Swansea has said an emotional goodbye to one of Walesโ€™ most recognisable voices, as fans, friends and loved ones gathered to pay their respects to Bonnie Tyler.

There are some voices you recognise before your brain has even had time to process the song.

That unmistakable rasp. That power. That enormous chorus arriving like somebody has just kicked the doors off their hinges.

For generations of music fans, Bonnie Tyler was one of those voices.

And in Swansea, the city and surrounding communities that formed such an important part of her story came together for a final farewell to a woman who took a Welsh voice around the world. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿด

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ A FINAL FAREWELL IN SWANSEA

Bonnie Tylerโ€™s funeral took place at Swansea Minster, with fans gathering to pay their respects and celebrate an extraordinary life in music.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Neath, Bonnie remained enormously proud of her Welsh roots throughout a career that turned her into an international star.

Despite performing on some of the biggest stages in the world and selling millions of records, Wales was never simply a line in Bonnie Tylerโ€™s biography.

It was home.

And that made the scenes surrounding her funeral particularly poignant.

Fans gathered along the route as her coffin made its final journey, while mourners came together to remember not simply the superstar behind some of rock and popโ€™s biggest songs, but the woman behind that instantly recognisable voice.

Her coffin was adorned with flowers, while the Welsh flag formed part of the farewell โ€” a fitting tribute to a singer who carried Wales with her throughout her remarkable career.

For Welsh music fans, this one hit differently, mun. ๐Ÿด

๐ŸŽถ โ€œTOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEARTโ€ BECOMES A SONG OF FAREWELL

Among the most emotional moments of the service was a choral performance of โ€œTotal Eclipse of the Heart.โ€

Normally, those opening notes mean one thing.

Volume up.

Everything else can wait.

But on this occasion, one of Bonnie Tylerโ€™s greatest songs took on an entirely different meaning.

A track heard at weddings, parties, arenas, karaoke nights and probably more questionable 2am pub singalongs than humanity could ever count became a farewell to the woman who made it immortal.

And what a song to leave behind.

Released in 1983, โ€œTotal Eclipse of the Heartโ€ became a global phenomenon and remains one of the defining power ballads of all time.

Written by Jim Steinman, the song gave Bonnie the perfect vehicle for that enormous, gloriously weathered voice.

More than four decades later, you still only need those first few seconds before somebody somewhere starts preparing themselves for:

TURN AROUNDโ€ฆ

You know the rest. โค๏ธ

๐ŸŽค FROM SOUTH WALES TO THE WORLD

Bonnie Tylerโ€™s story remains one of Welsh musicโ€™s greatest success stories.

Long before the international tours, massive singles and global recognition, she was Gaynor Hopkins โ€” a girl from South Wales with a voice that was eventually going to become impossible for the rest of the world to ignore.

Her breakthrough arrived during the 1970s, with songs including โ€œLost in Franceโ€ and โ€œItโ€™s a Heartacheโ€ establishing her internationally.

Then came the 1980s.

And things went absolutely massive.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Total Eclipse of the Heart

๐Ÿ”ฅ Holding Out for a Hero

๐Ÿ”ฅ Faster Than the Speed of Night

These werenโ€™t just successful records.

They became part of popular culture.

โ€œHolding Out for a Heroโ€ alone has enjoyed an extraordinary second, third and probably fifteenth life through films, television programmes, adverts, sporting events and countless covers.

Bonnieโ€™s music simply refused to disappear.

๐Ÿ–ค THAT VOICE

Plenty of singers can hit impressive notes.

Far fewer possess a voice where one syllable is enough to identify them.

Bonnie Tyler had that.

Her famous raspy vocal sound gave her music an edge that separated her from the polished pop voices surrounding her.

There was grit in it.

There was vulnerability.

There was rock โ€™nโ€™ roll.

