🤘🔥 WHAT DOES IT REALLY TAKE TO TAKE RAMMSTEIN ON TOUR? – TWO GIANT STAGE STRUCTURES, 90 TRUCKS, SEVEN BOEING 747S AND 1,350 TONNES OF INDUSTRIAL METAL MADNESS!
The Riff Report Blog | Behind The Music | Rock & Metal Features
Ever wondered what it takes to send one of the most spectacular metal bands on the planet around the world? Forget a tour bus, a few guitar cases and a roadie with a clipboard. When German industrial metal legends RAMMSTEIN hit the road, they bring multiple stage structures, an army of trucks, enormous cargo aircraft, hundreds of crew members and enough pyrotechnics to make the gates of hell look like a garden barbecue! 🔥
🔥 RAMMSTEIN DON’T JUST GO ON TOUR – THEY MOVE AN ENTIRE INDUSTRIAL CITY!
Picture the scene.
You’re standing in a stadium surrounded by tens of thousands of screaming rock and metal fans.
The lights disappear.
A deep industrial rumble shakes the ground beneath your boots.
Then suddenly…
BOOOOOOM!
Enormous flames erupt into the sky, explosions shake the stadium, and six German musicians emerge from a towering fortress of steel.
The guitars kick in, the drums thunder, and the crowd absolutely loses its mind.
Welcome to RAMMSTEIN!
But what fans experience for a couple of unforgettable hours is only the final result of one of the biggest logistical operations in live music.
Behind the flames, smoke and crushing industrial riffs is an incredible network of engineers, production managers, truck drivers, pyrotechnicians, riggers, lighting specialists and hundreds of other professionals.
And here’s something many fans probably don’t realise.
Rammstein’s stadium production doesn’t rely on just one set of stage structures. The touring operation uses TWO giant structural setups that can move between cities independently.
And when the band needed to transport their colossal equipment from Europe to North America in 2022?
SEVEN BOEING 747 CARGO AIRCRAFT WERE COORDINATED!
Yes, butt. Seven jumbo jets!
Let’s take a closer look at the extraordinary machinery behind one of rock and metal’s greatest live spectacles.

Absolutely bonkers!
🏗️ TWO GIANT STAGE STRUCTURES – THE SECRET BEHIND RAMMSTEIN’S TOURING MACHINE!
This is arguably one of the most fascinating parts of Rammstein’s touring operation.
Most fans assume the band finishes a concert, dismantles the entire stage, loads everything onto trucks and then drives to the next city.
But with a production this enormous, that approach would make the touring schedule almost impossible.
Instead, Rammstein’s 2019 stadium production used two separate sets of steel support structures.
These structures are known within the production industry as black steel.
They’re the enormous frameworks supporting the stage scenery, lighting, video equipment, sound systems and special effects.
And rather than moving together from city to city, the two sets work in rotation.
🔥 How the two-stage system works
STAGE STRUCTURE ONE – THE CURRENT CONCERT
Imagine Rammstein are performing in Cardiff.
Thousands of fans are packed into the Principality Stadium as the band unleash their industrial metal spectacular.
The main stage framework is holding the enormous production equipment while the concert takes place.
The flames are firing, the lights are flashing and the crowd is going absolutely mental.
STAGE STRUCTURE TWO – THE NEXT DESTINATION
Meanwhile, another construction team could already be working hundreds of miles away.
At the next destination, the second enormous steel structure is being assembled.
Cranes are lifting sections into place, riggers are working on the framework and technicians are preparing the infrastructure for the arriving production.
By the time Rammstein finish their previous concert, the next steel framework is already well on its way to being ready.
THE CHANGEOVER
After the concert, the travelling lighting, sound, video, effects and other production equipment is removed from the first structure.
That equipment is loaded into trucks and transported to the next venue.
The crew then installs the travelling production onto the second structure, which is already standing.
Meanwhile, the first steel framework is dismantled and transported ahead to a later destination.
And the cycle continues.
🚛 How many trucks are needed for both structures?
