Sometimes the biggest ideas begin with something incredibly personal.

Not in a boardroom. Not with a massive marketing campaign. Not with somebody waving a clipboard around and using words like synergy.

Sometimes they begin with two people simply asking:

“How can we make this more inclusive?”

For engaged couple Cathal Cully and Rebecca Wilson, that question initially centred around their wedding.

Both Cathal and Rebecca are late-diagnosed neurodivergent adults, and while planning their big day they began thinking about how they could create a wedding that was not only brilliant and memorable, but also inclusive, understanding and sensory-considerate.

From that deeply personal starting point came something much bigger.

Something that has grown beyond one wedding and into a wider campaign dedicated to awareness, understanding, representation and positive change.

Welcome to Different Minds, Same Heart. 💙

And here at The Riff Report, we absolutely love what this campaign stands for.

🧠 DIFFERENT MINDS. SAME HEART.

At its core, Different Minds, Same Heart is a neurodiversity awareness campaign founded by Cathal and Rebecca.

Its mission is beautifully straightforward: break stigmas, raise awareness and get people talking about autism, ADHD and neurodiversity.

Because while awareness surrounding neurodivergence has undoubtedly increased, misunderstanding and stereotypes haven’t magically disappeared.

For many adults, discovering that they’re autistic, have ADHD or are otherwise neurodivergent can happen surprisingly late in life.

That late diagnosis can bring a complicated mixture of emotions.

There can be relief.

Validation.

Questions.

Reflection.

And perhaps an entirely new understanding of experiences stretching back through childhood, school, work, relationships and everyday life.

Cathal and Rebecca bring those lived experiences directly into their campaign.

Rather than simply talking about neurodivergent people, Different Minds, Same Heart aims to help amplify neurodivergent voices themselves.

And that’s hugely important.

💍 IT STARTED WITH A WEDDING…

Now here’s where the story gets particularly lovely.

Different Minds, Same Heart originally grew from Cathal and Rebecca’s plans to create a more inclusive and sensory-considerate wedding.

Weddings are supposed to be joyful occasions.

But think about the average wedding for a moment.

Crowded rooms.

Lots of conversations happening simultaneously.

Music.

Bright lighting.

Unfamiliar surroundings.

Changes in routine.

Social expectations.

People you’ve never met suddenly asking what you do for a living while you’re desperately trying to remember whether you’ve already spoken to Uncle Dave.

😂

For some neurodivergent guests, all of that can become overwhelming.

So Cathal and Rebecca began thinking differently about their own celebration.

And somewhere along the way, that conversation became bigger than the wedding itself.

Because if we can think more carefully about inclusion at weddings, why stop there?

What about workplaces?

Schools?

Concerts?

Festivals?

Venues?

Restaurants?

Public spaces?

Community events?

And, crucially, everyday conversations?

Suddenly, Different Minds, Same Heart wasn’t simply about making one special day more accessible.

It had the potential to become part of a much wider conversation.

💙 BREAKING THE STIGMAS

One of the campaign’s key areas of work is its Breaking the Stigmas series.

And let’s face it, there’s still plenty of stigma that needs smashing.

Neurodiversity isn’t one single experience.

Autistic people aren’t all the same.

People with ADHD aren’t all the same.

Two people can share the same diagnosis and experience the world in completely different ways.

That’s precisely why lived experience and open conversations matter so much.

Different Minds, Same Heart seeks to challenge misconceptions rather than allowing outdated stereotypes to dominate the conversation.

It’s about replacing assumptions with listening.

Judgement with understanding.

Stigma with conversation.

And silence with voices.

That’s a campaign we can absolutely get behind. 🤘💙

🌟 MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Alongside Breaking the Stigmas, Cathal and Rebecca also run their Making a Difference series.

This side of the campaign highlights individuals, organisations and initiatives creating positive change.

That’s another important part of advocacy.

Because awareness isn’t just about pointing towards what’s going wrong.

It’s also about celebrating the people who are getting things right.

Whether that’s improving accessibility, starting conversations, challenging stereotypes, creating inclusive spaces or simply helping somebody feel understood, positive change deserves recognition.

And sometimes highlighting one good idea can encourage ten more people to try something similar.

That’s how movements grow.

One conversation becomes another.

One person shares their experience.

Somebody reading it suddenly thinks:

“Bloody hell. That’s exactly how I feel.”

And suddenly they don’t feel quite so alone.

That’s powerful stuff.

🎤 TAKING THE MESSAGE FURTHER

Different Minds, Same Heart isn’t confined to social media posts either.

Cathal and Rebecca are spreading their message through media appearances, public speaking, collaborations and conversations with others.

Every platform provides another opportunity to reach someone who might otherwise never encounter these discussions.

And importantly, they’re doing it through lived experience.

There’s something incredibly valuable about hearing directly from people who’ve actually navigated these experiences themselves.

