“Tidy night incoming, butt!”
Grab your bucket hats, dust off your Britpop swagger, and prepare those vocal cords — because Richard Ashcroft is marching into Cardiff Castle on 16 July, and it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest “I WAS THERE MUN!” gigs of the summer. 🤘✨
This isn’t just a concert. This is the poet-laureate of indie rock stepping onto one of the most magical stages in the UK — a venue where history, stone walls and 5,000 pints of Welsh enthusiasm collide in spectacular fashion.
Let’s get into it… proper Riff Report style.
🔥😈🍻
🎤 WHO IS RICHARD ASHCROFT? (AS IF YOU DIDN’T ALREADY KNOW, BUT LET’S HYPE IT UP)
Richard. Bloody. Ashcroft.
The voice. The attitude. The man who walked down a London street in one continuous shot and accidentally created one of the most iconic music videos in history.
Frontman of The Verve, architect of anthems, spiritual rock shaman, occasional chaos merchant, and one of Britain’s greatest ever songwriters.
He’s not just a musician — he’s the soundtrack to heartbreaks, comebacks, late-night taxi singalongs, and the entire Britpop era whether he asked for it or not. A legend, no messing.
🏰 WHY CARDIFF CASTLE IS THE PERFECT ASHCROFT ARENA
Cardiff Castle isn’t a venue — it’s a rite of passage.
A Welsh stronghold turned open-air cathedral of noise. Over the years we’ve had:
- The Killers setting the courtyard on fire
- Manic Street Preachers turning it into a national pride rally
- Gerry Cinnamon yelling over the dragons
- 50 Cent turning the place into a hip-hop fortress
And now?
Sir Ashcroft of Wigan arrives to make the walls shake harder than the Prince of Wales on match day.
Few venues can create the kind of magic Cardiff Castle does. The sunsets, the battlements, the reverb bouncing off the stone, the smell of chips floating from the city centre… lush, mun. ✨
🎶 WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE SETLIST
Ashcroft gigs are pure anthem fuel, and Cardiff is going to get the full treatment.
🔥 The Verve Classics (bring tissues and a lighter):
- Bitter Sweet Symphony (the national anthem of late 90s heartbreak)
- Lucky Man
- Sonnet
- The Drugs Don’t Work (prepare for 5,000 grown men emotionally wobbling)
- Space and Time
🔥 Solo bangers we BETTER get:
- A Song for the Lovers
- Break the Night With Colour
- Music Is Power
🔥 Deep cuts he sometimes pulls out:
- Check the Meaning
- Science of Silence
Cardiff fans ALWAYS sing louder than the PA. Even Ashcroft won’t drown out a courtyard full of Welsh bellows screaming “I’M A LUCKY MAN!” 🐉
🍻 THE CARDIFF CASTLE GIG VIBE CHECK
Let’s be honest — gigs at the castle hit different.
✔ Pint queues longer than a Slipknot intro
✔ Everyone dressed like they time-travelled from 1998
✔ Random bloke next to you screaming “BRITPOOOOOP!”
✔ The atmosphere somehow both peaceful and absolutely feral
✔ That moment the lights hit the stone walls… goosebumps, mun
This will be a summer-evening, arms-around-your-mates, nostalgia-soaked, spiritual little gig.
The type you talk about for years.
💷 TICKETS — AKA THE GREAT SCRAMBLE
Ashcroft doesn’t do a million shows a year, so when he announces one — especially at a venue THIS iconic — tickets go faster than your pint on a hot day.
You know the drill:
- Pre-sale = gone
- General sale = chaos
- People in the queue shouting “WHY AM I NUMBER 7,000?!”
- Facebook Marketplace suddenly full of “unwanted due to double booking 😇”
- Your mate swears he knew “a guy who works security” (he does not)
Stay sharp. Stay logged in. Stay caffeinated. ☕🔥
📍 WHY THIS GIG MATTERS
Richard Ashcroft at Cardiff Castle is more than nostalgia.
It’s a celebration of British songwriting royalty.
A reminder of the era when indie ruled the charts and absolutely everyone had a battered Verve CD in their car.
It’s also a tip of the hat from Cardiff — a city that LOVES a big outdoor gig — to one of the most influential frontmen of the last three decades.
And let’s be real…
Hearing Bitter Sweet Symphony echo across the castle courtyard?
That’s bucket-list stuff. 👑
🤘 THE VERDICT (SCREAMED IN A GLASWEGIAN ACCENT)
“THIS IS GONNAE BE ABSOLUTE LIMBS, MUN!”
A legendary artist.
An iconic venue.
A crowd ready to sing their lungs out.
A summer night in the finest capital on earth.
It’s going to be tidy.
Proper tidy.
The kind of tidy that makes you text everyone you know:
“WE’RE GOING CARDIFF CASTLE BUTT!”