Even when Bonnie was standing in the middle of an enormous Jim Steinman production surrounded by crashing drums, huge guitars, synthesisers and enough musical drama to power half of Swansea, that voice still cut straight through everything.

You couldnโ€™t manufacture it.

You couldnโ€™t mistake it.

It was Bonnie.

๐Ÿด PROUDLY WELSH, ALWAYS

For us here at The Riff Report, there is something particularly special about seeing somebody from our little corner of the world conquer the planet without ever forgetting where they came from.

Wales has always punched ridiculously above its weight musically.

From Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey to Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics, Bullet For My Valentine, Skindred and countless others, this country keeps producing voices and bands that travel far beyond our borders.

Bonnie Tyler absolutely belongs among those names.

She didnโ€™t simply become famous despite coming from South Wales.

She proudly represented it.

That matters.

Especially to the next kid sitting in a bedroom somewhere in Neath, Swansea, Port Talbot, Merthyr, Newport or the Valleys wondering whether somebody from their town could ever make it.

Bonnie proved the answer was yes.

And then some.

๐ŸŒน MORE THAN THE BIG HITS

It would be easy to reduce Bonnie Tylerโ€™s career to two enormous songs.

But her story was far bigger than โ€œTotal Eclipse of the Heartโ€ and โ€œHolding Out for a Hero.โ€

Her recording career stretched across decades.

She continued releasing music, touring internationally and performing for audiences around the world long after many of her contemporaries had stepped away.

She represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 with โ€œBelieve in Me,โ€ introducing another generation to that unmistakable Welsh rasp.

And through every different era of music โ€” punk, new wave, glam metal, grunge, Britpop, nu metal, streaming and TikTok โ€” Bonnie Tyler remained Bonnie Tyler.

No reinvention needed.

No pretending to be something she wasnโ€™t.

Just that voice.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ SWANSEA SAYS GOODBYE

Perhaps the most powerful thing about Bonnie Tylerโ€™s final farewell wasnโ€™t celebrity.

It wasnโ€™t chart positions.

It wasnโ€™t record sales.

It was people.

Ordinary fans standing together because somebodyโ€™s music had meant something to them.

Thatโ€™s the strange and wonderful power musicians have.

Most fans never personally meet the artists whose records soundtrack their lives.

Yet those songs are there.

During first loves.

Break-ups.

Road trips.

Weddings.

Funerals.

Saturday nights.

Sunday mornings.

Brilliant days.

Absolutely rotten ones.

Music sneaks into the important bits of our lives and stays there.

Bonnie Tyler provided that soundtrack for millions of people.

So when fans gathered in Swansea to say goodbye, they werenโ€™t merely mourning a famous singer.

Many were saying farewell to a little piece of their own history.

๐Ÿ–ค A WELSH VOICE THAT WILL NEVER REALLY GO QUIET

Artists leave us.

Songs donโ€™t.

Somewhere tonight, somebody will play โ€œTotal Eclipse of the Heart.โ€

Somebody will belt out โ€œHolding Out for a Heroโ€ with absolutely no concern whatsoever for whether theyโ€™re hitting the notes.

A radio station will play โ€œItโ€™s a Heartache.โ€

A teenager will discover Bonnie Tyler for the first time.

And somewhere in Wales, somebody will hear that voice and proudly remind everyone within a ten-foot radius:

โ€œSheโ€™s Welsh, you know.โ€

Of course we bloody will.

Because thatโ€™s what we do. ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ˜‚

Bonnie Tyler took a voice forged in South Wales and made the entire world listen.

Swansea may have said its final goodbye.

But every time those opening notes ring out and that unmistakable rasp comes blasting through the speakers, Bonnie Tyler will be right there again.

Rest easy, Bonnie. ๐Ÿ–ค

Thank you for the songs.

Thank you for the memories.

And thank you for making Wales incredibly proud.

๐Ÿด๐Ÿค˜ Forever Welsh. Forever loud. Forever Bonnie Tyler. ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿด
