But hold on, butt. 🎸
Because London’s theatre world has spent decades nicking some of rock and metal’s finest ingredients — huge choruses, ridiculous costumes, leather trousers, rebellion, sex, death, monsters, pyrotechnics and enough guitar solos to frighten the orchestra pit.
And some of the greatest rock musicals ever created have either called the West End home or thundered through London at some point.
So grab your interval pint, loosen the denim jacket and forget everything you thought you knew about jazz hands.

⚡ Jesus Christ Superstar
Let’s start with one of the absolute godfathers of the rock musical.
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar didn’t exactly approach biblical storytelling quietly.
Instead, they gave it electric guitars, enormous vocals, psychedelic rock, progressive flourishes and enough dramatic tension to make half the bands at Download Festival look positively chilled.
Songs including Superstar, Heaven on Their Minds, Gethsemane and What’s the Buzz have helped turn the production into one of the most enduring rock musicals ever written.
For rock fans who normally break out in a cold sweat at the mention of musical theatre, this is one of the easiest gateway drugs.
It’s loud.
It’s dramatic.
It’s theatrical as hell.
And when those vocals properly kick in, you’ll understand exactly why rock fans have embraced it for decades.

Teenage angst?
Murder?
Dark humour?

Based on the cult 1989 film, Heathers: The Musical takes the savage high-school comedy of the original and stuffs it full of gigantic rock-pop numbers.
The story follows Veronica Sawyer as she becomes tangled up with Westerburg High’s terrifyingly popular Heathers and the deeply troubled JD.
Things escalate quickly.
And by quickly, we mean murder, manipulation and complete social Armageddon.
Musically, though, it’s an absolute belter.
Tracks like Candy Store, Dead Girl Walking, Freeze Your Brain and Seventeen have become favourites with theatre fans, while the show’s black humour gives proceedings a properly rebellious edge.
It’s essentially teenage chaos with massive choruses.
What’s not to love?
🦇🔥 Bat Out of Hell: The Musical
Now we’re talking.
If somebody asked The Riff Report to design a musical after drinking six cans of energy drink and listening to Meat Loaf at maximum volume, we’d probably end up somewhere dangerously close to Bat Out of Hell.
Built around the music of legendary songwriter Jim Steinman, the production takes the enormous theatrical rock songs made famous by Meat Loaf and throws them into an equally ridiculous dystopian love story.
And we mean ridiculous as a compliment.
Motorbikes.
Leather.
Huge sets.
Huge vocals.
Huge guitars.
Everything is huge.
The soundtrack includes monsters such as:

Subtle?
Absolutely bloody not.
But that’s precisely the point.

You cannot make a list about rock musicals without Queen turning up.
It’s practically illegal.
Created around the music of Queen, We Will Rock You became an enormous West End success during its long run at London’s Dominion Theatre.
The story takes place in a strange future where individuality and rock music have effectively disappeared.
Naturally, somebody eventually needs to rediscover guitars.
Cue Queen.
The soundtrack is basically unfair:

Right.
Hair metal fans.

Rock of Ages is basically what happens when somebody builds a musical around the soundtrack of an ’80s rock pub jukebox.
The story follows aspiring musicians and dreamers trying to survive on Hollywood’s Sunset Strip during the glory days of enormous hair, questionable trousers and guitar solos lasting several geological eras.
And the soundtrack?
Absolute filth.
In the best possible way.

There are musicals.
And then there’s The Rocky Horror Show.
Richard O’Brien’s gloriously strange creation has spent decades combining rock ‘n’ roll, science fiction, horror, camp comedy and absolute filth into one of theatre’s greatest cult phenomena.
You’ve got:
Aliens.
Corsets.
Mad scientists.
Fishnets.
Motorbikes.
Audience heckling.
And one of the most recognisable musical numbers ever written.
You know the one.
The Time Warp.
Rocky Horror audiences aren’t exactly famous for sitting quietly with their hands folded.
People dress up.
People shout things.
People dance.
People who attended their first performance looking mildly terrified usually leave wondering what the hell just happened.
Basically…
a metal gig with more suspenders.

Imagine telling a classroom full of kids:
“Forget maths for five minutes. We’re starting a band.”
Suddenly school becomes considerably more appealing.
Based on the Jack Black film, School of Rock follows wannabe rock star Dewey Finn as he accidentally ends up teaching at a prestigious school.
Naturally, his educational priorities are slightly different.
Instead of conventional lessons, Dewey discovers his students can play instruments and secretly turns them into a rock band.
Is this responsible teaching?
Probably not.
Is it excellent theatre?
Absolutely.
The stage production became particularly famous because the young musicians genuinely perform much of the music live.
And watching a bunch of kids absolutely hammering guitars, bass and drums remains ridiculously entertaining.
Rock ‘n’ roll education.
Tidy.
💚💣 American Idiot
Green Day turning American Idiot into a musical could have gone horribly wrong.
Instead, it became one of the most celebrated punk-rock theatre productions of the modern era.
Based primarily around the band’s 2004 concept album, the show follows young people dealing with frustration, addiction, identity, relationships, war and the suffocating feeling of trying to find your place in modern America.
And because it’s Green Day, the soundtrack is outrageous.

It’s angry.
It’s emotional.
It’s messy.

Before rock operas became normal, The Who were already busy blowing the doors off convention.
Pete Townshend’s Tommy first appeared as a concept album in 1969 before evolving into film and stage productions.
The strange tale follows Tommy Walker, a traumatised child who becomes a pinball sensation and eventually a kind of messianic celebrity figure.
Yes.
Rock music was properly weird in the ’60s.
And thank God for that.
The soundtrack includes classics such as:

For anyone interested in the point where rock albums and musical theatre truly collided, Tommy is essential listening — and essential theatre history.
⚡🎸 Back to the Future: The Musical
Alright, technically Back to the Future isn’t a pure rock musical.
But hear us out.
The main character plays guitar.
There’s Johnny B. Goode.
There’s Huey Lewis.
There’s a giant DeLorean.
There are massive stage effects.
That’s enough evidence for us.
The stage adaptation took everything people loved about the 1985 film and somehow figured out how to make a bloody DeLorean appear to fly inside a theatre.
Which frankly feels like witchcraft.
The musical also features familiar tracks including:

Back in Time
Johnny B. Goode
alongside original songs written specifically for the production.
Its London run has finished, but with a UK tour following, there will still be plenty of opportunities to yell:

Dark, funny, catchy and considerably more twisted than your average night at the theatre.
🎭🤘 Maybe Musical Theatre Is More Metal Than We Thought…
Musical theatre and heavy music actually have far more in common than either side occasionally wants to admit.
Both love theatricality.
Both love enormous personalities.
Both love ridiculous costumes.
Both love storytelling.
Both love dramatic lighting.
Both involve audiences screaming lyrics back at performers.
And let’s be fair…
Iron Maiden have basically been doing musical theatre with guitar solos for decades.
Put Eddie on the West End and we’d buy a ticket immediately.
So next time someone suggests a night at the theatre, don’t automatically assume you’re facing three hours of polite applause and people singing about curtains.
