ANTHRAX pulled off one hell of a last-minute rescue in San Antonio, recruiting RAVEN and former FEAR FACTORY drummer Mike Heller just hours before taking the stage at the Alamodome after longtime drummer Charlie Benante was unable to perform.
Imagine your plans for the day are:
Spend some time with the cats.
Practise drums.
Have a relatively peaceful afternoon.
Then at 2pm your phone rings.
A few hours later you’re behind the kit with ANTHRAX, supporting IRON MAIDEN and MEGADETH inside a packed stadium.
That was Mike Heller’s Tuesday.
And somehow he pulled it off.
🚨 Charlie Benante Unable To Make The Show
ANTHRAX’s 29 September 2026 performance at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, suddenly ran into trouble when Charlie Benante was unable to appear.
The reason for Benante’s absence has not been publicly disclosed.
That’s important.
While Benante has missed performances at various points in the past, there has been no official explanation given for this particular absence, so there’s absolutely no point filling the gap with speculation.
What we do know is that ANTHRAX suddenly needed a drummer.
Fast.
Really fast.
📞 Then MEGADETH’s Dirk Verbeuren Made A Phone Call
Enter Dirk Verbeuren.
The MEGADETH drummer contacted his friend Mike Heller at around 2pm.
Heller lives in San Antonio, making him geographically convenient.
There’s just one slight complication.
He hadn’t learnt the ANTHRAX songs on drums.
And ANTHRAX were due onstage at approximately 6:30pm.
Four and a half hours.
Excellent.
No pressure whatsoever.
🥁 From The Sofa To ANTHRAX In Four Hours
Heller later described the completely ridiculous chain of events.
He had expected to spend the day at home with his cats and drum pad when Verbeuren suddenly asked whether he was in town and whether he could potentially fill in for Benante that evening.
Heller quickly began charting songs.
Then he raced towards the Alamodome.
Then he hit traffic.
Then he was apparently directed towards the wrong parking location.
Because obviously this story wasn’t stressful enough already.
Eventually he made it inside.
And the clock kept ticking.
📝 He Had To Learn The Set Almost On The Spot
Once Heller reached the venue, he sat down with ANTHRAX for less than an hour.
That would already be a fairly intimidating rehearsal under normal circumstances.
Except this wasn’t a rehearsal.
This was essentially:
“Hello Mike, nice to meet you. Here are the songs. We’re playing shortly.”
He continued charting the material while the band explained how certain songs differ when performed live compared with their studio versions.
That’s another important detail.
Learning an album recording isn’t necessarily enough.
Bands alter arrangements.
Transitions change.
Endings change.
Tempos can feel different.
Sections might be extended.
Cues become essential.
And Heller had to absorb all of that almost immediately.
Then walk onstage.
😳 In Front Of Tens Of Thousands Of People
And this wasn’t some intimate club gig where a mistake might disappear beneath the noise of 300 people.
This was the Alamodome.
Heller estimated the crowd at around 56,000 people.
Even if the exact attendance figure isn’t the important part, the basic situation remains completely absurd:
He woke up without an ANTHRAX gig.
By that evening he was playing ANTHRAX songs inside a massive stadium.
That’s one hell of a Tuesday.
🤘 And He Got Through It
Most importantly?
The show happened.
ANTHRAX took the stage with Heller behind the kit and delivered their set.
Considering how little preparation he had, simply making it from the opening count-in to the final cymbal crash deserves serious respect.
ANTHRAX material isn’t exactly beginner-drumming territory either.
Charlie Benante is one of thrash metal’s most distinctive drummers.
His playing combines speed, precision, groove and extremely recognisable fills.
You’re not casually bluffing your way through that after watching three YouTube tutorials in the car park.
🔥 Charlie Benante Is A Huge Pair Of Shoes To Fill
Benante has been part of ANTHRAX since 1983.
His impact extends considerably beyond drumming.
