By Order of the Prince of Darkness Himself
๐ค โALL ABOARD!!!โ screams through the speakers. The sky darkens. Bats take flight. A pint of something suspicious fizzes over your boots.
You know what time it is. ๐ฏ๏ธ
Ozzy Osbourne didnโt just leave Black Sabbath and fade into the Brummie fog. He went solo, and for the next four decades, he unleashed a catalogue of albums filled with gothic flair, face-melting riffs, heartfelt ballads, and the occasional WTF moment. From Blizzard to Black Rain, weโve ranked every solo effort so you donโt have to suffer through โLatimerโs Mercyโ again. (Sorry, Ozzy. We still love you.)
๐ฃ 13. Black Rain (2007)
โ๏ธ The Storm That Never Quite Hit
Letโs start with the one thatโs more โwet weekend in Wolverhamptonโ than โstorm of the century.โ Over-produced, under-written, and lacking the usual Ozzy snarl, Black Rain is what happens when you let label execs make too many suggestions. Zakk Wylde does his best, but even his squeals canโt save this one.
๐ง Must-Hear Track: โI Donโt Wanna Stopโ (ironic, innit?)
๐ฅ Riff Report Rating: 3/10 โ โBit of a damp squib, butt.โ
๐ซจ 12. Scream (2010)
๐ More Auto-Tune Than Attitude
Youโd expect something big from an album called Scream, but instead, we got a slightly confused Ozzy wrapped in layers of digital fluff. Gus G replaced Zakk Wylde on guitar, and while the ladโs talented, the chemistry just wasnโt there.
๐ง Must-Hear Track: โLet It Dieโ
๐ฅ Riff Report Rating: 4/10 โ โSounds like Ozzy sang through a microwave.โ
๐ง 11. Ordinary Man (2020)
๐ด The Soft One With Post Malone??
Look, we get it โ the world was ending, Ozzy was dying (again), and he fancied a ballad or six. But teaming up with Elton John and Post Malone wasโฆ unexpected. Some powerful moments here, especially lyrically. Itโs emotional, but not something you blast with the car windows down.
๐ง Must-Hear Track: โUnder the Graveyardโ
๐ฅ Riff Report Rating: 5/10 โ โA tidy farewellโฆ until the next one.โ
๐ง 10. Down to Earth (2001)
๐ The Millennium Middle Child
Itโs not bad. Itโs justโฆ fine. Like a Greggs sausage roll without the brown sauce. The lead single โGets Me Throughโ was solid, but the rest faded faster than a sunburnt goth at Download.
๐ง Must-Hear Track: โGets Me Throughโ
๐ฅ Riff Report Rating: 5.5/10 โ โShouldโve called it Down to Meh.โ
๐งฌ 9. Patient Number 9 (2022)
๐ฅ The Comeback No One Expected
Somehow, Ozzy bounced back from surgeries, Parkinsonโs, and bloody everything else to give us this chaotic, riff-filled record. The guest list is wild โ Clapton, Iommi, even Chad Smith on drums โ and somehow it mostly works. Gothic, surreal, and at times beautiful.
๐ง Must-Hear Track: โImmortalโ ft. Mike McCready
๐ฅ Riff Report Rating: 6.5/10 โ โWe thought he was out. He said โnah mun, not yet.โโ
๐ฏ 8. The Ultimate Sin (1986)
๐งผ The Hair Metal One With Eyeliner & Shoulder Pads
This is glam Ozzy at full power. The productionโs so shiny it could blind a bat, but thereโs no denying those hooks. โShot in the Darkโ still slaps. You might need to comb your fringe just listening to it.
๐ง Must-Hear Track: โShot in the Darkโ
๐ฅ Riff Report Rating: 7/10 โ โShouldโve come with a can of hairspray.โ
๐งจ 7. Ozzmosis (1995)
๐ The Weird Grungey, Proggy One
A slow-burn classic. At first, it feels muddy and moody. But give it time and youโll fall for โPerry Masonโ and โSee You on the Other Side.โ Not every track lands, but thereโs something mysterious in its swampy depths.