According to an interview with Rammstein’s technical designer Jeremy Lloyd, the 2019 operation required:
- 20 trucks for the first set of steel structures.
- 20 trucks for the second set of steel structures.
- 46 additional trucks transporting the travelling production equipment.
That’s 86 trucks accounted for in the technical breakdown, with broader descriptions of the enormous stadium touring operation commonly putting the total at around 90.
And that’s before considering every other local vehicle, delivery and support service involved in running the concerts.
The important distinction is that these weren’t two complete duplicates of every sound system, lighting fixture and piece of performance equipment.
Rammstein duplicated the huge supporting structures while much of the expensive technical production travelled between them.
It’s an incredibly clever system, especially for a production that takes several days to build.
And if you’re wondering whether this method has a name, it does.
It’s called leapfrogging.
One structure works at the current venue while the other jumps ahead.
Just imagine trying to organise that with a couple of spreadsheets and a dodgy phone signal!
🎹 RAMMSTEIN ALSO HAVE A SMALLER B-STAGE IN THE AUDIENCE!
And here’s another brilliant detail.
The two enormous touring structures aren’t the only stages associated with Rammstein’s spectacular performances.
During their World Stadium Tour, the band also used a smaller secondary performance stage, commonly called the B-stage.
This was positioned away from the main stage, within the audience area.
Fans who attended concerts during the tour may remember a particularly memorable section of the show involving the band’s piano-playing support acts.
During the 2022 tour, French piano duo Abélard performed Rammstein arrangements, including an emotional rendition of Engel with the band.
The musicians joined them on the smaller stage, creating a wonderfully intimate moment in the middle of an otherwise enormous industrial spectacle.
And because this is Rammstein, the band couldn’t simply stroll back to the main stage like normal people.
Oh no!
They used inflatable boats to travel back across the crowd!
So there are actually two different stage arrangements worth understanding:
The touring setup: Two giant sets of structural steelwork that leapfrog between venues.
The performance setup: A colossal main stage and a smaller B-stage within the audience area.
It’s a fantastic example of how much planning goes into even the seemingly simple moments of a Rammstein concert.
✈️ SEVEN BOEING 747 CARGO PLANES – MOVING RAMMSTEIN ACROSS THE ATLANTIC!
Now we come to another extraordinary part of the operation.
The aircraft.
Transporting the production around Europe is challenging enough.
But what happens when Rammstein need to move their huge stadium show across the Atlantic?
You can’t exactly drive ninety trucks from Germany to America.
And your average passenger aircraft isn’t going to accommodate a gigantic industrial stage tower in the overhead lockers!
That’s where specialist international freight companies come in.
For Rammstein’s 2022 European and North American stadium tour, specialist logistics company EFM coordinated the use of seven Boeing 747 cargo aircraft to move production equipment from Germany into the United States and onwards.
Seven enormous cargo aircraft.
Just imagine the scale of that operation!
These jumbo jets were responsible for transporting major elements of the production across international borders.
The equipment included the essential touring systems and stage components needed to recreate the band’s spectacular live show overseas.
🔥 Why use Boeing 747 cargo aircraft?
The Boeing 747 freighter is designed to transport extraordinarily large and heavy commercial cargo.
Its enormous cargo hold, specialist loading arrangements and long-distance capabilities make it particularly suitable for large international freight operations.
For a stadium tour, the advantages are considerable.
Production equipment can travel thousands of miles by air, allowing the tour to operate within carefully planned schedules.
But it isn’t simply a matter of loading the aircraft and shouting, “See you in America!”
Every shipment requires meticulous planning.
Cargo must be weighed, measured and properly secured.
Heavy components must be positioned according to aircraft loading requirements.
International customs paperwork must be completed.
Airport handling arrangements must be coordinated.
And specialist freight teams must ensure the equipment arrives in time for the next concert.
One delayed shipment could create significant problems for the entire production.
🌍 Do Rammstein need seven planes for every concert?
No, and this is an important distinction.
Seven Boeing 747s were coordinated for the major 2022 international freight operation, not for every concert or every movement of the tour.