He has long been a major creative force within the band, contributing heavily to songwriting and helping shape the visual identity surrounding numerous ANTHRAX releases.
Behind the kit, his influence on thrash drumming is enormous.
Those rapid double-kick passages.
The grooves.
The fills.
The ability to make aggressive music swing rather than simply becoming a wall of speed.
Replacing Charlie for one evening would be intimidating with weeks of preparation.
Heller effectively got an afternoon.
🎸 The San Antonio Set Was Packed With Classics
The emergency lineup still had to tackle some extremely familiar ANTHRAX material.
The San Antonio performance included songs such as:
- “Caught In A Mosh”
- “Madhouse”
- “Antisocial”
- “Got The Time”
- “Indians”
alongside their rendition of BLACK SABBATH’s “Hole In The Sky.”
These aren’t songs where half the audience won’t notice if something goes slightly sideways.
ANTHRAX fans know this material.
Very well.
Some have been hearing it live for decades.
Heller had to walk straight into that situation and make it work.
🥁 Mike Heller Is Exactly The Sort Of Drummer You Call
Of course, if you’re going to make a completely unreasonable request of somebody, Mike Heller is a pretty sensible person to ring.
His résumé is formidable.
Heller currently plays with British heavy-metal veterans RAVEN.
He previously spent years with FEAR FACTORY, joining the industrial-metal outfit during the 2010s and bringing serious technical precision to music where the relationship between guitar and drums is absolutely critical.
He has also been involved with extreme-metal outfit MALIGNANCY and other projects.
In other words:
This isn’t some bloke Dirk remembered seeing play Enter Sandman at the pub.
Heller is an extremely accomplished professional drummer.
And on 29 September, every bit of that experience became useful.
⚙️ FEAR FACTORY Experience Probably Didn’t Hurt
Playing FEAR FACTORY material requires mechanical precision.
Those riffs are built around tight rhythmic interaction.
Drums and guitars frequently operate almost like pieces of industrial machinery.
That demands serious technical ability and concentration.
ANTHRAX is stylistically different, but the underlying requirement remains:
You need to be tight.
Especially when there’s virtually no rehearsal.
Heller couldn’t rely on weeks of muscle memory.
He had charts, musical experience and whatever information the band could give him before stage time.
Then instinct had to take over.
🎸 RAVEN Adds Another Completely Different Skill Set
His current work with RAVEN brings another dimension.
The Newcastle-born heavy-metal veterans have spent decades delivering frantic, high-energy performances.
RAVEN’s music comes from a different branch of metal history than FEAR FACTORY, giving Heller experience across very different styles.
Traditional heavy metal.
Speed.
Thrash-adjacent aggression.
Industrial precision.
Extreme metal.
Turns out having a ridiculously broad CV becomes quite useful when somebody suddenly asks:
“Can you play ANTHRAX tonight?”
🤝 Dirk Verbeuren Helped Save The Day
MEGADETH’s Dirk Verbeuren deserves some credit here too.
When ANTHRAX needed help, he knew somebody local who might actually be capable of accepting the challenge.
And apparently Verbeuren wasn’t alone in vouching for Heller.
Chris Jericho also helped put in a good word.
Metal really is a surprisingly small world sometimes.
A drummer can’t make a show.
Another drummer knows a drummer.
A professional wrestler and FOZZY singer gets involved.
A few hours later ANTHRAX are playing.
Perfectly normal industry behaviour.
🖤 Heller Thanked ANTHRAX For Trusting Him
Afterwards, Heller thanked Scott Ian, Frank Bello, Joey Belladonna, Jon Donais and members of the ANTHRAX crew for trusting him with such an enormous responsibility.
And “trust” is exactly the right word.
Because ANTHRAX didn’t have time to spend three days auditioning people.
They needed somebody capable of walking into an extremely difficult situation and behaving like a professional.
Heller delivered.
He later admitted that he still wasn’t entirely sure how the whole thing had happened.
Fair enough.