Not a textbook definition.

Not somebody speaking for an entire community.

Real people.

Real experiences.

Real conversations.

Because neurodiversity is human.

Messy, complicated, fascinating, individual human experience.

🤘 WHY THE ROCK AND METAL COMMUNITY SHOULD BE LISTENING

This is where we put our Riff Report hat firmly on.

Because conversations around neurodiversity and accessibility matter enormously within live music.

We bloody love gigs.

We love festivals.

We love standing in fields while somebody fires pyro into the sky and a guitarist plays something loud enough to rearrange your internal organs.

🔥🤘

But live music environments can also involve enormous amounts of sensory input.

Loud music.

Flashing lights.

Pyrotechnics.

Huge crowds.

Queues.

Changes to schedules.

Unfamiliar locations.

Crowded bars.

Constant movement.

Finding toilets.

Working out where you’re supposed to be.

Trying to locate your mates after they’ve disappeared because somebody apparently needed chips halfway through the headline set.

For many neurodivergent fans, these things can present additional challenges.

That doesn’t mean turning gigs into silent libraries.

Nobody is asking Slipknot to replace the pyro with a nice scented candle.

😂

It means thinking about choice, communication and accessibility.

Clear information before events can help.

Knowing where quieter spaces are located can help.

Understanding accessibility options can help.

Clear signage can help.

Sensory-considerate areas can help.

Staff awareness can help.

And simply recognising that not everybody experiences the same environment in the same way can make a massive difference.

🎸 DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES. SAME HEARTBEAT.

Which brings us to a line that feels tailor-made for the music community:

Different Frequencies. Same Heartbeat. 💙

What an absolutely cracking way of putting it.

Because rock and metal have always attracted people who don’t necessarily fit neatly into society’s little boxes.

The outsiders.

The obsessives.

The collectors.

The people who can tell you precisely which pressing of an album you’ve accidentally picked up in a charity shop.

The bloke wearing shorts at Bloodstock when it’s absolutely hammering down.

The person who’s followed the same band around Britain fourteen times.

The fans who find comfort, identity, friendship and community through music.

We’re all tuned slightly differently.

And that’s the bloody beauty of it.

🫶 INCLUSION DOESN’T MEAN EVERYONE NEEDS THE SAME THING

One of the most useful things wider society can understand about neurodiversity is that inclusion doesn’t necessarily mean treating everybody identically.

Sometimes inclusion means recognising that different people need different things to participate comfortably.

For one person, that might mean somewhere quieter to decompress.

For somebody else, detailed information ahead of an event.

Another person might use ear defenders.

Someone might need extra time.

Someone else might simply need the people around them to understand why they’re experiencing something differently.

There’s no universal neurodivergent experience.

And that’s why campaigns built around conversations and lived experiences can be so valuable.

The objective isn’t to speak for everybody.

It’s to create space for more people to speak.

💙 FROM ONE WEDDING TO SOMETHING MUCH BIGGER

There’s something genuinely brilliant about the journey of Different Minds, Same Heart.

Cathal and Rebecca started by thinking about how they could make their wedding more inclusive.

That personal conversation became an idea.

The idea became a campaign.

And the campaign became an opportunity to start conversations with people far beyond their original plans.

That’s how change often happens.

Not through some enormous overnight revolution.

But through people noticing something could be better and deciding to do something about it.

Then somebody else listens.

Then somebody shares it.

Then another conversation starts.

And suddenly the ripple travels further than anyone expected.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT SUPPORTS DIFFERENT MINDS, SAME HEART

At The Riff Report, we’re all about community.

Yes, we’re here for riffs.

We’re here for festivals.

We’re here for gigs, albums, ridiculous solos, muddy fields, questionable festival breakfasts and standing in a merch queue wondering whether we can financially justify buying another black T-shirt.

Spoiler alert: apparently we always can.

😂🤘

But music communities are ultimately about people.

And if we’re serious about making rock, metal and live entertainment welcoming communities, then conversations around neurodiversity, accessibility and inclusion deserve to be part of that.

Different Minds, Same Heart is helping keep those conversations moving.

Through lived experience.

Through education.

Through collaboration.

Through storytelling.

And through celebrating people who are already making a difference.

Cathal Cully and Rebecca Wilson may have started this journey while planning their wedding, but what they’ve created has the potential to reach far beyond that special day.

So here’s to different minds.

Here’s to listening.

Here’s to learning.

Here’s to smashing outdated stigmas.

And here’s to building spaces where more people feel understood, respected and welcome.

Because we don’t all experience the world in exactly the same way.

We don’t need to.

💙 DIFFERENT MINDS. SAME HEART.

🎵 DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES. SAME HEARTBEAT.

Keep talking.

Keep listening.

Keep making a difference.

And keep making some bloody noise for inclusion. 🤘💙

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Proudly supporting a more inclusive community.
