Right then, Riff Report crew… let’s talk about the beautiful chaos that is tour logistics. 🤘🔥
Legendary prog titans Marillion have responded to fans constantly asking them to play “just one more city” — usually their city — and the answer is as honest as a pint at closing time.
“If it was practical and made financial sense to play EVERYWHERE, we would.”
And honestly? That’s the most rock ’n’ roll accountant sentence ever uttered.
🎭 The Romance vs The Reality
From the outside, touring looks like:
- Bright lights
- Sold-out halls
- Emotional singalongs
- A bit of dramatic hair flipping
From the inside, it’s more like:
- Venue hire
- Crew wages
- Transport lorries
- Fuel costs that could bankrupt a small kingdom
- Hotels
- Insurance
- Taxes
- And the terrifying gamble of “will enough tickets actually sell?”
Prog bands don’t teleport, mun. 🚛💨
Even a respected act like Marillion — who’ve built one of the most loyal fanbases in rock history — can’t just rock up to every town with a civic centre and a Greggs.
💰 Touring Is Basically Controlled Chaos
Here’s the bit people forget:
Every show is a risk.
If 2,000 people shout “COME TO LEEDS!” online, but only 700 actually buy tickets… that’s a loss. A painful one.
Bands don’t just think about:
- Who wants us?
- Where do we feel loved?
They have to think about:
- Can we break even?
- Can we pay the crew?
- Can we avoid losing tens of thousands?
Even heritage acts aren’t immune. The margins are tighter than skinny jeans at a metal festival buffet.
🧠 Marillion Know Their Audience
Marillion have always done things differently.
They pioneered crowdfunding before it was cool.
They’ve built direct relationships with fans that most bands would sacrifice a guitar tech for.
But even loyalty can’t bend the laws of economics. Gravity still works. Diesel still costs money. 🛢️
It’s not about ignoring cities.
It’s about survival.
❤️ The Bit That Matters
The key thing here?
They want to play everywhere.
That’s the emotional core of it.
No band enjoys telling fans they can’t make it to their hometown. But the world isn’t a romantic montage — it’s a spreadsheet with a drum fill.
If every tour stop made sense financially, you’d have gigs in every postcode from Swansea to Siberia.
🎶 The Bigger Picture
This isn’t just a Marillion issue.
It’s the reality for most touring artists in 2026.
Fuel prices, venue costs, staffing, rising production expectations — it’s brutal out there.
Next time a band skips your nearest city, it’s rarely personal. It’s physics. It’s maths. It’s the cold, hard logistics of hauling amplifiers across continents.
And yet… somehow… the shows still happen. The lights still go up. The encore still hits.
That’s the miracle of it. ✨
Rock doesn’t run on dreams alone.
It runs on vans, spreadsheets, and stubborn passion.
And that, butt, is still proper heroic. 🤘🔥
