Band: TRIVAN
Hometown: Zagreb, Croatia ๐ญ๐ท
Genre: Black Metal / Melodic Black Metal / Death Metal / Heavy Metal
Founded By: Vanja ล antak
From the darkness of Zagreb, Croatia, comes TRIVAN โ a black metal outfit determined to carve its own path through the extreme-metal underground.
Founded and led by guitarist and songwriter Vanja ล antak, TRIVAN takes the foundations of black metal and pushes them into a broader musical landscape, bringing together darkness, melody, atmosphere and the considerable weight of heavy and death metal.
Rather than chaining themselves to one rigid definition of what black metal is supposed to sound like, TRIVAN are interested in something far more important:
Writing music that actually means something. ๐ค
๐ญ๐ท Born In Zagreb
TRIVAN emerged from Zagreb, Croatiaโs capital and home to an increasingly diverse heavy-music underground.
At the centre of everything is Vanja ล antak, the bandโs founder, guitarist and principal songwriter.
ล antakโs vision provides the foundations upon which TRIVAN has been constructed โ black metal at its core, but without treating genre boundaries as immovable walls.
That freedom allows the band to draw additional power from death metal and traditional heavy metal, while maintaining the darkness and atmosphere expected from its blackened foundations.
The result isnโt an exercise in ticking genre boxes.
Itโs TRIVAN.
๐ Black Metal Without The Rulebook
Black metal has never exactly suffered from a shortage of opinions about what is โ and isnโt โ sufficiently black metal.
TRIVAN arenโt particularly interested in joining that argument.
Instead, the band approaches the genre as a creative foundation rather than a strict set of instructions.
The black-metal core remains important, but around it sits the crushing weight of death metal, the power of heavy metal and a pronounced melodic identity.
Atmosphere is equally important.
Rather than relying exclusively on relentless aggression, TRIVANโs music is designed to create a sense of darkness and emotional depth.
The heaviness needs to hit.
But the music also needs to feel.
๐ธ Melody Amongst The Darkness
One of the defining characteristics of TRIVAN is the importance placed on melody.
Extreme metal and melody have always made surprisingly effective bedfellows, and TRIVAN use that contrast to give their songs a recognisable identity.
Darkness doesnโt have to mean sacrificing memorable guitar work.
Brutality doesnโt require abandoning emotion.
And black metal certainly doesnโt need to exist within one narrow musical framework.
By balancing aggression with melody and atmosphere, TRIVAN can move between different shades of heaviness without losing the central character of the band.
Itโs music designed not simply to batter the listener into submission, but to leave something behind once the final note disappears.
๐ค Emotion Before Orthodoxy
Perhaps the most important element of TRIVANโs philosophy is their emphasis on emotionally driven songwriting.
Rather than writing according to a checklist of genre conventions, the band allows the mood and emotional requirements of each composition to dictate where the music travels.
Sometimes that means embracing the colder atmosphere of black metal.
Elsewhere, the music can lean into death metalโs heavier impact or the more traditional power of heavy metal.
What matters is whether the song works.
Itโs a refreshingly straightforward approach in a corner of heavy music where debates surrounding genre purity can occasionally become almost as intense as the music itself.
TRIVAN arenโt here to pass the black-metal entrance exam.
Theyโre here to make dark, powerful music. ๐ค
โ๏ธ What Do TRIVAN Sound Like?
TRIVANโs musical identity is built around several interconnected elements:
Black metal provides the darkness and core aesthetic.
Death metal brings additional weight and aggression.
Heavy metal adds power and traditional metallic muscle.
Melody gives the songs their individual character.
And atmosphere ties everything together.
That combination allows TRIVAN to remain recognisably rooted in black metal while giving themselves plenty of space to explore beyond it.
Listeners can expect dark guitar work, aggressive rhythms, extreme vocals, melodic passages and an overriding sense that atmosphere matters every bit as much as sheer brutality.
In other words, this isnโt simply about playing everything as fast as humanly possible while somebody screams into the abyss.
Although, to be fair, thereโs usually room for a bit of that as well. ๐๐ค
๐ฅ TRIVAN โ Current Live Line-Up
TRIVANโs current live incarnation brings together four musicians:
Vanja ล antak โ Guitar
Ivek โ Bass
Robert โ Drums
Tomislav โ Vocals
With ล antakโs guitar work and songwriting forming the creative backbone, the live lineup gives that material the physical weight required to bring TRIVANโs dark musical world onto the stage.
And this is music built to become considerably more imposing when the lights go down.
๐ Darkness With Identity
Thereโs no shortage of black metal emerging from across Europe.
Standing apart therefore requires more than simply having distorted guitars, extreme vocals and a wardrobe apparently containing seventeen different shades of black.
TRIVANโs strength lies in refusing to treat genre conventions as creative restrictions.
Their black-metal foundations are unmistakable, but theyโre equally willing to embrace the muscular heaviness of death metal, the traditional power of heavy metal and melodies capable of cutting straight through the darkness.
That combination gives TRIVAN room to evolve.
And evolution is considerably more interesting than repetition.
๐ญ๐ท Croatiaโs Underground Keeps Getting Louder
TRIVAN also represents another reminder that Europeโs heavy-music landscape stretches far beyond the countries traditionally associated with metalโs biggest movements.
Croatia has its own underground.
Its own musicians.
Its own venues, bands and extreme-metal community.
And TRIVAN are adding another distinctive voice to that landscape.
From Zagreb, Vanja ล antak and company are building something that respects black metalโs darkness without allowing its conventions to dictate every creative decision.
No unnecessary boundaries.
No obsession with genre purity.
Just atmosphere, melody, emotion and heaviness.
๐ฅ The Riff Report
TRIVAN arenโt trying to win an argument about exactly which subgenre they belong to.
Theyโre doing something considerably more useful.
Theyโre writing the music they want to hear.
Led by founder and songwriter Vanja ล antak, the Zagreb outfit combine a black-metal core with the crushing weight of death metal, traditional heavy-metal muscle and a strong melodic identity.
Darkness matters.
Atmosphere matters.
But above everything else, emotion matters.
And when those ingredients collide?
You get TRIVAN.
Dark. Heavy. Melodic. Uncompromisingly their own. ๐ค๐ฅ๐ญ๐ท๐ค
