Iron Maiden are one of the greatest heavy metal bands ever to walk onto a stage, unleash a galloping bassline and release a twelve-foot Eddie into the general population.

That much is obvious.

But underneath the twin-guitar harmonies, enormous choruses, historical battles and Bruce Dickinson operating at roughly the same altitude as a fighter jet, there has always been something else bubbling away inside Maiden.

Prog.

Lots and lots of glorious, unapologetic prog.

Because while Iron Maiden helped define the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, bassist, founder and chief songwriting architect Steve Harris has never been afraid of letting a song wander off into the wilderness for ten minutes before eventually remembering where the chorus lives.

And thank Eddie for that.

Harris grew up listening to progressive and hard rock bands including Genesis, Jethro Tull, Wishbone Ash and UFO, and that influence has repeatedly surfaced throughout Maiden’s career.

The philosophy behind prog suited him perfectly: there don’t have to be rules.

Songs can be long.

They can change tempo.

They can tell enormous stories.

They can contain instrumental sections that appear to have their own instrumental sections.

And if somebody asks whether the track really needs to be thirteen minutes long?

The answer is apparently:

YES. NOW ADD ANOTHER GUITAR SOLO.

So grab your headphones, cancel anything you’ve got planned for the next couple of hours and prepare to disappear down one of heavy metal’s greatest rabbit holes.

Here are 10 times Iron Maiden went gloriously, shamelessly and magnificently prog.

🔥 10. PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

Iron Maiden — 1980

We might as well start right at the beginning.

Before Bruce Dickinson.

Before Number of the Beast.

Before stadiums around the planet were screaming “SCREAM FOR ME!”

There was Phantom of the Opera.

Appearing on Maiden’s self-titled 1980 debut, the Steve Harris composition immediately demonstrated that this wasn’t simply another band hammering out three-minute punk-influenced metal songs.

This thing had ambition.

Clocking in at over seven minutes, Phantom shifts through different sections, tempos and moods while allowing the musicians to stretch their legs considerably.

You’ve got harmonised guitars.

You’ve got dramatic changes.

You’ve got lengthy instrumental passages.

You’ve got Steve Harris galloping around underneath everything like somebody has accidentally left the stable door open.

🐎💨

The remarkable thing is how early this happened.

Iron Maiden hadn’t gradually become progressive after years of success.

The prog DNA was already there.

Phantom of the Opera essentially planted a massive flag in the ground saying:

Maiden songs can go wherever Maiden songs bloody well want.

More than four decades later, they’re still following that philosophy.

⚓ 9. RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER

Powerslave — 1984

Right.

Now we’re getting ridiculous.

And we mean that as the highest possible compliment.

Inspired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s famous poem, Rime of the Ancient Mariner closes 1984’s Powerslave with nearly fourteen minutes of maritime heavy metal storytelling.

Fourteen minutes!

Some punk bands could release an EP in that time.

Maiden decided to adapt nineteenth-century poetry instead.

Of course they did.

The track contains everything you could possibly want from epic Maiden: massive riffs, changing tempos, atmospheric passages, narration, dramatic instrumental sections and enough musical twists to make you wonder whether you’ve accidentally wandered onto another album halfway through.

Then comes that eerie middle section.

Everything slows.

The atmosphere becomes unsettling.

You can practically hear the ship creaking beneath you.

And then…

BANG.

Maiden explode back into life.

It’s theatrical.

It’s ambitious.

It’s completely excessive.

It’s bloody magnificent.

If anyone ever asks where the progressive side of Iron Maiden lives, point them directly towards Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Then come back fourteen minutes later.

🔮 8. SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son — 1988

If Maiden had occasionally flirted with progressive rock before 1988, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son was where they invited prog inside, gave it a cuppa and told it to make itself comfortable.

The entire album was constructed around a concept involving prophecy, supernatural abilities, good, evil and the mystical powers of the seventh son of a seventh son.

Very metal.

Very prog.

Very Steve Harris.

The title track stretches beyond nine minutes and feels more like a miniature musical journey than a conventional heavy metal song.

There are keyboards.

Atmospheric sections.

Chanting.

Tempo changes.

Extended instrumental passages.

And eventually one of those classic Maiden moments where the guitars start soaring and suddenly you’re mentally standing on top of a mountain despite actually being on the bus to Tesco.

The album itself remains one of Maiden’s most adventurous records.

But its title track?

That’s where the prog dial gets turned firmly towards ELEVEN.

✝️ 7. SIGN OF THE CROSS

The X Factor — 1995

The Blaze Bayley era remains one of the most debated periods in Maiden history.

But one thing is undeniable.

Maiden got DARK.

And Sign of the Cross might be the ultimate example.

Opening The X Factor, the track runs for more than eleven minutes and slowly builds from Gregorian-style chanting into something absolutely enormous.

Rather than immediately smashing you around the head with guitars, Maiden allow the atmosphere to develop.

There’s tension.

There’s mystery.

There’s menace.

And eventually the entire thing erupts.

The structure is sprawling and deliberately cinematic, feeling almost like several connected musical movements rather than one straightforward song.

Bruce Dickinson would later perform the track live after returning to Maiden, and it became an absolute monster on stage.

But the original remains fascinating.

This is Iron Maiden embracing patience, atmosphere and progressive storytelling at a point when much of mainstream rock was heading in completely different directions.

🏴 6. THE CLANSMAN

Virtual XI — 1998

“FREEEEEEEDOOOOOOM!”

Go on.

You heard Bruce Dickinson screaming it in your head, didn’t you?