During European touring, the production primarily travelled by road.
Major intercontinental transfers required a different logistical approach, potentially involving aircraft, ocean freight and land transport.
The exact number of aircraft needed depends on the equipment being shipped, the destination and how the production is divided between transport methods.
Nevertheless, seven jumbo cargo aircraft for a single major touring operation is a staggering figure.
That’s the sort of logistical challenge normally associated with major international industrial projects.
Only this particular project involves guitars, flamethrowers and an audience screaming DU HAST!
🚢 FORTY MASSIVE SHIPPING CONTAINERS – THE SEA FREIGHT OPERATION!
Aircraft weren’t the only way Rammstein moved their gigantic touring production around the world.
After the 2022 international touring operation, EFM also coordinated a major return shipment involving forty 40-foot high-cube ocean freight containers.
These enormous containers were used to return equipment across the Atlantic for European touring activities.
Ocean freight can be particularly useful when equipment doesn’t need to arrive as quickly as air cargo.
But coordinating forty large containers is still a monumental undertaking.
Every container requires a detailed loading plan.
Equipment must be secured to protect it during the voyage.
Customs clearance must be arranged.
Port handling and inland transportation must be organised.
And everything needs to be delivered to the appropriate destination according to the tour’s schedule.
Put simply, Rammstein’s world touring operation has involved road convoys, jumbo cargo aircraft and enormous container ships.
Forget a traditional rock tour.
This is practically an international transport company with a heavy metal band attached!
🚛 THE CONVOY – ALMOST 90 TRUCKS OF PURE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL!
Back on dry land, the trucks form the backbone of Rammstein’s European touring operation.
We’re talking about enormous numbers of specialist vehicles moving tonnes of equipment between cities.
Some transport the steel structures.
Others carry lighting, sound equipment, video systems, stage scenery, instruments and special effects equipment.
And every single vehicle has a job to do.
A carefully designed loading system ensures that equipment arrives at each venue in the correct sequence.
This matters enormously.
You can’t start hanging hundreds of lighting fixtures until the supporting structures are ready.
And you can’t complete sound installation without the appropriate rigging and power systems.
Everything depends on the previous stage of construction being completed.
It’s a huge logistical puzzle involving multiple teams across different locations.
Tour management must consider driving distances, road restrictions, vehicle access, international borders and delivery times.
There are also the drivers themselves.
These professionals are responsible for transporting incredibly valuable equipment safely between venues, often working around extremely demanding touring schedules.
Without them, the greatest stage production on Earth would be nothing more than a pile of expensive equipment sitting in a warehouse.
Respect your road crews, folks. They’re the people keeping the entire rock ‘n’ roll circus moving!
👷 HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE – THE ARMY BEHIND THE FLAMES!
When Rammstein walk onto the stage, there are six band members in the spotlight.
But behind those six musicians are hundreds of people responsible for bringing the production to life.
The 2019 tour’s reported travelling operation involved approximately 265 personnel.
And local staffing can increase the number of people involved substantially.
A 2022 report from the band’s American stadium run described another 260 local workers assisting the production at one venue.
Some concert operations require even more people once stadium security, stewards, catering and additional services are included.
Behind the scenes, the touring team includes stage constructors, engineers, riggers, lighting programmers, video technicians, sound engineers, pyrotechnicians, electricians, instrument technicians, transport coordinators, production managers, catering crews, security specialists and medical personnel.
And that’s only scratching the surface.
These are the people who arrive long before the audience and continue working after the final note has faded.
Some are responsible for engineering the stage.
Others are ensuring the flame effects operate correctly.
Some spend hours checking electrical systems.
Others are making sure everyone has somewhere to sleep and something decent to eat.
It takes a remarkable team effort to make a production like this work.
And the audience will never see most of it.
The band might be the stars, but the touring crew are the absolute unsung heroes.
🏗️ BUILDING A 36-METRE INDUSTRIAL MONSTER!
One of the most recognisable features of Rammstein’s stadium production is the enormous central stage tower.
