Most bands used Unplugged as a comfy little greatest-hits set with acoustic toys. Not Nirvana. As Dave Grohl famously said:
โWe’d seen the other Unpluggeds and didn’t like many of themโฆ most bands treated them like rock concerts, playing their hits like it was Madison Square Garden โ except with acoustic guitars.โ

And Kurt, ever the chaotic genius, didnโt even want to lose MTVโs support while In Utero was rolling out its next single. MTV was still the gateway to millions of fans, so he agreed. But on one condition:

The whole scene felt intimate, eerie, and entirely out of step with the flashy MTV era โ like you were in the room with them, cross-legged on the floor, absorbing every tremble in his voice.

A traditional folk song, shaped by Lead Belly, one of Kurtโs all-time heroes. Cobain introduced him as:
โMy favourite performer ever.โ
And then he delivered that performance โ the one with the cracked final note that every music fan remembers.
When the recording wrapped, MTV begged for an encore.
Kurt simply shook his head.
There was no way โ no way โ he could top what just happened. And he was right. That moment was lightning in a bottle. A raw, unfiltered, soul-splitting howl from one of the greatest artists the world ever saw.
