Another piece of classic Slipknot history has officially left the building.

After weeks of rumours, speculation and the sort of online detective work that would make the FBI pack up and go home, Slipknot have confirmed that longtime turntablist and keyboardist Sid Wilson is no longer associated with the band.

And if fans were expecting a heartfelt essay looking back over nearly three decades of masks, madness and musical carnageโ€ฆ

Yeah.

That didnโ€™t happen. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Instead, Slipknot delivered an incredibly brief statement confirming the split โ€” bringing Wilsonโ€™s 28-year run with the Iowa metal giants to an abrupt end. (People.com)

๐Ÿšจ Slipknot Finally Confirm Sid Wilsonโ€™s Departure

The announcement arrived on 14 August 2026, following weeks of reports surrounding Wilsonโ€™s position within Slipknot.

The bandโ€™s statement read:

โ€œEffective immediately, Slipknot will no longer be associated with Sid Wilson. We wish him the best in his future endeavours.โ€

And that was pretty much it.

No lengthy explanation.

No retrospective.

No details about what happened behind the scenes.

Just โ€œeffective immediatelyโ€ and away we go.

Considering Wilson had been part of Slipknot since 1998, thatโ€™s one hell of a full stop at the end of a very long chapter. (People.com)

๐Ÿ‘€ And Then Things Got Even Strangerโ€ฆ

Because this is Slipknot, butt.

Nothing can ever be straightforward.

The statement reportedly appeared through Slipknotโ€™s online channels before subsequently being deleted, although the announcement remained visible through Knotfestโ€™s social media presence. (Female First)

So naturally, rather than killing the speculation stone dead, the whole thing poured another industrial-sized barrel of petrol over it.

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Why delete the announcement?

Was it posted prematurely?

Was the wording being reconsidered?

Was there simply some internal confusion?

At the moment, fans have considerably more questions than answers.

๐ŸŽง Sid Wilson: Slipknotโ€™s Resident Lunatic Behind The Decks

Whatever has happened behind closed doors, Wilsonโ€™s contribution to Slipknotโ€™s identity shouldnโ€™t be underestimated.

Joining the band in 1998, before the release of their landmark self-titled debut album the following year, Sid became #0 in Slipknotโ€™s numbered line-up.

And what a character he became.

While Corey Taylor screamed himself inside out and Joey Jordison battered drum kits into submission, Sid brought an entirely different flavour to the chaos.

Turntables.

Samples.

Scratching.

Electronics.

And, particularly during Slipknotโ€™s early years, the apparent belief that gravity was merely a suggestion.

This was a bloke who seemed perfectly happy launching himself from stage equipment, fighting with Shawn โ€œClownโ€ Crahan and generally treating every Slipknot performance like heโ€™d accidentally wandered into a professional wrestling match.

Absolute scenes. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿค˜

But underneath all the madness was an important musical role.

Sidโ€™s scratches, samples and electronic textures became part of the strange sonic cocktail that helped distinguish Slipknot from countless other heavy bands exploding during the late โ€™90s.

Put on tracks from Slipknot, Iowa or Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) and those little electronic details are everywhere.

Sometimes theyโ€™re right in your face.

Sometimes theyโ€™re buried beneath guitars, percussion and screaming.

But theyโ€™re part of the DNA.

๐Ÿ˜ณ Rumours Had Been Flying For Weeks

Wilsonโ€™s departure didnโ€™t arrive completely out of nowhere.

Reports emerged at the end of July claiming that Sid had been removed from the band, although Slipknot themselves initially remained publicly quiet about the situation. (TMZ)

That uncertainty became even more interesting when guitarist Jim Root responded to the reports with a message warning fans not to believe everything they read and to wait for accurate information. (The Business Standard)

Naturally, Maggots everywhere went:

โ€œRIGHT. WHAT THE BLOODY HELL IS GOING ON THEN?โ€

And honestly?

Fair question.

Now Slipknotโ€™s own statement has confirmed the fundamental part of the story:

Sid Wilson is out.

Exactly what led to the split, however, remains far less clear publicly.

Various reports have made claims about circumstances behind the scenes, but without a detailed explanation directly from Wilson or the band, itโ€™s worth separating confirmed information from rumour.

And around Slipknot, rumours spread faster than someone shouting โ€œSPIT IT OUT!โ€ before the jump.