The structure stands approximately 36 metres high, surrounded by industrial-looking towers, lighting installations and gigantic speaker systems.
The stage spans roughly 60 metres across.
It’s a truly extraordinary piece of concert engineering.
The design draws inspiration from industrial architecture and futuristic machinery, creating the appearance of a gigantic power station.
And it’s not just there to look intimidating.
The structure houses complicated technical systems, including moving platforms, lighting rigs, video screens and specialist effects.
The band’s 2022 production incorporated an enormous moving video screen and systems capable of lifting the performers high above the stage.
All these moving components must be designed, inspected and operated by qualified professionals.
Weather conditions also play a crucial role.
Engineers must consider wind, rain and the forces acting on towering temporary structures.
With so much equipment positioned high above the performers and audience, safety is absolutely essential.
The entire structure must comply with relevant engineering and venue requirements.
And then comes the challenge of actually building it.
⏱️ FOUR DAYS TO BUILD – AND THEN IT ALL COMES DOWN AGAIN!
Constructing the Rammstein stage isn’t something that can be completed during a quick afternoon.
The reported 2019 schedule involved approximately three days to construct the main steel framework, followed by another day installing the production equipment.
That’s around four days of construction.
During this period, specialist crews work through a carefully coordinated series of tasks.
Steel structures are assembled.
Large equipment is lifted into position.
Lighting fixtures are installed.
Speaker arrays are suspended.
Electrical cables are connected.
Video systems are tested.
And the pyrotechnics team begins its own specialist preparation.
After the performance, the production equipment could reportedly be removed and loaded in around four hours, with the structural dismantling taking considerably longer.
Overall, dismantling could require around a day and a half.
Remember, the next concert might be only a few days away.
And that’s why those two sets of stage steelwork are such an important part of the operation.
Without the leapfrogging system, the construction schedule would be a much bigger obstacle.
🔥 586 PYROTECHNIC EFFECTS – WHEN FIRE BECOMES AN INSTRUMENT!
Right, enough talking about trucks and cranes.
Let’s get to the really exciting stuff.
THE FIRE!
Rammstein have spent decades building their reputation as one of the most spectacular live bands on the planet.
Their performances incorporate huge flames, theatrical explosions, fire cannons, showers of sparks and carefully choreographed special effects.
And the World Stadium Tour took that obsession to extraordinary heights.
Reports from the 2022 American stadium dates described 586 pyrotechnic effects during each concert.
Some flames could rise approximately 20 metres.
Imagine standing near the front of the stage as flames explode into the night sky during Sonne.
You don’t just see them.
You feel the heat.
But every effect requires enormous planning.
Pyrotechnicians must calculate safe distances, consider the surrounding structures and ensure the systems operate correctly.
They must also comply with the relevant safety regulations and local requirements.
Fire effects are controlled by specialist equipment and integrated into the show’s carefully programmed sequence.
Rammstein’s spectacular explosions might appear completely chaotic.
In reality, they’re the result of extraordinary precision.
And that precision is what allows the band to deliver such an intense theatrical experience.
⚡ GENERATORS, SOUND SYSTEMS AND ENOUGH ELECTRICITY TO KEEP THE MONSTER ALIVE!
An enormous stage covered in lighting, video equipment and automated machinery requires significant electrical power.
For the 2019 production, technical designer Jeremy Lloyd reported an approximate demand of 1,700 kVA.
The show relied on generators to provide the electrical capacity required.
And that’s before considering all the other infrastructure needed around a major stadium concert.
The electrical systems power enormous amounts of production equipment.
Massive lighting rigs illuminate the stage.
Video screens display carefully produced visual content.
Sound systems deliver crushing industrial metal to tens of thousands of fans.
And automated components move enormous sections of the production.
Every department relies on carefully managed power distribution.
A major technical failure during the concert could interrupt the entire performance.
That’s why highly trained technicians monitor critical systems and work to ensure everything operates reliably.
And then there’s the sound itself.
Rammstein’s music is built around relentless drums, distinctive guitar riffs, industrial electronics and Till Lindemann’s unmistakable vocals.
