Back in 2012, Steelhouse was still the new kid on the festival block โ€” smaller in size, but absolutely massive in spirit. Fans came for the music, but stayed for the camaraderie, the scenery, and the sense that they were helping to build something truly unique.

The weather, true to Welsh tradition, was unpredictable. But the line-up? Rock solid. It was a blistering cocktail of NWOBHM veterans, classic rock royalty, and newer acts already making waves.

Steelhouse 2012 may not have had the bells and pyro of the big festivalsโ€ฆ but it had soul, riffs, and a crowd that gave everything. Letโ€™s break it down, band by glorious band. ๐ŸŽถ

๐ŸŽธ SATURDAY โ€“ Storms, Shredders and Stage-Stompers

Fahran ๐Ÿ”ฅ

This up-and-coming British band opened the day with a surge of melodic power and youthful fire. With powerful vocals and a knack for anthemic choruses, Fahran were determined to make the most of their mountain slot โ€“ and they absolutely did.

Their set blended modern hard rock with classic sensibilities. Cased in Steel and Ashes had the early crowd nodding and headbanging along. A tight, confident performance from a band that clearly meant business.

Heavenโ€™s Basement ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Already well on the road to stardom, Heavenโ€™s Basement came to burn the hill down, and thatโ€™s exactly what they did. It was all bare-chested chaos, stage dives, and stadium-sized energy, delivered with DIY grit and unrelenting power.

Tracks like Executioner’s Day and Canโ€™t Let Go hit with ferocity. The band were clearly on the edge of something big, and their Steelhouse set was a riotous, unforgettable moment. Loud, proud, and positively dangerous.

Gun ๐Ÿ”ซ

Scottish rockers Gun delivered a crowd-pleasing, hit-filled performance full of swagger, big choruses, and tight musicianship. Better Days, Steal Your Fire, and their funked-up cover of Word Up had the crowd bouncing despite the mud.

The band looked relaxed but razor-sharp, and the set was a polished showcase of melodic hard rock excellence. Gun may have been veterans by this point, but they played with the energy of a band just getting started.

Black Spiders ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ

If Black Spiders had shown up just to cause havoc โ€” mission accomplished. This Sheffield-based beast of a band kicked out a filthy, riff-heavy set full of swagger, sweat, and sneering humour.

KISS Tried to Kill Me, Stay Down, and Just Like a Woman turned the pit into a mud-slick mosh zone. Their energy was relentless, their banter brilliant, and their sound? Like Motรถrhead after five pints and a bar fight. One of the most feral sets of the weekend.

Reckless Love (Headliner) ๐ŸŽธ๐Ÿ’„

Closing Saturday night with a blast of Finnish glam-metal energy, Reckless Love brought spandex, sparkle, and some serious singalongs. It was all neon, hair, and outrageous guitar solos โ€“ and the crowd absolutely lapped it up.

Frontman Olli Herman worked the stage like a born showman, with tracks like Hot, Romance, and Beautiful Bomb turning Steelhouse into a sunset-drenched glam rock disco (even if it was raining). Cheesy? Maybe. Fun? Absolutely wild.

It was a bold choice for a headliner โ€“ and one that paid off with grins, glitter, and crowd chants long after they left the stage.

๐ŸŽถ SUNDAY โ€“ The Mountain Belongs to the Rockers

Trucker Diablo ๐Ÿšš๐Ÿ”ฅ

Bringing Irish muscle to the stage, Trucker Diablo kicked off Sunday with riffs as big as their name. Their Southern-tinged hard rock was heavy, melodic, and soaked in beer-swigging anthems.

Songs like Drink Beer, Destroy and Big Truck were absolute festival gold, and the bandโ€™s down-to-earth charm made them instant crowd favourites. Their set felt like a barn party in the rain โ€“ sweaty, loud, and full of camaraderie.

The Treatment ๐Ÿ’‰

Young, sharp and full of potential, The Treatment hit the Steelhouse stage with skinny jeans, snarls, and hooks for days. Their blend of old-school AC/DC boogie and modern hard rock shine made for a perfect mid-afternoon fist-pumper.

Shake the Mountain and Nothing to Lose but Our Minds showed off their knack for tight songwriting and big, bold choruses. One of the most promising young bands of the weekend โ€“ and they didnโ€™t waste the spotlight.

Skin ๐ŸŽค

Nev MacDonald and co returned home to the Welsh hills with a hugely emotional, crowd-hugging set. Steelhouse 2012 was part of Skinโ€™s farewell run, and the energy was thick with appreciation and nostalgia.

Shine Your Light, Tower of Strength, and Look But Donโ€™t Touch brought massive singalongs, heartfelt speeches, and even a few tears. Nevโ€™s voice was as rich as ever, and the band played like they were soaking in every last drop. An unforgettable moment for Welsh rock fans.

Asia (Headliner) ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŽน

One of the most musically gifted acts ever to headline Steelhouse, Asia closed the festival with a set that blended technical brilliance, AOR gold, and emotional grandeur.

Only Time Will Tell, Donโ€™t Cry, and of course, Heat of the Moment, were delivered with precision and passion by a band of total pros. John Wetton (RIP) was in magnificent form, his voice resonating with warmth and strength, while Geoff Downesโ€™ keys wrapped the audience in lush melody.

There was something transcendent about Asiaโ€™s set โ€“ a perfect blend of class and connection, reminding everyone that Steelhouse wasnโ€™t just about loudness โ€“ it was about love for the music.

๐Ÿ Final Thoughts โ€“ Steelhouse 2012: Grit, Growth, and Glorious Noise

Steelhouse 2012 proved beyond doubt that the mountain had something truly special.

๐ŸŽธ Bigger bands.
โšก Bigger crowds.
๐ŸŒง๏ธ And a community that didnโ€™t care about the weather โ€“ only the riffs.

From Reckless Loveโ€™s glam party to Asiaโ€™s emotional grandeur, and from the new blood of Heavenโ€™s Basement to the swan song of Skin, 2012 gave Steelhouse its voice โ€“ and the rock world began to take notice.

Steelhouse 2012 โ€“ forged in the fog, built on belief, and louder than ever.

Cโ€™mon Wales! Iechyd da! ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿป

Michael

Michael

๐ŸŽธ About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise โ€” it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publicationโ€™s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist โ€” sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
