The UK Government has issued a Severe Alert warning of a very high risk of wildfires nationally, urging residents, landowners and visitors to take extra care and avoid anything that could potentially start a fire.
And this is one of those warnings we absolutely shouldnโt ignore, mun. โค๏ธโ๐ฅ
With prolonged hot, dry conditions leaving grassland, woodland and countryside vulnerable, something as small as a spark or tiny flame could potentially develop into a serious wildfire incredibly quickly.
๐จ WHAT DOES THE ALERT SAY?
The Government warning states that there is a very high risk of wildfires nationally and asks people not to undertake activities that could start a fire.
That includes:
- ๐ฅ Disposable barbecues
- ๐ฅ Firepits
- ๐ฅ Garden incinerators
- ๐ Fireworks
- ๐ฅ Any other activity involving an open flame or capable of creating sparks
The warning stresses that even a small flame can rapidly develop into a major wildfire, potentially putting lives, homes, businesses and emergency responders at risk.
๐๏ธ FESTIVAL AND CAMPING CREW โ TAKE NOTE
This one is particularly worth remembering for anyone heading camping, travelling to festivals or spending the weekend outdoors.
We love a campsite feed as much as anybody โ few things scream British summer quite like trying to cook something questionable outside while simultaneously wondering whether those clouds are about to ruin your weekend.
But when wildfire conditions are this severe, leave the disposable BBQ at home.
If youโre heading to a campsite or festival, check the eventโs current rules regarding cooking equipment before travelling. Individual sites may introduce additional restrictions depending on local conditions.
And absolutely do not light fires or BBQs in areas where theyโre prohibited.
The burger isnโt worth setting half the hillside ablaze, butt.
๐ณ PLEASE LOOK AFTER OUR COUNTRYSIDE
For those of us in Wales, weโre incredibly lucky to have mountains, valleys, forests and miles upon miles of beautiful countryside practically on our doorstep.
But during exceptionally dry weather, that landscape can become dangerously vulnerable.
A discarded cigarette, poorly extinguished BBQ or seemingly insignificant flame can have consequences far beyond the person responsible.
Wildfires can devastate wildlife habitats, destroy vegetation, threaten homes and businesses and put firefighters and other emergency workers directly in harmโs way.
So please use your common sense.
If youโre out walking, camping, attending festivals or simply enjoying the sunshine, leave nothing behind that could potentially start a fire.

The Government is asking people to follow official updates and report signs of fire immediately.
If you see a wildfire or believe a fire is developing, move somewhere safe and call 999.
Donโt attempt to tackle a significant wildfire yourself.
Conditions can change rapidly, and fires can spread far faster than people expect, particularly when vegetation is extremely dry or thereโs wind involved.