Reproducing that sound in a stadium requires an enormous professional audio system.
Engineers must account for the venue’s shape, audience positions and acoustic characteristics.
It’s far more complicated than simply turning every amplifier up to eleven.
Although, knowing Rammstein, they’d probably quite like that idea!
💷 HOW MUCH DOES A RAMMSTEIN TOUR ACTUALLY COST?
With two giant structural setups, approximately ninety trucks, seven cargo aircraft involved in an international movement and hundreds of workers, one question naturally springs to mind.
HOW MUCH DOES ALL THIS COST?!
The precise overall production budget hasn’t been publicly established in enough detail to give a reliable total.
However, the scale of the operation points to enormous expenditure.
Consider everything that must be paid for.
The stage design and construction.
Specialist engineering.
Equipment rental and maintenance.
Truck transport.
International freight.
Aircraft charters.
Ocean shipping.
Hotels and staff accommodation.
Tour buses and flights.
Catering.
Pyrotechnics.
Generator fuel.
Insurance.
Permits.
Venue-related production costs.
And the wages of the hundreds of professionals needed to deliver the shows.
Then remember that many of these costs continue throughout the tour.
A production of this magnitude represents a multi-million-pound undertaking with major financial risks.
A cancelled performance, freight problem or major technical issue can be extremely expensive.
And the show must still meet the expectations of thousands of paying fans.
The impressive part isn’t simply spending an enormous amount of money on production.
It’s building a touring system sophisticated enough to make the entire operation commercially and practically possible.
🐉 WHEN RAMMSTEIN BROUGHT THE INFERNO TO CARDIFF!
Of course, we can’t talk about Rammstein’s stadium operation without mentioning their unforgettable visit to Wales.
On Thursday 30 June 2022, Rammstein brought their enormous European Stadium Tour to the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
And what a setting for an industrial metal spectacle!
The Welsh capital welcomed the band’s colossal stage production, thunderous sound system and legendary pyrotechnics.
Fans witnessed the enormous steel towers, theatrical explosions and staggering wall of sound that have made Rammstein one of the world’s most celebrated live metal acts.
And Wales certainly knows how to appreciate a proper rock concert.
From grassroots venues to enormous stadium performances, Cymru has a proud and passionate live music community.
Seeing one of the biggest production operations in rock history arrive in Cardiff was another reminder of the country’s importance as a destination for major international artists.
And somewhere behind all those gigantic flames and towering structures were the hundreds of people who made the concert possible.
Not bad for a Thursday night in Cardiff, butt! 🐉🤘
🎬 WATCH RAMMSTEIN’S OFFICIAL BEHIND-THE-SCENES DOCUMENTARY!
If all these figures sound almost impossible to believe, there’s a brilliant way to see the production for yourself.
In December 2024, Rammstein released their documentary:
RAMMSTEIN – BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE WORLD STADIUM TOUR 2019–2024
The nearly hour-long film explores the incredible work carried out by the crews behind the five-year touring operation.

🤘 THE REAL STARS BEHIND THE STADIUM SPECTACLE!
One of the most fascinating things about Rammstein’s touring operation is that so much of the work goes completely unnoticed by the audience.
Thousands of fans arrive at a stadium, buy their merchandise, grab a drink and prepare for an unforgettable night.
What they don’t see is the enormous amount of preparation that has already taken place.
The stage might have been under construction for four days.
The equipment could have travelled hundreds or even thousands of miles.
The pyrotechnics team will have spent countless hours planning and checking effects.
The sound engineers will have carefully prepared the audio system.
And the production managers will have coordinated hundreds of different tasks just to make sure everything happens on schedule.
Then the lights go down.
The band appear.
And every part of that incredibly complicated operation must come together.
That’s the true magic of live music.
It doesn’t matter whether we’re talking about Rammstein performing to a packed stadium or an unsigned Welsh metal band playing to fifty people in a grassroots venue.
Behind every great concert are people working hard to make the experience possible.
And those people deserve recognition.
