🗓 Live at Utilita Arena Cardiff – January 26–27, 2025
🎸 By The Riff Report – Moshpit Division

🏰 Welcome to the Metal Kingdom: Cardiff 2025

There are gigs. There are shows. And then there are nights where the walls sweat, the pits churn like whirlpools, and grown adults cry into their beer because “Tears Don’t Fall” still hits like a freight train to the chest.

January 2025 in Cardiff delivered one of those nights—twice.

The “Poisoned Ascendancy” UK Tour landed in the Welsh capital like a sonic battering ram. Bullet For My Valentine and Trivium, two of the most iconic names in 2000s metalcore, brought the thunder to Utilita Arena Cardiff with a promise: full playthroughs of The Poison and Ascendancy.

And let’s get this out of the way early—Atreyu was not on the bill, despite the rumour mill doing overtime. We’ll get to that bit, butt.

🎟️ The Build-Up: Nostalgia + Hype = Chaos Incoming

When this tour was announced, fans collectively lost their marbles.

Two seminal albums. One stage. Full sets.
You could practically smell the eyeliner and studded belts. We were back in 2005, baby. The MySpace era. The Kerrang! TV glory days. “Join us in death” was still a lifestyle choice. 😈

Cardiff was buzzing. Both nights sold out fast, with fans travelling from as far as Germany, Spain, and Pembrokeshire (a very long bus ride, trust me) to see this legendary double-bill.

The merch stand had lines like it was Glasto. Black hoodies, classic artwork, retro shirt reprints—it was a goth’s Christmas.

🤘 Trivium: Ascending Into Chaos

Let’s talk about the first act of destruction: Trivium.

They hit the stage with the force of a freight train. Matt Heafy, as ever, was a whirlwind of charisma, blasting out Rain with precision and passion that could’ve shaken the valleys.

🎶 Full Ascendancy Setlist:

  • Rain ☔
  • Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr 🔥
  • Drowned and Torn Asunder
  • Ascendancy
  • A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation
  • Like Light to the Flies
  • Dying in Your Arms 💔
  • The Deceived
  • Suffocating Sight
  • Departure
  • Declaration

From start to finish, Ascendancy felt timeless. The crowd roared back every lyric like it was 2005 and the world was made of Monster Energy and Warped Tour flyers.

The mosh pits opened like ritual sacrifice zones. A Gunshot… had limbs flailing, and Dying in Your Arms saw metalheads locking eyes and pretending not to cry.

Matt’s vocals? 🔥
Cory’s solos? 🥵
Paolo’s bass? Bone-rattling.
Alex’s drums? Proper chaos. 🥁

If this was just the gig, people would’ve left satisfied. But we weren’t even halfway through yet, mun.

🧃 Intermission Chaos: Beer Prices & Atreyu Confusion

Alright, let’s address it.

During the changeover, the rumour started spreading again: “I heard Atreyu are coming out for a surprise slot.”
Nope.
“Maybe a guest song with BFMV?”
Nah.
“My cousin saw them backstage!”
Your cousin lied.

Despite some posters and outdated listings, Atreyu were NOT part of the Cardiff stop. They’d joined other dates on the Euro leg but not this one. Still, the myth lives on.

Meanwhile, over at the bar: £7.50 a pint. That’s not beer. That’s daylight robbery with foam on top.

Shout out to the security staff handing out water and being absolute legends. One even moshed during Trivium. Proper job!

🎤 Bullet For My Valentine: Homecoming Heroes

If Trivium gave us the war cry, Bullet For My Valentine gave us the heartbreak and the hammer.

This was a home turf gig for Matt Tuck, and you could feel it. The crowd erupted like the Valleys won the World Cup when they launched into Her Voice Resides.

💔 Full The Poison Setlist:

  • Intro (Spineshank-style synths got the crowd primed)
  • Her Voice Resides
  • 4 Words (To Choke Upon)
  • Tears Don’t Fall 😭
  • Suffocating Under Words of Sorrow
  • Hit the Floor
  • All These Things I Hate (Revolve Around Me)
  • Room 409
  • The Poison
  • 10 Years Today
  • Cries in Vain
  • Spit You Out
  • The End

And if that wasn’t enough, they kept going.

Encore tracks included:

  • Waking the Demon
  • Your Betrayal
  • Don’t Need You

The emotion in the room during Tears Don’t Fall was unreal. You could see 40-year-old men clutching their partners, whispering “this was our song in sixth form”. Then headbanging so hard they probably slipped a disc.

🔥 Crowd Watch: Mosh Pits, Mayhem & Metal Fashion Crimes

Let’s take a moment for the crowd. Because Cardiff showed up HARD.

👕 Outfit of the night went to a guy in a Poison-era denim vest, camo shorts, a cowboy hat, and Crocs.
🎉 There were inflatable guitars. Inflatable sharks. An actual inflatable coffin floating over the pit at one point.
🤘 Pit MVP: A lad with a broken arm in a sling who STILL managed to circle pit during Room 409.

And we need to shout out the balcony crew—those legends were headbanging in sync. It looked like a stadium wave but with more whiplash.

💿 Nostalgia vs Now: Do These Albums Still Hold Up?

Short answer? Hell yes. Long answer? Let’s riff it out.

  • Ascendancy was Trivium’s breakout moment—a perfect blend of melody, thrash, and youthful fury.
  • The Poison was the heartbreak gospel of every emo-metal kid in the UK.

Hearing them live in full proved how much they still matter. These aren’t just old favourites—they’re genre-defining. The riffs still slap, the solos still sing, and the lyrics still get stuck in your head days later.

And in 2025, they feel more essential than ever.

📸 Setlist Selfies & Pit Cam

Socials exploded. Hashtags like #BFMVCardiff and #AscendancyLive were trending faster than a Limp Bizkit meme. Here’s what the internet saw:

  • A GoPro helmet cam vid of a lad taking a flying leap off someone’s shoulders during The End
  • A girl holding up a “Tears Do Fall” sign, mascara running and smiling like a banshee
  • A TikTok of someone proposing during 10 Years Today – she said yes AND stage-dived

🕯️ In Memoriam: Lost Voices and Sore Necks

Let’s all take a moment for:

  • The lad who lost his voice by song 3 (but still screamed until the end)
  • The girl who broke a Doc Marten stomping too hard
  • Everyone who had to go to work the next day sounding like Cookie Monster 🥲

🧠 What We Learned

  • Welsh crowds don’t mess about.
  • You never outgrow your favourite album.
  • Atreyu weren’t there. Let it go.
  • Cardiff deserves more tours like this.
  • Two bands, two albums, one absolutely banging night.

🎤 Final Thoughts from The Riff Report

This wasn’t just a gig. It was a celebration. A time warp. A riot. A bloody love letter to one of the best eras in modern metal.

Cardiff brought the fire. Bullet brought the heartbreak. Trivium brought the thunder.

And you, yes YOU, the reader who’s probably got tinnitus and sore calves? You were part of history, butt.

⭐ Final Rating:

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 / 5 Air Guitars

  • Energy: 💯
  • Sound: Crystal skull-shattering
  • Crowd: Rowdy, respectful, ridiculous
  • Value: Worth every penny (even that £40 hoodie)
  • Atreyu: Still not there, mun

📸 Got pics? Send ‘em to us at @RiffReportBlog on Insta and we might feature your sweaty mug in our recap reel!

🛒 Missed the merch? We’ll be doing a Riff Report Tribute Tee – stay tuned.

Until next time, keep it loud, keep it lush, and NEVER skip The Poison.

Diolch, Cardiff. You beautiful, scream-loving beasts. 🤘

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
