Sometimes a story lands on The Riff Report desk that requires serious journalism, careful analysis and thoughtful discussion.
This is absolutely not one of those stories. 😂
Good Charlotte have apparently delivered one of the most wonderfully random live moments we’ve seen in ages after stopping their set to crack open Pokémon cards onstage.
Yes, mun.
Pokémon cards.
Mid-gig.
And suddenly every bloke in his 30s and 40s who grew up listening to pop-punk while playing Pokémon on a Game Boy has experienced the ultimate collision of childhood nostalgia.
Gotta catch ‘em all — but apparently you’ve got to stop the gig first.
🎸 GOOD CHARLOTTE: “HANG ON, WE’VE GOT CARDS TO OPEN”
Footage shared online by Bigmouth Rock News captured the wonderfully bizarre moment, with Good Charlotte taking a break from the usual business of playing enormous pop-punk anthems to deal with something clearly much more urgent.
Opening Pokémon cards.
And you know what?
We respect the commitment. 😂
Because anyone who’s ever had a sealed Pokémon booster pack sitting in front of them knows there’s only one possible outcome.
You’re opening the bloody thing.
The gig can wait.
The next song can wait.
The encore can wait.
There could be thousands of people standing there wondering what’s occurring.
Doesn’t matter.
There might be something shiny in that packet.
⚡ POP-PUNK MEETS PIKACHU
Strangely enough, Good Charlotte and Pokémon actually make perfect sense together.
Think about it.
Pokémon became a cultural monster during the late 1990s, while the pop-punk explosion of the late ’90s and early 2000s produced an entire generation of teenagers wearing baggy trousers, wallet chains and enough eyeliner to frighten their grandparents.
Good Charlotte formed in Maryland in the mid-’90s before becoming one of the defining names of that era.
By the early 2000s, tracks including “The Anthem”, “Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous”, “Girls & Boys” and “Predictable” had turned the band into international stars.
Meanwhile, Pokémon had millions of youngsters desperately trying to catch them all.
Fast-forward a couple of decades and those youngsters are now adults.
We’ve got jobs.
We’ve got bills.
Some of us have kids.
Our backs hurt for absolutely no reason.
But show us a sealed packet of Pokémon cards and suddenly we’re ten years old again.
Nostalgia is a powerful beast, butt.
🃏 IMAGINE BEING IN THE CROWD
This is what makes live music brilliant.
You can stream practically every song ever recorded from your sofa these days, but Spotify isn’t suddenly going to stop halfway through a Good Charlotte track because somebody has found a Pokémon booster pack.
At a gig, anything can happen.
Imagine explaining this one afterwards.
“How were Good Charlotte?”
“Brilliant.”
“Did they play The Anthem?”
“Yeah.”
“Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous?”
“Yep.”
“Anything unusual happen?”
“They stopped the gig to open Pokémon cards.”
Perfect. No notes. 😂
That’s the sort of random little moment fans remember long after they’ve forgotten what order the songs were played in.
🎤 LIVE MUSIC DOESN’T NEED TO BE PERFECT
There’s another reason we love stuff like this at The Riff Report.
Modern arena and festival productions can be incredible.
You’ve got enormous video screens, synchronised lighting, pyro, lasers, confetti cannons, moving stages and enough technology backstage to launch a small satellite.
But some of the greatest gig memories come from things that were never supposed to happen.
A singer forgetting the lyrics.
A ridiculous bit of crowd banter.
Someone throwing something completely bizarre onto the stage.
A guitar refusing to cooperate.
A band member telling a story that goes wildly off track.
Or apparently…
Stopping the entire show because Pokémon cards have appeared.
Those moments remind you that there’s an actual band standing up there rather than a perfectly programmed entertainment machine.
Good Charlotte could simply have rattled through the set.
Instead, everyone got a story.
🔥 THE IMPORTANT QUESTION: WHAT DID THEY PULL?
Right.
Enough serious journalism.
There’s a much more important investigation required here.
WHAT WAS IN THE PACKS?!
Because if you’re going to stop a rock concert for Pokémon cards, we’re expecting something spectacular.
Imagine pulling an absolute beauty in front of thousands of people.
You wouldn’t even need the next song.
Just hold that card above your head while the lighting bloke hits every spotlight available.
Crowd goes mental.
Drummer starts smashing out a victory beat.
Confetti cannons fire.
Someone crowdsurfs dressed as Pikachu.
Security has absolutely no idea what’s happening.
Beautiful scenes.
And if the pack contained absolutely bugger all?
Quickly chuck it behind the drum riser and launch straight into “The Anthem”.
Nobody needs to know.
🎶 GOOD CHARLOTTE’S POP-PUNK LEGACY
Of course, behind all the Pokémon-related chaos is a band whose music has been part of the soundtrack to several generations of rock fans.
Good Charlotte emerged during an era when pop-punk was absolutely everywhere.
MTV was still massively influential.
Music videos mattered.
Band posters covered bedroom walls.
CD collections were precious.
And discovering a new favourite band could mean spending Saturday afternoon wandering around record shops rather than having an algorithm recommend something within seconds.
Good Charlotte became one of the bands most closely associated with that period, particularly following the success of their 2002 album The Young and the Hopeless.
For countless fans, those songs aren’t simply tracks.
They’re memories.
School.
First gigs.
First relationships.
Terrible haircuts.
Questionable fashion decisions.
Burned CDs.
MP3 players containing approximately 37 songs before declaring themselves completely full.
And yes…
Pokémon.
So seeing those worlds collide all these years later feels weirdly appropriate.
😂 ROCK STARS — THEY’RE JUST MASSIVE NERDS LIKE THE REST OF US
One of the funniest things about rock and metal is discovering what musicians get excited about when they’re not actually making music.
Behind the tattoos, leather jackets, enormous amplifiers and intimidating stage productions, there’s usually someone who can talk for three hours about wrestling, horror films, football, gaming, Star Wars, comic books or some ridiculously specific piece of musical equipment.
And apparently Pokémon cards can be added to the list.
Excellent.
More of this, please.
We want musicians comparing collections backstage.
We want Pokémon trades happening beside guitar techs.
We want festival VIP areas where somebody is desperately trying to swap three cards for the one they’ve been hunting for since 1999.
Actually…
Maybe don’t do that.
Festival weekends already empty our bank accounts quickly enough.
🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT
Good Charlotte stopping their set to open Pokémon cards might not change the history of rock ‘n’ roll.
It probably isn’t going to inspire the next generation of guitarists.
There won’t be a twelve-part documentary about it in twenty years.
But it’s fun.
And rock music could always use more moments that are simply fun.
Thousands of people coming together, singing songs they love and watching their favourite bands do something completely ridiculous is precisely the sort of nonsense we live for.
No drama.
No controversy.
Just Good Charlotte and Pokémon cards.
Absolutely tidy.
And somewhere out there, we like to imagine Pikachu has thrown on a black Good Charlotte hoodie, grabbed a skateboard and started blasting “The Anthem”.
⚡ Pokémon used Pop-Punk.
IT’S SUPER EFFECTIVE. 🤘😂
Now comes the important question for the Riff Report faithful:
Which rock or metal band would you most like to see stop mid-set for a Pokémon card opening?
Metallica?
Slipknot?
Green Day?
Iron Maiden?
Or imagine Ozzy Osbourne trying to work out which Pokémon he’d just pulled.
That alone would’ve been worth the ticket price. 😂
