Ah, Glastonbury. The Shangri-La of sound, the mecca of mud, the spiritual home of cider-soaked singalongs and spontaneous glitter explosions. 🎪✨ Every year, over 200,000 music lovers descend upon Worthy Farm for the greatest festival on Earth, and every year they leave behind enough rubbish to make a landfill weep. But this year? Things got a little gassier.

Enter: The Great Canister Crisis of 2025.

Yup, laughing gas – also known as nitrous oxide, NOS, or that pssssst thing your mate Dave brought in a balloon – has once again become the uninvited headliner of the clean-up scene. And the poor clean-up crews? They’ve had to pick up the pieces, quite literally. Thousands of little silver bullets, scattered across fields like metallic confetti of questionable legality. 🎈😬

So, grab your wellies, your reusable cup, and maybe a pair of tongs – we’re diving deep into Glasto’s post-festival bin-pocalypse, one canister at a time. 🗑️

🚮 The Aftermath: From Pyramid Stage to Rubbish Mountain

When the last notes from Elton, Dua, or Biffy fade into the misty Somerset hills, the real headliners arrive: the clean-up legends. Known as the Green Police, Waste Warriors, and Leave No Trace Angels, they’re the ones who tackle what can only be described as a festival-flavoured apocalypse.

And this year? They faced an unexpected boss level: Nitrous Canisters on Hard Mode.

“It was like walking through a minefield of metal sausages,” said Kelly from the Waste Warrior crew. “Everywhere you looked – in the grass, under the tents, behind food stalls – there they were. Silver bullets of stupidity.”

Let’s talk stats, butt:

  • 🏕️ An estimated 1.5 tonnes of nitrous oxide canisters were collected during post-Glasto clean-up this year.
  • 🎈 That’s over 30,000 individual canisters, many hidden inside piles of rubbish or wedged in the mud.
  • 🧹 Clean-up crews increased their shift time by 20% compared to 2024, just due to laughing gas litter.

Not exactly a laughing matter, is it?

🎤 What Even Is Laughing Gas Anyway?

Nitrous oxide was once the reserve of dentists and Top Gear episodes. But in recent years, it’s become the balloon-based buzz of Britain’s party scene.

How it works:

  • You crack open a tiny canister of NOS.
  • Fill a balloon with the gas.
  • Inhale.
  • Get lightheaded, giggle, and say “OH MY GOD” a few times before forgetting why you came to the bar.

“It gives you this rush of dizziness and laughter,” said Rhys, 22, from Cardiff. “It’s like being drunk and going down a slide at the same time. Until you fall over, spill your pint, and lose your phone.”

The problem? These canisters are single-use, made of metal, and not recyclable through normal waste streams. So they pile up. And up. And up. Especially at festivals, where clean-up crews already have to battle with trench foot, forgotten tents, and suspicious glitter puddles.

🤬 The Clean-Up Crews Speak Out

We caught up with some of the real heroes of Glastonbury – not the artists, not the influencers, not even the guy in the Chewbacca onesie who handed out free hugs – but the clean-up warriors.

“We pulled about 700 of them from just one campsite alone,” said Martin, a veteran Green Police member. “They’re sharp, they roll underfoot, and they don’t belong here. It’s not even safe – we’ve had a few cut gloves open while cleaning.”

“People leave tents, bags, booze, shoes – you name it. But this year was the first time I found an entire duffel bag full of NOS canisters. Like… did they bring a personal stash for the apocalypse?”

Some teams have started calling them “metal turds”, because that’s what they feel like dealing with – litter that doesn’t break down, doesn’t go away, and keeps popping up in the most unexpected places.

And fair play – they’re doing it all with a smile (mostly), a picker claw, and enough patience to make a Buddhist monk look ragey.

🎪 Is It Illegal Though?

Now here’s where things get interesting. Nitrous oxide lives in this weird grey area of UK law.

As of November 2023, possession of nitrous oxide “for recreational use” became a criminal offence under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. It’s now a Class C drug, meaning it’s technically illegal to carry around for giggles.

But enforcement? A bit patchy.

“We saw police doing balloon bins near some of the dance areas,” said one festival-goer. “But mostly, people were just doing it in the campsites, out of sight. And the canisters? Dumped under the nearest bench.”

In short: the law says no, the festival says no, but the party crowd says “What law? Pass the balloon, mate.”

💚 Glastonbury’s Green Mission vs. The Silver Scourge

Glasto isn’t just about music – it’s about sustainability. Their “Love the Farm, Leave No Trace” mantra has been plastered on banners, bins, and backsides for years.

