Peace, Love, Mud & Absolutely Monumental Riffs 🤘🌼🔥
There are music festivals… and then there’s Woodstock.
Held from 15–18 August 1969 on Max Yasgur’s dairy farm near Bethel, New York, the Woodstock Music & Art Fair became far more than another weekend of bands playing in a field. More than half a million people descended on the site for four chaotic days of music, rain, mud, traffic jams, questionable decisions and enough tie-dye to permanently alter the course of fashion.
The festival featured 32 acts, including Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Janis Joplin, Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and the Grateful Dead.
Some performances were brilliant.
Some were messy.
Some became moments that would define rock history forever.

10. 🎤 JANIS JOPLIN
By the time Janis Joplin arrived at Woodstock, she was already one of the most recognisable voices of the counterculture.
And what a voice.
Raw, bruised, soulful and capable of sounding like she’d swallowed an entire blues club, Joplin brought a wonderfully ragged intensity to the Woodstock stage.
Her set included tracks such as “Piece of My Heart”, “Ball and Chain” and “Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)”, delivering the kind of emotional vocal performance that few singers before or since have been able to replicate.
Was it necessarily Joplin’s greatest-ever performance?
Probably not.
But Woodstock without Janis simply wouldn’t feel like Woodstock.
Her presence alone represents everything we remember about that period — freedom, rebellion, blues, psychedelia and musicians performing like tomorrow wasn’t guaranteed.
Sadly, Joplin would die just over a year later in October 1970, making the footage of her Woodstock appearance even more poignant today.

🎤 Piece of My Heart
9. ✈️ JEFFERSON AIRPLANE
Imagine waiting all night for a band to come on.
Then imagine them finally appearing at approximately 8am on Sunday morning.
Festival scheduling, 1969 edition. 😂
Jefferson Airplane vocalist Grace Slick introduced their performance as “morning maniac music”, which is about as perfect a description of an early-morning festival set as you’re ever going to get.
The San Francisco psychedelic legends delivered a sprawling set featuring classics including “Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit.”
Grace Slick’s enormous voice floating across a battered festival site as thousands of exhausted hippies attempted to work out what day it was remains one of Woodstock’s defining images.
There was something beautifully strange about it.
No LED screens.
No gigantic pyro towers.
No synchronised wristbands.
Just a psychedelic rock band blasting across farmland while the sun came up.
Proper festival magic.

🐇 White Rabbit
8. 🎸 CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL
Here’s one of the great Woodstock injustices.
Creedence Clearwater Revival absolutely smashed it.
Yet their performance became somewhat overlooked because the band were omitted from the original Woodstock film and soundtrack after John Fogerty was reportedly unhappy with the performance.
Which seems mental when you listen back today.
CCR arrived as one of the hottest bands in America and powered through a late-night set loaded with songs including “Born on the Bayou,” “Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising” and “I Put a Spell on You.”
The problem?
They followed the Grateful Dead after delays had pushed everything ridiculously late.
By the time Creedence played, much of the enormous audience was asleep.
Imagine standing onstage at one of the biggest festivals in human history…
…and half the field is having a kip.
Brutal. 😂
Thankfully, history has been much kinder to their performance.

🌙 Bad Moon Rising
7. 🎶 CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG
There’s nervous…
…and then there’s performing one of your first major gigs in front of hundreds of thousands of people.
No pressure, lads.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young took to the Woodstock stage in the early hours of Monday morning and delivered one of the festival’s most beautifully human performances.
Stephen Stills famously admitted to the audience that they were scared.
Understandable.
Most bands get nervous playing their first gigs in front of 40 people and someone’s dog.
CSNY had Woodstock.
Their gorgeous harmonies offered something completely different from the heavier blues and psychedelic chaos surrounding them.
Songs including “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” and “Wooden Ships” helped establish them as one of the defining groups of their generation.
Sometimes you don’t need explosions.
Sometimes four musicians harmonising underneath the night sky will do nicely.

6. 🎸 TEN YEARS AFTER – “I’M GOING HOME”
Right.
NOW we’re getting properly sweaty.
Ten Years After guitarist Alvin Lee walked onto that stage and basically decided:
“Right then. Let’s see how fast this guitar can go.”
What followed was one of Woodstock’s great displays of six-string lunacy.
Their performance of “I’m Going Home” became legendary after appearing in the Woodstock film.
Lee tears through rock ‘n’ roll, blues and lightning-fast guitar runs while the band desperately keeps the whole thing attached to the rails.
It’s frantic.
It’s sweaty.
It’s completely ridiculous.
And it’s glorious.
For countless young guitarists watching the Woodstock movie afterwards, Alvin Lee instantly became a guitar hero.
This wasn’t peace and love.
This was peace, love and ABSOLUTELY SHREDDING YOUR GUITAR TO BITS.

⚡ I’m Going Home
5. 🌈 SLY & THE FAMILY STONE
At roughly 3:30 in the morning, Woodstock suddenly became the funkiest place on planet Earth.
Sly & The Family Stone hit the stage and delivered a set overflowing with soul, funk, rock and pure electricity.
The band tore through songs including:
“Everyday People”
“Dance to the Music”
“I Want to Take You Higher”
“Stand!”
And that audience participation during “I Want to Take You Higher”?
Absolutely enormous.
Sly Stone had hundreds of thousands of exhausted festival-goers responding to his calls in the middle of the night.
That’s not merely performing.
That’s controlling a crowd.
The band’s fusion of Black and white musicians, men and women, rock and funk also represented much of Woodstock’s idealistic message about breaking down barriers.
Musically, though?
They simply battered the place.

