Filming a sweaty pit with lasers and strobe lights while dodging pints and elbows? You need the right video profile, butt. The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 might be small enough to sneak into a gig inside your sock (we’re not recommending thatโ€ฆ but still), yet it delivers pro-level footage when you know how to wield it.

If youโ€™re new to video profiles, or just wondering which setting wonโ€™t make your gig footage look like it was shot through a potato, this post is your bible. Welcome to the Osmo Pocket 3 Video Profile Breakdown โ€“ Riff Report Style. ๐Ÿค˜

๐Ÿ“น Whatโ€™s a Video Profile, Then?

Basically, a video profile is how your camera โ€œseesโ€ colour, light, and contrast. Think of it like putting a filter on real life โ€” except some profiles give you more editing freedom, while others just make stuff pop instantly.

In Osmo Pocket 3 world, youโ€™ve got three main players:

  • Normal
  • D-Log M
  • HLG

โ€ฆplus a cheeky Black & White mode if youโ€™re feeling artsy like youโ€™re directing a Nirvana documentary.

๐ŸŽจ THE VIDEO PROFILES โ€“ EXPLAINED (WITHOUT THE BORING)

๐Ÿ”ฐ 1. NORMAL (Standard Profile)

  • โœ… Best for: Point-and-shoot party people
  • ๐ŸŒˆ Colour: Rich, vibrant, good olโ€™ reliable
  • ๐Ÿ’ป Post-processing: None needed โ€“ shoot, upload, repeat
  • ๐ŸŽฌ Good for: Insta reels, casual YouTube vlogs, or when you just canโ€™t be arsed to colour grade

Why we love it: No fuss, and your footage looks fire right out of the camera. Great if youโ€™re in a tent at Download and the Wi-Fiโ€™s too tragic to upload 4K RAW to the cloud.

Why we donโ€™t: Limited dynamic range. Bright gig lights = blown-out faces. Shadows = black holes. Not ideal for high-contrast scenes.

Verdict: Proper job for quick content, but don’t expect Hollywood.

๐ŸŽž๏ธ 2. D-LOG M (Flat Profile of Dreams)

  • ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™‚๏ธ Best for: Editing wizards and colour grading gods
  • ๐Ÿ’€ Colour: Flat AF โ€“ looks like itโ€™s been drained of life
  • ๐ŸŽจ Post-processing: 100% essential. Looks rough out the box.
  • ๐Ÿ“ˆ Pros: Maximum dynamic range, 10-bit colour, lots of wiggle room in shadows and highlights
  • ๐ŸŽฅ Good for: Filming dramatic stage lighting, fog machines, and wild lighting changes

Why we love it: Gives you editing POWER. You can rescue blown highlights and beef up dull shadows. Perfect for that dramatic slow-mo guitar solo shot when the strobes go nuts. ๐ŸŽธโšก

Why we donโ€™t: Looks like pants until you grade it. Not ideal for a lazy Sunday edit session with a hangover and no caffeine.

Verdict: If youโ€™re a proper nerd who wants full control, this is the one. But be warned โ€“ it demands post-production, or itโ€™ll look like a 2005 Nokia video.

๐ŸŒ„ 3. HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma)

  • ๐ŸŒŸ Best for: HDR uploads, semi-pro filmmakers, content creators
  • ๐Ÿง  Colour: Bright, clean, and halfway between โ€œNormalโ€ and โ€œD-Log Mโ€
  • ๐Ÿ“บ HDR Ready? Hell yes! Looks lush on HDR screens
  • ๐Ÿ’ผ Post-processing: Optional โ€“ looks good out the box but benefits from light grading

Why we love it: The sweet spot between lazy and pro. You get more dynamic range without the full-on dullness of D-Log M. And if youโ€™re uploading to YouTube, HLGโ€™s HDR support makes your vid POP on modern devices.

Why we donโ€™t: Bit of a middle child syndrome โ€“ doesnโ€™t give the most control OR the fastest workflow.

Verdict: If you’re a content creator who wants pro vibes but doesnโ€™t want to spend all night editing in Premiere, this is your best bet.

