.
๐ฐ DONINGTON HAD BECOME THE PLACE TO BE
Monsters of Rock had first arrived at Donington Park in 1980 and quickly became one of the most important heavy rock festivals in Europe.
By the middle of the decade, the very word Donington had taken on a life of its own.
You didnโt need to say much more.
If you were into rock and metal, you knew.
Donington meant gigantic stages, enormous crowds, denim jackets, leather, mud, beer, riffs and amplifiers loud enough to interfere with nearby weather systems.
And on Saturday 16 August 1986, somewhere in the region of 70,000 fans packed into Donington Park for another day of glorious musical punishment.
๐ BAD NEWS OPEN THE MADNESS
First up were Bad News, the fictional comedy rock band from The Comic Strip Presentsโฆ
Featuring Adrian Edmondson, Rik Mayall, Nigel Planer and Peter Richardson, Bad News were basically a full-blown parody of heavy metal excess.
Putting them on the Monsters of Rock stage in front of tens of thousands of genuine rock and metal fans was either inspired booking or total lunacy.
Probably both.
They provided the ridiculous opening chapter before the festival moved very quickly into considerably heavier territory.
โ๏ธ WARLOCK AND THE RISE OF DORO PESCH
Next came Warlock, fronted by the unmistakable Doro Pesch.
Doro would go on to become one of the most respected and enduring figures in heavy metal, but even in 1986 she was already showing why she belonged on massive festival stages.
Warlock brought proper German heavy metal muscle to Donington, giving the crowd an early dose of riffs, power and attitude.
On a bill dominated by male performers, Doro stood out and absolutely held her own.
Four decades later, she remains one of metalโs most beloved figures.

โ ๏ธ THEN CAME MOTรRHEAD
At some point, somebody presumably decided the crowdโs hearing was still functioning far too well.
Enter Motรถrhead.
Lemmy and company were already one of Britainโs most iconic heavy bands by 1986.
They had Overkill.
They had Bomber.
They had Ace of Spades.
They had that unmistakable wall of noise.
And when Motรถrhead took a festival stage, subtlety was never really part of the arrangement.
Lemmy always described Motรถrhead as a rock โnโ roll band rather than a metal band, but genre debates probably became irrelevant once those amplifiers kicked in.
It was loud.
It was dirty.
It was fast.
It was Motรถrhead.
Exactly what Donington needed.
๐ฅ DEF LEPPARD โ JUST BEFORE EVERYTHING WENT MASSIVE
Then came Def Leppard, and this is where the 1986 festival becomes particularly fascinating from a rock-history perspective.
The Sheffield band were already huge thanks to Pyromania, but they had not yet released the album that would send them into a completely different stratosphere.
Hysteria wouldnโt arrive until 1987.
That means Donington 1986 caught Def Leppard right on the edge of global domination.
The band had also endured one of the most difficult periods imaginable after drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a car crash on New Yearโs Eve 1984.
His return behind the kit became one of the most remarkable comeback stories in rock history.
And there he was at Donington, helping power one of Britainโs biggest bands through another massive festival performance.
Within the following couple of years, Def Leppard would give the world songs including:
- โPour Some Sugar on Meโ
- โAnimalโ
- โHysteriaโ
- โLove Bitesโ
- โArmageddon Itโ
They were already stars.
They were about to become enormous.
๐ฆ SCORPIONS BRING THE WORLD-CLASS HARD ROCK
As if the day hadnโt already been stacked enough, Scorpions were next.
By 1986, the German rock giants already had an extraordinary catalogue behind them.
โRock You Like a Hurricane.โ
โStill Loving You.โ
โBig City Nights.โ
โNo One Like You.โ
They were built for massive stages.
Klaus Meineโs voice.
Rudolf Schenkerโs guitar work.
Huge choruses.
Huge hooks.
Huge everything.
This was several years before โWind of Changeโ would become a worldwide smash, yet Scorpions were already operating at a level most bands could only dream of.
Donington was exactly the sort of place where they belonged.
๐ฆ THEN THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS TOOK OVER
Finally, the sun dropped and the stage belonged to Ozzy Osbourne.
The former Black Sabbath frontman was already deep into a hugely successful solo career.
He had released Blizzard of Ozz.
Then Diary of a Madman.
Then Bark at the Moon.
And earlier in 1986 came The Ultimate Sin.
By the time Ozzy arrived at Donington, the Prince of Darkness was fully established as one of heavy metalโs biggest solo stars.
This was classic mid-โ80s Ozzy.
Huge production.
Wild costumes.
Big hair.
Bigger personality.
And alongside him was guitarist Jake E. Lee, whose playing was a major part of Ozzyโs sound during this era.
For many fans in attendance, Ozzyโs headline performance would have been the perfect ending to an already ridiculous day.
And looking back now, there is something beautifully fitting about Ozzy closing one of Britainโs biggest heavy festivals.
Black Sabbath helped lay the foundations for heavy metal.
Now one of that bandโs founding members was headlining one of the genreโs most important festivals.

๐ธ JUST LOOK AT THAT RUNNING ORDER
Forty years later, the lineup still looks bonkers:

Thatโs not a festival poster.
Thatโs a greatest-hits compilation with a catering tent.

And what makes it even better is where several of those artists were in their careers.
Def Leppard were one year away from Hysteria.
Doro was still helping establish herself on the international stage.
Scorpions were already global heavyweights.
Motรถrhead were Motรถrhead.
And Ozzy was enjoying one of the biggest periods of his solo career.
๐๏ธ THE LEGACY OF MONSTERS OF ROCK
Monsters of Rock would continue to build Doningtonโs reputation throughout the late โ80s and early โ90s.
The festival became part of British rock culture.
For generations of fans, travelling to Donington became something close to a pilgrimage.
Bands wanted to play there.
Fans wanted to say they had been there.
And the mythology kept growing.
Years later, Donington Park would once again become the centre of the British rock universe through Download Festival, carrying that same basic spirit into a new generation.
Different festival.
Different era.
Same sacred ground.
Whenever thousands of metalheads pour into Donington today, they are walking across decades of rock history.
๐ฏ๏ธ FOUR DECADES LATER
Forty years is a long time.
Some of the giants from that 1986 bill are sadly no longer with us.
Lemmy Kilmister died in 2015.
Ozzy Osbourne died in 2025.
But their music remains absolutely everywhere.
Festival campsites.
Pubs.
Cars.
Record collections.
Streaming playlists.
Bedrooms.
Battle jackets.
And inevitably, somebody somewhere discovers that old Monsters of Rock poster for the first time and has exactly the same reaction:
โWAITโฆ THEY ALL PLAYED ON THE SAME DAY?!โ
Yes.
They bloody well did.

Monsters of Rock 1986 wasnโt simply another festival.
It was one of those perfect snapshots of heavy music at a particular moment in time.
Warlock were bringing the European metal fire.
Motรถrhead were flattening everything in their path.
Def Leppard were standing on the edge of world domination.
Scorpions were already masters of the massive stage.
And Ozzy Osbourne was exactly where Ozzy belonged:
At the top of a gigantic heavy-metal bill, commanding an enormous field full of rock fans.
Forty years later, the names still make your jaw drop.
