10โ€“11 August 1996. Knebworth Park. Oasis.

There are big gigs.

There are legendary gigs.

And then thereโ€™s Oasis at Knebworth.

Thirty years ago this week, the Gallagher brothers and their bandmates walked onto a stage in Hertfordshire and played to an astonishing 250,000 people across two nights, creating one of the defining moments in British rock history.

A quarter of a million fans.

Two enormous shows.

One band absolutely at the peak of its powers.

And somehow, even three decades later, Knebworth โ€™96 still feels absolutely bloody massive.

๐ŸŒ… BRITPOP HAD TAKEN OVER

To understand just how ridiculous Knebworth was, youโ€™ve got to remember where Oasis were in 1996.

They werenโ€™t simply a successful rock band anymore.

They were everywhere.

Definitely Maybe had kicked the doors off in 1994, and (Whatโ€™s the Story) Morning Glory? had turned Oasis into a genuine cultural phenomenon.

โ€œWonderwallโ€.

โ€œDonโ€™t Look Back in Angerโ€.

โ€œSome Might Sayโ€.

โ€œChampagne Supernovaโ€.

โ€œMorning Gloryโ€.

You could barely turn on the radio, walk into a pub or switch on the telly without hearing Oasis.

Britpop was booming, guitars ruled the charts, bucket hats were apparently acceptable fashion choices and Britain had gone absolutely Oasis-shaped.

Then came Knebworth.

And suddenly everything got even bigger.

๐Ÿคฏ 250,000 PEOPLE

Oasis played Knebworth Park on 10 and 11 August 1996, with a combined crowd of around 250,000 fans attending the two performances.

Just look at photographs from those shows.

People.

More people.

Then some more people.

Then, somewhere beyond the horizon, probably another 40,000 people.

From Liam Gallagherโ€™s position at the microphone, Knebworth must have looked less like a concert audience and more like someone had accidentally evacuated half the country into a field.

The scale remains breathtaking.

The bandโ€™s official history describes the concerts as record-breaking and era-defining, and itโ€™s difficult to argue with that description. (Oasis)

๐ŸŽค โ€œTHIS IS HISTORYโ€

When Liam Gallagher swaggered onto that enormous stage, Oasis werenโ€™t there to politely entertain everyone.

They looked like they owned the place.

Liam behind the microphone.

Noel with the guitar.

Bonehead.

Guigsy.

Alan White.

And stretching away in front of them was one of the biggest audiences British rock had ever seen.

No elaborate theatrical production was required.

No armies of dancers.

No gigantic conceptual storyline.

Just amplifiers, guitars, songs and enough swagger to power Manchester for a fortnight.

It was Oasis doing exactly what Oasis did best.

Standing there like the biggest band on Earth because, for those two nights, they pretty much were.

๐Ÿ”ฅ AND WHAT A SETLISTโ€ฆ

The performances were stacked with songs that have since become absolute British rock standards.

Across the Knebworth recordings youโ€™ll find monsters including:

  • Columbia
  • Acquiesce
  • Supersonic
  • Hello
  • Some Might Say
  • Roll With It
  • Slide Away
  • Morning Glory
  • Round Are Way
  • Cigarettes & Alcohol
  • Whatever
  • Cast No Shadow
  • Wonderwall
  • The Masterplan
  • Donโ€™t Look Back in Anger
  • My Big Mouth
  • Itโ€™s Gettinโ€™ Better (Man!!)
  • Live Forever
  • Champagne Supernova
  • I Am the Walrus

Several recordings from both nights would eventually appear on the official Oasis Knebworth 1996 live release. (Oasis)

Imagine standing in that field hearing โ€œWonderwallโ€ with tens of thousands of voices around you.

Or โ€œLive Foreverโ€.

Or Noel starting โ€œDonโ€™t Look Back in Angerโ€.

Goosebumps, mun. Absolute goosebumps.

๐ŸŽธ OASIS WERENโ€™T ALONE

And because this was the mid-โ€˜90s and apparently everybody had decided moderation was for cowards, Oasis werenโ€™t the only attraction.

The Knebworth weekend featured a massive supporting cast, including The Prodigy, Manic Street Preachers, The Chemical Brothers, Ocean Colour Scene and The Charlatans, among others.

Thatโ€™s not a support bill.

Thatโ€™s practically another festival.

Imagine casually wandering into Knebworth, watching some of the biggest names of the decade and then remembering:

โ€œOh ayeโ€ฆ Oasis are still coming on.โ€

Different times, butt.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง MORE THAN JUST A GIG

What makes Knebworth fascinating 30 years later isnโ€™t simply the attendance figure.

Itโ€™s what those shows represented.

This was British guitar music operating at enormous scale.

Oasis had travelled from Manchester clubs to one of the biggest stages imaginable in only a few years.

Knebworth became the photograph at the end of that journey.

Look how far weโ€™ve come.

For fans who were there, it became one of those gigs permanently welded into their memories.

The journey.

The mates.

The beers.

The endless crowd.

The anticipation.

And then those opening moments when Oasis finally appeared.

You didnโ€™t just attend Knebworth.

You became part of Knebworth.

๐Ÿ“ผ THE LEGEND NEVER REALLY DISAPPEARED

Unlike plenty of huge concerts that gradually fade into rock history, Knebworth continued growing in stature.

Bootlegs circulated.

Stories were passed around.

Photos became iconic.

Footage appeared.

Fans who werenโ€™t even old enough to attend started wishing they had been.

Then, 25 years later, the concerts received another major celebration with the Oasis Knebworth 1996 documentary and live album.

The official live release brought together recordings from both 10 and 11 August and allowed another generation to hear just how enormous Oasis sounded during that weekend. (Oasis)

And now weโ€™ve hit another milestone.

Thirty years.

Bloody hell.

โค๏ธ 30 YEARS LATER โ€” IT STILL FEELS MASSIVE

Plenty has changed since August 1996.

Britpop came and went.

Bands split.

Bands reunited.

Music formats changed.

Festivals became bigger businesses.

Ticket buying somehow became an extreme sport requiring six devices, three browsers, two prayers and a sacrifice to the Ticketmaster gods.

But Knebworth remains.

Those photographs of Liam staring across that seemingly endless sea of people still capture something special.

Youth.

Confidence.

Chaos.

Community.

And the feeling that rock โ€˜nโ€™ roll could still completely take over the country for a weekend.

250,000 fans.

Two nights.

One gigantic moment in British music history.

Thirty years later, Oasis at Knebworth isnโ€™t remembered simply because it was enormous.

Itโ€™s remembered because it captured a band, a generation and an entire musical movement at precisely the right moment.

Before everything changed.

Before the arguments became bigger than the albums.

Before Britpop disappeared.

For one weekend in August 1996, Oasis stood on top of the mountain.

And a quarter of a million people were there to watch them do it.

Live forever?

Yeah.

Knebworth probably will. ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ”ฅ

Were you one of the lucky ones who saw Oasis at Knebworth in 1996? Tell us your memories โ€” because we want to hear the stories from inside that absolutely ridiculous crowd!

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. ๐Ÿ‰๐ŸŽธ