๐Ÿ’” Another Classic Slipknot Member Gone

This departure hits particularly hard because Sid isnโ€™t simply another musician who passed through Slipknot.

He was there for almost the entire ride.

The masks.

The boiler suits.

The explosive rise of the self-titled era.

Iowa.

Festival domination.

Arena tours.

Grammy success.

Line-up upheavals.

Tragedy.

Reinvention.

And generations of Maggots discovering Slipknot for the first time.

Wilson witnessed Slipknot evolve from an absolutely terrifying bunch of maniacs emerging from Iowa into one of the biggest metal bands on Earth.

Thatโ€™s why this feels significant.

๐ŸŽญ Slipknotโ€™s Line-Up Keeps Evolving

For longtime fans, Sidโ€™s departure also becomes another entry in an increasingly substantial list of changes to the Slipknot family.

Founding bassist Paul Gray tragically died in 2010.

Drummer Joey Jordison left the band in 2013 and sadly died in 2021.

Percussionist Chris Fehn departed in 2019.

Sampler and keyboardist Craig Jones left in 2023.

Drummer Jay Weinberg was also dismissed in 2023.

And now Sid Wilson has left after 28 years.

Itโ€™s a staggering amount of change for a band whose original nine-member identity was once such an enormous part of their mythology.

That doesnโ€™t necessarily mean Slipknot are finished โ€” far from it.

This band has survived things that wouldโ€™ve flattened most groups.

But every departure inevitably raises the same question:

How much can Slipknot change while still remaining Slipknot?

Thatโ€™s the debate thatโ€™ll be raging across pubs, festival campsites, Reddit threads and metal Facebook groups for weeks.

Probably accompanied by someone shouting that Iowa was the last proper Slipknot album.

Thereโ€™s always one. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿบ

๐Ÿ”ฅ Sidโ€™s Legacy Is Already Secure

However the relationship between Sid and Slipknot ultimately ended, nearly three decades of history doesnโ€™t disappear overnight.

Wilson helped create some of modern metalโ€™s most recognisable music and contributed to a live spectacle that changed what audiences expected from heavy bands.

He wasnโ€™t simply โ€œthe DJ.โ€

He was #0.

The gas-mask-wearing nutter.

The bloke flying across the stage.

The scratches cutting through the riffs.

One ninth of that terrifying original visual assault that made millions of people look at Slipknot during the late โ€™90s and think:

โ€œWhat the actual hell is THIS?โ€

And then immediately buy the album.

Thatโ€™s a legacy.

๐Ÿค˜ What Happens To Slipknot Now?

Thatโ€™s the massive question.

Slipknot have reinvented themselves repeatedly throughout their career, and theyโ€™ve shown little hesitation in bringing new musicians into the machine when necessary.

Whether Sid will eventually be replaced permanently, whether another musician takes over his duties, or whether Slipknot restructure that element of their live sound remains to be seen.

And then thereโ€™s Sid himself.

After 28 years inside one of metalโ€™s most intense bands, itโ€™ll be fascinating to see what he chooses to do next.

Solo material?

Electronic projects?

Collaborations?

Something completely unexpected?

With Sid Wilson, ruling anything out would probably be foolish.

๐Ÿ–ค End Of An Era For The Maggots

Whatever your opinion on Slipknotโ€™s numerous line-up changes, this one feels different.

Twenty-eight years is a lifetime in music.

Sid Wilson was part of Slipknot before most of the world knew who Slipknot were.

He helped turn nine masked lunatics from Iowa into global metal icons.

And now #0 is gone.

The official statement might have been only a couple of sentencesโ€ฆ

But the history behind it is absolutely enormous.

From those chaotic early club shows to festival headline slots in front of tens of thousands, Sid Wilson has been part of the soundtrack to an entire generation of metal fans.

So hereโ€™s to #0. ๐Ÿค˜

Thanks for the scratches.

Thanks for the stage dives.

Thanks for the absolute bloody chaos.

Whatever comes nextโ€ฆ

Stay (sic), Sid. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿ’ฌ RIFF REPORT QUESTION

What do you make of Sid Wilson leaving Slipknot after 28 years?

Can Slipknot continue evolving despite losing another member of the classic line-up, or does Sidโ€™s departure mark another major turning point for the band?

Get amongst it, Maggots. ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿค˜

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Zero Apologies. ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿค˜

Michael

๐ŸŽธ About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise โ€” it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publicationโ€™s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist โ€” sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