🔥 I Want to Take You Higher
4. 🎤 RICHIE HAVENS – “FREEDOM”
Woodstock needed somebody to start the festival.
Richie Havens wasn’t originally supposed to open it.
But traffic around the festival had become so catastrophically bad that other musicians simply couldn’t reach the site.
So organisers looked at Havens and essentially said:
“You’re up, butt.”
Well… probably not exactly like that.
But we’re Welsh. Allow us this one. 😂
Havens walked onto the stage at around 5pm on Friday 15 August and found himself opening one of the most important festivals in music history.
He kept playing.
And playing.
And playing.
Eventually, having exhausted much of the material he’d prepared, Havens improvised around the spiritual “Motherless Child.”
One word kept coming to him.
Freedom.
The resulting performance became one of Woodstock’s defining moments.
Just one man, an acoustic guitar, an enormous crowd and a word that perfectly captured the spirit of the weekend.
Sometimes music history doesn’t need planning.
Sometimes it simply happens.

🥉 3. JOE COCKER – “WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS”
The Beatles wrote it.
Joe Cocker grabbed it by the scruff of the neck, covered it in sweat, screamed at it and turned it into something completely his own.

Cocker’s Woodstock performance of “With a Little Help From My Friends” is one of the greatest cover versions ever captured on film.
His movements are completely unique.
His voice sounds enormous.
His arms appear to be conducting an invisible orchestra that only Joe Cocker can see.
And the song just keeps building.
And building.
And BUILDING.
Until Cocker is practically screaming his soul across the entire festival.
It’s one of those rare performances where you temporarily forget the original song even exists.
That’s how you do a cover.
You don’t simply reproduce it.
You OWN IT.

🎤 With a Little Help From My Friends
🥈 2. SANTANA – “SOUL SACRIFICE”
This performance changed everything for Santana.
At the time, Santana were still relatively unknown outside San Francisco, and their debut album hadn’t even been released when they walked onto the Woodstock stage on Saturday 16 August.
Then they played “Soul Sacrifice.”
And bloody hell.
🔥🔥🔥
Carlos Santana’s guitar.
The Latin percussion.
The groove.
The energy.
And then there’s drummer Michael Shrieve.
He was just 20 years old, sitting behind his kit in front of an ocean of people and producing one of the most famous drum performances of the entire festival.
His solo is phenomenal.
Santana’s entire performance feels dangerous because the music seems permanently on the verge of exploding.
It’s psychedelic rock.
It’s Latin music.
It’s blues.
It’s jazz.
It’s percussion madness.
And somehow all of it works.
The Woodstock film later introduced millions more people to Santana.
A band arrived relatively unknown.
They left as legends.
That’s how you announce yourself, mun.

🥁 Soul Sacrifice
🥇 1. JIMI HENDRIX – “THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER”
Could it really be anything else?
By Monday morning, Woodstock looked like the aftermath of some enormous hippie apocalypse.
The field was destroyed.
Rubbish was everywhere.
Hundreds of thousands had already gone home.
The festival had massively overrun.
And at around 9am on Monday 18 August, Jimi Hendrix finally walked onto the stage.
The enormous crowd had reportedly dwindled to tens of thousands.
But what happened next would become arguably the single most famous moment in Woodstock history.
During a marathon set with his expanded Gypsy Sun & Rainbows ensemble, Hendrix launched into “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
But this wasn’t simply America’s national anthem.
Hendrix transformed his Stratocaster into something else entirely.
Feedback screamed.
Notes bent and collapsed.
His guitar appeared to mimic sirens, explosions and the sounds of warfare.
Against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, many listeners interpreted the performance as a musical commentary on America itself.
Hendrix didn’t need a speech.
He let the guitar speak.
More than five decades later, those few minutes remain instantly recognisable.
It’s rebellious.
It’s uncomfortable.
It’s beautiful.
It’s chaotic.
It’s Hendrix.
And it’s Woodstock.

Trying to choose just ten performances from Woodstock is basically asking us to start an argument in the pub.
So we need to chuck some love towards a few more.
🎸 The Who
Performing much of Tommy in the early hours, The Who brought a much harder rock edge to Woodstock. “See Me, Feel Me” arriving as dawn broke became another iconic festival moment.
🎤 Joan Baez
Pregnant and performing late on Friday night, Baez brought folk music and political consciousness together beautifully.
🎸 Johnny Winter
One of the weekend’s great blues-rock performances and sometimes criminally overlooked when Woodstock gets discussed.
🎶 The Band
Imagine hearing “The Weight” drifting across Woodstock.
Yep.
Lush.
🐟 Country Joe McDonald
That legendary crowd chant followed by “I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die Rag” became another unforgettable example of Woodstock’s anti-war atmosphere.
🤘 WOODSTOCK WASN’T PERFECT — THAT’S WHY IT MATTERED
It’s easy to romanticise Woodstock.
Looking back through grainy photographs, it can appear like some mythical utopia where half a million beautiful people peacefully sat around listening to Jimi Hendrix while somebody handed out free sandwiches.
Reality was considerably messier.
There were enormous traffic problems.
There wasn’t enough infrastructure.
There was mud everywhere.
The weather caused havoc.
Artists played hours later than scheduled.
Equipment struggled.
People were exhausted.
Yet somehow…
it worked.
More importantly, the music survived.
The performances captured across those four days became cultural artefacts.
Santana became stars.
Joe Cocker delivered the performance of his life.
Richie Havens improvised history.
Sly & The Family Stone turned the middle of the night into a gigantic funk party.
The Who brought Tommy to the masses.
And Jimi Hendrix stood on a battered stage on Monday morning and produced a piece of guitar playing people are still discussing generations later.
That is the real legacy of Woodstock.
Not simply peace signs.
Not simply hippies.
Not simply mud.
The music.
Four days.
32 acts.
Hundreds of thousands of people.
And enough legendary moments to keep rock fans arguing forever.