๐ง Must-Hear Track: โPerry Masonโ
๐ฅ Riff Report Rating: 7.2/10 โ โGrunge Ozzy is a vibe, who knew?โ
๐บ 6. Bark at the Moon (1983)
๐ The Full-Moon Howler
Jake E. Lee steps up post-Rhoads and brings a sense of drama and danger. The title track is iconic, the synths are spooky, and Ozzyโs voice is razor sharp. Couldโve done with more Jake and fewer keyboards, mind.
๐ง Must-Hear Track: โBark at the Moonโ
๐ฅ Riff Report Rating: 7.5/10 โ โHairy, howly, heavenly.โ
โ๏ธ 5. No Rest for the Wicked (1988)
๐ง The Birth of Zakk Wyldeโs Pinch Harmonics
Zakk enters stage left with more attitude than your nan at bingo night. Raw, riff-driven, and nasty in the best way. โMiracle Manโ goes straight for the jugular, and the whole album feels like a biker bar brawl.
๐ง Must-Hear Track: โMiracle Manโ
๐ฅ Riff Report Rating: 8/10 โ โProper job, Zakk. Proper job.โ
๐ชฆ 4. Diary of a Madman (1981)
๐ง Dark, Dramatic, and Downright Haunting
Randy Rhoads went full wizard mode. This is Ozzyโs gothic masterpiece โ lush arrangements, eerie melodies, and lyrics that drip with madness. โOver the Mountainโ is worth the price of admission alone.
๐ง Must-Hear Track: โFlying High Againโ
(Also: โDiary of a Madmanโ for full spine-tingle)
๐ฅ Riff Report Rating: 9/10 โ โA madmanโs masterpiece.โ
๐ฏ๏ธ 3. No More Tears (1991)
๐ข The Epic One With All the Feels
Anthemic. Melancholic. Iconic. This is Ozzy embracing the 90s with open arms and a bucket of eyeliner. Every song couldโve been a single. Itโs heavy, itโs heartfelt, and itโs home to one of his best ever riffs.
๐ง Must-Hear Track: โNo More Tearsโ
๐ฅ Riff Report Rating: 9.2/10 โ โMassive vibes, butt.โ
โ๏ธ 2. Blizzard of Ozz (1980)
๐ช๏ธ The Legendary Debut
Just months after being kicked from Sabbath, Ozzy links up with Randy Rhoads and drops one of the greatest debut albums in metal history. โCrazy Trainโ alone changed everything. โMr. Crowleyโ summoned something dark. And โSuicide Solutionโ gave Tipper Gore a nosebleed.
๐ง Must-Hear Track: โMr. Crowleyโ
๐ฅ Riff Report Rating: 9.5/10 โ โICONIC. The bat bit back.โ
๐ 1. The Diary + Blizzard Combo: Untouchable Ozzy Era (1980โ1981)
๐ธ Randy Rhoads + Ozzy = Immortality
Alright, butt โ weโre cheating. We canโt split these two. Diary is darker. Blizzard is bigger. Together? Theyโre untouchable. Randyโs playing was next-level. Ozzyโs voice had that golden wail. Sharon was managing. And the 80s were about to become a nightmare dressed in studs.
๐ฅ Riff Report Rating: 10/10 โ โThe peak. The legend. The madness.โ
๐ฏ๏ธ Honourable Mentions:
- ๐ฅ Live & Loud (1993) โ As close as youโll get to seeing Ozzy in full flow, pre-reality TV.
- ๐ง Speak of the Devil (1982) โ Sabbath classics done solo. Shambolic in places, but loads of fun.
- ๐งโโ๏ธ Ozzfest Compilations โ Nostalgia fuel for every 2000s metalhead.
๐ค Final Words from the Prince
Ozzyโs solo catalogue is as chaotic, fascinating, and occasionally unhinged as the man himself. He gave us guitar gods, metal anthems, mushy ballads, and enough eyeliner to flood a Boots.
Whether you love the glam, the grunge, or the gothic, thereโs a version of Ozzy for you.
๐ฆ LONG LIVE THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS. ๐ฆ
Now go spin Crazy Train on loop and howl at the moon with your nan.
