What’s occurring, metalheads? Gather round, c’mon butt, because today we salute one of the most gloriously unhinged, skull-rattling, fan-melting box sets ever unleashed upon planet Earth.
On this day in 1993, Metallica dropped ‘Live Sh*t: Binge & Purge’ — a monstrous, heavy-as-a-lorry treasure chest of live chaos starring the Seattle ‘89 shows, the San Diego ‘92 madness, and the iconic Mexico City ‘93 carnage that practically set the venue on fire with vibes alone.
This wasn’t just a release.
This was Metallica looking at the live-album format and going:
➡️ “Let’s do everything… but bigger, louder, dirtier, and more over the top.”
🤘 WHAT MADE THE BOX SET SO RIDICULOUSLY MASSIVE?
We’re talking:
🎤 Hours upon hours of live Metallica at their peak
🎸 Three full concerts, each more feral than the last
📼 VHS tapes (yes, actual tapes – only in the ‘90s, mun!)
📀 CDs packed with riffs that could wake the dead
📓 A tour diary-style book featuring art, notes, chaos and carnage
🎟️ Even replica backstage passes because why the hell not
This thing weighed about as much as Lars’ ego and looked like it had been nicked straight off a roadie’s flight case. Proper job!
🔥 THE SHOWS: PURE, RAW, SWEATY METAL CARNAGE
🟣 Seattle 1989 — The Thrash Era: Nuclear Edition
Metallica at their hungriest. Hair flying everywhere. The crowd losing their minds like they’d just been given free tickets to Valhalla.
Tracks like Blackened, One, and Battery hit so hard you can almost feel the pyro singeing your eyebrows.
🔵 San Diego 1992 — The Black Album Machine
At this point, Metallica weren’t a band.
They were a juggernaut.
A riff-powered tank crushing arenas worldwide.
Hetfield is peak Papa Het, bellowing lyrics like a man possessed, and Kirk is shredding so fast it’s a wonder the cameras didn’t melt.
🔴 Mexico City 1993 — 100,000 Fans and ZERO Chill
Mate… the Mexico City crowd alone could power the National Grid.
People fainting, screaming, climbing, chanting — lush chaos.
The band feeds off it like dragons on espresso.
This is Metallica conquering a nation in real time.
🤘 WHY ‘BINGE & PURGE’ STILL SLAPS HARDER THAN A TOM ARAYA SCREAM
Because it captures something you can’t fake:
➡️ A band at absolute full throttle
➡️ Zero polish, zero filters, zero corporate nonsense
➡️ Just four blokes onstage blowing the roof off entire continents
No fancy editing, no overdubs, no “fix it in the mix.”
This was live metal the way it’s meant to be: dirty, loud, sweating bullets, and completely unhinged.
It became the gold standard for live metal releases. And honestly? Few bands have even come close since.
Only Metallica would drop a live boxed set this enormous and call it “Binge & Purge”, like it’s some sort of light snack. Classic.
🥁 THE LEGACY
Even decades later, fans still call this one of the greatest live collections ever put to tape. It’s been reissued, remastered, worshipped, quoted, memed, and memoralised in every corner of metal fandom.
Ask any old-school fan and they’ll tell you:
“If you haven’t seen Mexico City ‘93… you haven’t lived.”
🤘 FINAL THOUGHT
‘Live Sh*t: Binge & Purge’ wasn’t just a release.
It was Metallica declaring:
“We are the biggest metal band on Earth. And here’s seven hours proving it.”
Tidy. Absolutely tidy.