And for the most part? It works. You’ve got refill stations, compost toilets, bamboo toothbrush stalls, and more vegan burgers than a Shoreditch food market. But even the greenest festival can’t stop the balloon brigade.

“We’ve made huge strides in reducing single-use plastics,” said Ella from Glasto’s Green Team. “But NOS canisters are a whole different beast. They’re sneaky, shiny, and too easy to drop.”

There were over 15 “No NOS” signs across the site this year. Announcements were made. Steward patrols stepped up. But the canisters? Still turned up like bad pennies – except heavier and shinier.

💥 The Environmental Cost

This isn’t just about picking up shiny litter. These little devils are a proper environmental headache.

🌍 Metal Waste: Canisters are steel or aluminium, and many aren’t recycled due to contamination or improper disposal.

🌱 Soil Contamination: Some leak or burst under pressure, potentially affecting soil quality in sensitive areas.

🐦 Wildlife Danger: Sharp-edged metal pieces left in the grass can harm animals, especially curious badgers, foxes, and festival pigeons (yes, they exist).

“You’d be amazed what we’ve pulled from the undergrowth,” said Andy, part of the ecology inspection team. “Canisters, vapes, energy drink cans, and once… a tiara. Glasto wildlife deserves better.”

🧠 Why Do People Still Use It?

Simple: it’s cheap, accessible, and delivers a fast high without the faff. You can get 10 canisters online for under a tenner. And while retailers technically now have tighter rules, enforcement varies.

Combine that with:

  • The ‘it’s only a bit of gas’ mindset,
  • Social media glamorisation,
  • Peer pressure in the party fields…

…and you’ve got a silver-strewn situation.

“Everyone else was doing it. I just wanted to try once,” admitted Lauren, 19, from Bristol. “Didn’t think about the mess, to be honest. We just chucked them in a paper cup after.”

🤘 Festival Culture vs. Clean Living

The wider question: can festivals ever truly square hedonism with sustainability?

Music festivals are, by nature, temporary wonderlands of escape. People want to switch off their brains, tune into the bass, and go a bit feral. We love that about them. But as festivals get greener, cleaner, and more eco-conscious, there’s a growing tension between “live free” and “leave no trace.”

NOS is the perfect example. It’s a five-second high that leaves a five-hundred-year waste legacy. The exact opposite of what Glasto stands for.

🛠️ What’s Being Done?

Despite the rising tide of metal minis, Glastonbury isn’t giving up. In fact, the festival is leading the charge:

  • Increased Security Patrols: Targeting canister drop zones, especially in the late-night areas.
  • On-Site Warnings & Seizures: Stewards were issued guidance this year on confiscating large stashes.
  • Canister Collection Points: Some crews trialled “NOS Amnesty Bins” to safely dispose without judgement.

Still, many argue that more needs to be done.

“It’s like whack-a-mole,” one steward told us. “You ban it, you bin it, but the next day, it’s back. It’s relentless.”

There’s even talk of deploying canine units trained to sniff out canister stashes – not your usual police dogs, but festival-friendly pups trained on NOS scents. Imagine the TikToks, mun.

🎯 What Can YOU Do? (Yes, You!)

We get it. Balloons look fun. Canisters go clink in your pocket. But if you love Glasto – like really love it – then think twice before you whip out the NOS.

Here’s how to not be “that guy”:

  • Don’t bring NOS to festivals. It’s illegal. It’s wasteful. It’s just… not tidy.
  • If you see canisters, bin them properly – don’t leave them in the grass.
  • Call out your mates if they’re leaving a mess. Festival karma is real.
  • Support clean-up crews – they’re legends doing the Lord’s work in 30°C heat and knee-deep rubbish.

And if you really must suck on something shiny at 2AM, try a Capri-Sun. Tastes better. Less jail time.

🧹 Final Thoughts: A Ballooning Problem 🎈

The clean-up crews at Glastonbury deserve statues. Or at the very least, free pints for life. This year, they not only tackled the usual apocalypse of ponchos, piss bottles, and forgotten camping chairs – they also battled the rise of the canister plague.

NOS might make you laugh for ten seconds. But for the crews who have to clean up your mess? It’s no joke. It’s dangerous, ugly, and undermines everything Glasto is trying to be – a beacon of conscious fun, not careless chaos.

So c’mon butt – leave the laughing gas at home. Bring the vibes, the tunes, and the glitter. But keep it green, keep it clean, and keep it tidy.

🎤 “Glastonbury is magic. Let’s not pop that balloon.”

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