We’d probably still be processing the phone call.
😂 He Would Quite Like More Notice Next Time
Heller joked afterwards that if there is a next time, he’d quite like more than a few hours to learn everything.
Reasonable request.
He also mentioned that there wasn’t even enough time to properly adjust the drums into his preferred playing position.
That’s another detail non-drummers might overlook.
Drum kits are incredibly personal.
Seat height.
Snare position.
Tom angles.
Cymbal placement.
Pedal settings.
Everything affects how a drummer moves.
Benante’s setup is designed for Benante.
Heller essentially had to climb into somebody else’s cockpit and fly the plane.
🔥 ANTHRAX Were Sharing The Bill With Metal Royalty
The scale of the occasion makes the story even better.
ANTHRAX weren’t playing an isolated headline date.
The San Antonio concert formed part of an enormous bill featuring:
IRON MAIDEN.
MEGADETH.
ANTHRAX.
Three bands with gigantic histories within heavy metal.
Thousands of people filling the Alamodome.
Production operating on stadium scale.
And Heller arrived only hours before the doors opened with homework still to finish.
There are trial-by-fire situations.
Then there’s this.
🥁 Benante Has Required Fill-Ins Before
This isn’t the first time ANTHRAX have needed somebody else behind the kit.
Benante has missed selected performances over the years, including periods connected with his previous battle with carpal tunnel syndrome.
He ultimately underwent surgery for the condition and later spoke positively about his recovery.
More recently, his schedule has also become considerably more complicated because of his involvement with PANTERA, where he has handled drums since the band’s return to live activity.
However, again, no reason has been publicly given for his San Antonio absence.
So the sensible thing is simply to leave it there.
💿 ANTHRAX Are In A Major New Era
The emergency substitution also came during an important period for ANTHRAX.
The band are touring behind their twelfth studio album, Cursum Perficio, released on 18 September 2026.
That means ANTHRAX aren’t merely cruising around playing catalogue material.
They’re operating as an active recording band more than four decades into their career.
Scott Ian.
Charlie Benante.
Frank Bello.
Joey Belladonna.
Jon Donais.
It’s a lineup carrying enormous history while continuing to push forward.
Which makes suddenly losing your drummer immediately before a stadium performance particularly inconvenient.
To put it mildly.
⚡ Professional Musicianship Is Absolutely Ridiculous Sometimes
Stories like this offer a fascinating glimpse into what elite touring musicians can actually do.
Learning songs in your bedroom is one thing.
Learning an entire live set under pressure is another.
Doing it while travelling to the venue is another.
Doing it without a proper rehearsal is another.
Then playing those songs in front of tens of thousands of people alongside musicians you’ve barely had time to rehearse with?
That’s something else entirely.
Years of experience are doing the heavy lifting.
You don’t prepare for a moment like this in four hours.
You prepare for it through decades of playing.
The four hours simply tell you when the exam starts.
🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT
Mike Heller woke up on 29 September 2026 expecting to spend a quiet day at home.
At roughly 2pm, MEGADETH drummer Dirk Verbeuren called.
By approximately 6:30pm, Heller was behind Charlie Benante’s drum kit playing with ANTHRAX at the Alamodome.
He hadn’t previously learnt the band’s drum parts.
He quickly charted two songs.
Battled traffic.
Got sent towards the wrong parking area.
Reached the venue.
Spent less than an hour working through the rest of the material with ANTHRAX.
Then walked onto a stadium stage.
That is absolutely bonkers.
And brilliant.
Whatever prevented Charlie Benante from performing remains private, and there is no reason to speculate.
But ANTHRAX needed somebody capable of rescuing the show at extraordinarily short notice.
Mike Heller answered the phone.
Then he answered the challenge.
Next time, though?
Maybe give the poor bloke until lunchtime.
From cats and a drum pad to ANTHRAX in front of a stadium crowd in four and a half hours. Now THAT is a hell of a gig story. 🥁🔥🤘