โšซ 4. CREATIVE BLACK & WHITE

  • ๐ŸŽž๏ธ Best for: Artsy intros, documentary feels, b-roll, moody shots
  • ๐Ÿ–ค Colour: None. Itโ€™s all dramatic shadows and gritty detail.
  • ๐ŸŽฌ Why use it: Get that behind-the-scenes, ’90s grunge doc vibe. Add grain, reverb, and Kurt Cobain quotes and you’re golden.

Verdict: Pure vibes. Use sparingly but when you do, go full film student mode.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ NERDY SETTINGS YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTELY TWEAK

Regardless of your chosen profile, youโ€™ll want to fiddle with these bad boys:

๐ŸŽ›๏ธ Setting๐Ÿค˜ Recommendation
Resolution4K/60fps for smooth motion โ€“ or 4K/120fps for slow-mo mosh pits
BitrateCrank it to 130Mbps if you’re not scared of big files
SharpnessSet to -1 for a more natural look
Noise ReductionLow โ€“ let post-processing handle that
White BalanceLock it! Gig lights will otherwise mess it all up
Shutter SpeedFollow the 180ยฐ rule: 1/60 for 30fps, 1/125 for 60fps โ€“ for that cinema look ๐ŸŽฅ

๐ŸŽง PROFILE PICKS FOR GIG HEADS

๐ŸŽค Scene๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Use This Profile๐Ÿ“ Why?
Outdoor festival in WalesHLGPunchy colours + sun/cloud mix ๐ŸŒฅ๏ธ
Dark sweaty club in CardiffD-Log MEdit-friendly for wild lighting and shadows ๐Ÿ”ฆ
Insta reels at SteelhouseNormalQuick, easy, and flashy โšก
BTS footage or tour diariesB&WVibes for days ๐ŸŽž๏ธ

๐ŸŽ›๏ธ ND FILTERS โ€“ DO YOU NEED โ€˜EM?

Yup. If youโ€™re filming in daylight and you want that creamy, cinematic motion blur, chuck on an ND filter. Without it, your shutter speed goes sky-high and everything looks jittery. ND8 or ND16 for sunny days, ND32 if the sun’s going full Glasto.

Bonus: They make you look like you know what you’re doing. Instant street cred. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

๐Ÿ’ก Top Tips for Osmo Pocket 3 Gig Shooters

  • ๐ŸŽฅ Manual exposure = consistency. Auto ruins your lighting continuity between shots.
  • ๐Ÿšซ Turn off face tracking during gigs โ€“ itโ€™ll lock onto the bald bloke three rows ahead instead of the singer.
  • ๐Ÿงโ€โ™‚๏ธ Use wide-angle lens attachments if you want more crowd in frame.
  • ๐ŸŽค Stick it on a mini tripod or clip if you wanna grab hands-free shots from the barrier.
  • ๐Ÿ’พ Use fast SD cards โ€“ 4K/120fps = chunky files. Donโ€™t get caught mid-solo with a โ€œcard fullโ€ message!

๐ŸŽธ FINAL VERDICT

The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is a flipping marvel โ€“ tiny, mighty, and with video profiles to suit every type of gig-goer from the casual reel maker to the full-blown tour doc filmmaker. Whether youโ€™re filming your mateโ€™s band in a Ponty pub or capturing epic stage fireworks at Download, choose your profile wisely and your footage will be chefโ€™s kiss.

Diolch for geeking out with us! Now get filmingโ€ฆ and remember to dodge the crowd surfers. ๐Ÿ„โ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ“ธ

โš ๏ธ Disclaimer โ€“ Donโ€™t Get Yeeted Out the Venue ๐Ÿ›‘

Always check with the venue before bringing your DJI Osmo Pocket 3 (or any camera gear) to a gig or festival. Some places have strict no-recording policies, and while the Osmo is small, securityโ€™s fists are not. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

The last thing you want is to be that person getting booted out mid-guitar solo by a big sweaty security guard who smells like Lynx Africa and regret.

Know the rules, film respectfully, and donโ€™t ruin it for everyone else. โœŒ๏ธ

Michael

๐ŸŽธ About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise โ€” it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publicationโ€™s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist โ€” sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
