Well, this oneโs got fans proper tamping, mun. ๐ก
Manchesterโs shiny new Co-op Live arena โ the UKโs biggest indoor venue and supposedly the crown jewel of live music โ has found itself in a storm of controversy after charging ยฃ25 to blue badge holders just to park. Yep, even disabled fans are being hit with arena-price parking fees.
For a venue thatโs been sold to the public as โinclusiveโ and โaccessible to allโ, thatโs a pretty sour note to hit before the amps even warm up. ๐ธ
๐ฐ The ยฃ25 Question
According to the official Co-op Live website, accessible (blue badge) parking must be booked in advance and costs ยฃ25 per event. No special discount, no free allocation โ just the same price as everyone else.
๐ Co-op Liveโs parking page literally states:
โAccessible parking is available at Co-op Live for ยฃ25 and must be reserved in advance.โ
Thatโs not a rumour. Thatโs straight from the venueโs own text.
But hereโs the kicker โ some accessibility guides still say parking is free for blue badge holders. ๐ง
- Rolling N Rocking claims: โBlue badge holders can park for free but must book online.โ
- Able2UK also says accessible parking โis free of charge when providing a blue badge.โ
So what gives? Did Co-op Live quietly change its policy, or are they just making a mess of communicating it? Either way, disabled gig-goers are being left confused, and quite a few are calling it an โaccess tax.โ
๐ง What Might Be Going On
Hereโs what weโve pieced together, butt:
- The venue did originally advertise free accessible parking back in early press briefings.
- Somewhere along the line, that shifted to ยฃ25 โVertu Parkingโ โ their official paid system.
- There might be limited free spots for nearby off-site disabled bays, but those arenโt the ones linked directly through Co-op Liveโs booking site.
Basically: if you want to park close to the door, youโll pay ยฃ25 โ even with a blue badge.
๐ฌ Fans Arenโt Having It
Fans have taken to social media and TripAdvisor to vent their fury. One disabled gig-goer wrote:
โI thought accessibility meant helping people get there โ not charging us for the privilege.โ
Another said:
โItโs a disgrace. We already have extra costs to consider with travel and mobility โ now ยฃ25 just to park? Nah.โ
Some have even pointed out the irony that the venue is called Co-op Live โ a brand built on community and fairness. Not the kind of move that screams โweโre all in this together,โ eh?
๐ What You Can Actually Do
If youโve got tickets to an upcoming gig at Co-op Live and need accessible parking, hereโs your best plan of attack:
- Book early: Spaces go live up to four weeks before each event and go fast.
- Check your confirmation email: Make sure it says โAccessible Parkingโ โ not just โGeneral Parking.โ
- Email them directly: Ask whether your blue badge exempts you from the ยฃ25 fee. (Spoiler: probably not, but itโs worth trying.)
- Consider off-site options: Manchester has plenty of city-centre car parks with blue badge bays โ and most are cheaper (or free).
- Speak up: If you think ยฃ25 for accessible parking is unfair, tell them. Post on socials, contact local MPs, or even tag Co-op Live publicly. Pressure works.
๐งพ The Bigger Picture
This isnโt just about one car park. Itโs about how the UKโs biggest new arena treats accessibility โ not as an add-on, but as a core right for fans.
Music venues across the country are working hard to make shows more inclusive: hearing loops, companion tickets, level access. But if you canโt afford to park near the door because youโve got mobility issues, all that effort starts to feel a bit hollow.
Cโmon Co-op Live โ youโve got the power, the sponsors, and the spotlight. Make it tidy again and drop the fee for blue badge holders. Show the fans that โaccessibleโ actually means something.
