Are you the mate in the group who turns up to gigs with a camera smaller than a sausage roll but somehow ends up with footage better than the tour DVD? ๐งโโ๏ธ
Well buckle in, you nerdy little cinematographer, because we’re diving deep into DJI Osmo Pocket 3 wizardry to help you capture next-level gig footage that looks like it came straight from a BBC Glastonbury broadcast (minus the 12-hour queue for the loos). ๐ฅโจ
๐๏ธ STEP 1: DIVE INTO PRO MODE OR GTFO
If you’re still using Auto mode at a concert, we need to have words. Activate Pro Mode via the swipe-down menu and let the tweaking commence. Youโre not here to take TikToks โ youโre here to craft digital art with lasers and distortion pedals.
โ๏ธ THE ULTIMATE GIG PROFILE SETUP
๐๏ธ Resolution + Frame Rate:
- 4K / 60fps โ The golden standard. You want silky moshing, smooth crowd waves, and no jitter during those frantic strobe moments.
- 4K / 30fps โ More cinematic, good if your memory card is crying or your footage is destined for moody edits.
๐ Aspect Ratio:
- Stick to 16:9 for YouTube and widescreen glory.
- If you’re chasing TikTok/Instagram clout, go 9:16 vertical โ but remember: no one looks cool headbanging in portrait. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
๐จ LOG PROFILES & COLOUR SETTINGS
๐งช D-Log M:
- The nerdโs choice. Flat as a pancake straight out of the camera but gives you maximum editing flexibility in post.
- Perfect for handling crazy stage lights, fire cannons, and blue laser hellscapes.
๐ Normal Profile:
- For lazy legends and weekend warriors. Gives decent saturation and contrast without faffing in post.
- Great if you’re filming and uploading on the same night while drunk on Red Stripe.
๐ถ๏ธ FILTERS, BABY! โ ND & MIST MAGIC
Welcome to Filter Town, population: you and your overly expensive lens collection.
โ๏ธ ND Filters (Neutral Density):
- These are like sunglasses for your lens.
- ND4 / ND8 for indoor or shaded venues.
- ND16 / ND32 if youโre filming outdoor festivals in bright daylight (Steelhouse, Download, Glasto).
- Keeps your shutter speed under control and avoids that awful blown-out look when someone lights a flare.
๐ซ๏ธ Mist Filters (Diffusion Filters):
- Adds dreamy glow to highlights (think vintage lens softness).
- Use a 1/4 Black Mist to make gig lights bloom beautifully without turning the image into a fog machine disaster.
- Also makes sweaty foreheads less shiny. Proper lush!
๐ค CPL (Circular Polarizers):
- Not ideal for low-light gigs, but can be helpful in daylight for removing reflections off drums or polished guitar bodies.
Pro Nerd Tip: Donโt stack filters unless youโre filming a Tool concert and want to pretend your footage is part of a DMT trip.
๐ง EXPOSURE SETTINGS โ THE TRIFORCE OF MANUAL NERDERY
๐๏ธ ISO:
- Keep it as low as possible for clean footage. Start at ISO 800, max out at 1600 unless itโs darker than your ex’s heart.
๐ฅ Shutter Speed:
- Rule of thumb: 1/Double Your Frame Rate
- 60fps? Shutter = 1/120
- 30fps? Shutter = 1/60
- Any faster, and youโll get the jittery horror-movie look.
๐ก๏ธ White Balance:
- Donโt let auto WB betray you when stage lighting flips from cool blue to satanic red.
- Set manually around 3800โ4200K as a base and adjust for the venue.
๐ AUDIO โ AKA THE BIT EVERYONE FORGETS
๐ง Internal Mics:
- Good in a pinch but they clip like mad if you’re near the PA.
๐ช Solutions:
- Plug in a DJI Mic, Rode Wireless GO, or an external recorder with a dead cat (the fluffy mic cover, not the band).
- Canโt be arsed? Use the footage as b-roll and overlay studio audio or bootleg tracks later.
๐ฆ STORAGE & FORMATS
- Format: H.265 = smaller files, better quality. Computers might cry, but footage is lush.
- Use a U3/V30 microSD card, 128GB minimum. Donโt cheap out โ youโll lose a riff.
๐ท COMPOSITION FOR MAXIMUM ROCKNESS
- Low angles make guitarists look like gods.
- Ultrawide adapter = full band and stage in one frame.
- Use face tracking if youโre filming your mateโs band โ let it auto-follow the frontman while you nurse a pint.
Bonus: whip out Motionlapse pre-gig as the crowd fills in โ slap it in your edit for big drama and festival vibes.
๐ฌ SAVE YOUR GIG PRESET
Once youโve perfected this Frankenstein of glorious geek settings:
- Tap the Star Icon in Pro Mode.
- Save as a custom profile: call it โGig Mode ๐คโ or โMoshCam v1.0โ.
- Boom โ one-tap pro footage for the rest of time.
๐งโโ๏ธ NERDY FINAL TIPS
- Donโt zoom digitally โ just walk closer (or blag your way into the pit).
- Bring a power bank โ Osmo Pocket 3 gets thirsty after 45 mins at 4K.
- Always wipe your lens โ especially if youโre at a beer-fuelled punk gig with airborne Carling.
- Stabilise like a pro โ hold with two hands or mount on a mini tripod if allowed.
- If youโre editing later, film flat, expose right, colour grade tight. ๐ป๐๏ธ
๐ค WRAPPING UP (WITHOUT A BALLAD)
There you have it, video nerds! Whether youโre capturing sweaty club chaos, sprawling festival fields, or just your mateโs dodgy Oasis tribute band at the pub, these settings will have your DJI Osmo Pocket 3 turning heads and spitting pixel fire.