😂🤘

Originally recorded with Blaze Bayley for Virtual XI, The Clansman became one of the era’s most enduring songs.

Inspired partly by Braveheart, the track stretches towards nine minutes and contains practically every ingredient required for an epic Maiden composition.

Quiet opening?

Yep.

Storytelling?

Yep.

Galloping bass?

Obviously.

Huge chorus?

Absolutely.

Instrumental sections?

You’d better believe it.

Bruce’s later live performances helped transform the song into a genuine concert favourite, but the foundations were already firmly in place.

It’s another example of Maiden treating songwriting like filmmaking.

There’s an introduction.

There’s tension.

There’s conflict.

There’s a climax.

There’s enough musical drama to invade Scotland.

💃 5. DANCE OF DEATH

Dance of Death — 2003

Once Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith returned to Maiden, something interesting happened.

The band’s progressive instincts seemed to become even stronger.

The three-guitar lineup gave Maiden an enormous musical playground.

And Dance of Death took full advantage.

The title track begins almost delicately, with Dickinson telling the story like some bloke in a pub who has just leaned across the table and said:

“You are NOT going to believe what happened to me…”

Then things get increasingly weird.

The song builds into a supernatural tale involving dancing spirits before erupting into classic Maiden gallops and harmonised guitars.

Musically, it moves through numerous sections without ever feeling completely disconnected.

That’s one of Maiden’s greatest talents.

They can cram enough ideas for an entire EP into one song and somehow convince you that it all belongs together.

Prog wizardry, mun.

💥 4. PASCHENDALE

Dance of Death — 2003

Then there’s Paschendale.

And this one is something special.

Inspired by the horrific Battle of Passchendaele during the First World War, the song uses progressive structure not simply to show off musically, but to tell a story.

The dynamics constantly shift.

Quiet passages create tension.

Heavy sections represent chaos.

The guitars feel almost cinematic.

Bruce delivers the lyrics with enormous dramatic weight.

Rather than simply writing a song about battle, Maiden attempt to make the music feel like one.

That’s where their progressive influences become incredibly powerful.

Complexity isn’t there merely for complexity’s sake.

It’s storytelling.

And Paschendale remains one of the finest examples of Maiden’s post-2000 songwriting.

🌪️ 3. WHEN THE WILD WIND BLOWS

The Final Frontier — 2010

By 2010, Maiden had completely stopped pretending they cared how long songs were supposed to be.

Enter When the Wild Wind Blows.

Clocking in at nearly eleven minutes, the closing track from The Final Frontier tells the story of an elderly couple preparing for what they believe is an approaching nuclear disaster.

It’s bleak.

It’s emotional.

And it’s classic late-period Steve Harris.

The track gradually builds through multiple sections, repeating themes and developing musical ideas as the story unfolds.

There’s no rush.

Maiden allow the song to breathe.

And that’s perhaps one of the biggest differences between early Maiden and later Maiden.

Young Maiden would sprint towards the finish line.

Older Maiden occasionally decide:

“Nah. We’ll get there eventually.”

😂

And somehow it works.

🔴 2. THE RED AND THE BLACK

The Book of Souls — 2015

Thirteen and a half minutes.

Because apparently eleven wasn’t enough.

The Red and the Black is Steve Harris operating without adult supervision.

And we love him for it.

Appearing on The Book of Souls, the song contains riffs, melodies, chanting, tempo changes, extended guitar sections and enough galloping bass to power a small Welsh village.

The final instrumental stretch is particularly glorious.

This isn’t a song trying to get onto daytime radio.

It’s Maiden making music for people who want to put headphones on and disappear into an enormous composition.

And by this stage in their career, why wouldn’t they?

Iron Maiden had earned the right to do practically anything they wanted.

Which brings us to…

🥇 1. EMPIRE OF THE CLOUDS

The Book of Souls — 2015

Eighteen.

Minutes.

Long.

😂🔥🔥🔥

Ladies and gentlemen, Iron Maiden have entered FULL PROG BOSS MODE.

Written by Bruce Dickinson, Empire of the Clouds is the longest song Maiden have ever recorded.

And naturally, it’s about the doomed British airship R101.

Because what else would an eighteen-minute Iron Maiden song be about?

The track opens with piano — played by Dickinson himself — before gradually expanding into an enormous orchestral metal composition.

Strings.

Guitars.

Piano.

Multiple musical movements.

Historical storytelling.

Huge crescendos.

Quiet reflective sections.

Absolute bloody madness.

It barely feels like a conventional Iron Maiden song.

Instead, it feels closer to a miniature rock opera.

And that’s precisely why it deserves the top spot.

After decades of progressive experimentation, Maiden finally reached the point where they essentially said:

“Right. Let’s make an eighteen-minute historical epic.”

Nobody stopped them.

Thank God.

🎸 IRON MAIDEN: THE PROG BAND HIDING INSIDE A METAL BAND?

Calling Iron Maiden a progressive metal band would probably be stretching things.

They’re heavy metal.

Always have been.

Always will be.

But progressive rock has undeniably helped shape their musical identity.

You can hear it in Steve Harris’s songwriting.

You can hear it in the unusual structures.

You can hear it in the concept albums.

You can hear it in the increasingly enormous songs.

And you can definitely hear it whenever a Maiden album reaches track eight and you notice the runtime says:

12:47.

😈

The influence isn’t about Maiden sounding exactly like Genesis, Yes or Jethro Tull.

It’s about the philosophy behind progressive music.

Go wherever the song takes you.

Don’t worry about radio.

Don’t worry about conventional structures.

Don’t worry if you’ve already been playing for nine minutes and Adrian Smith hasn’t done his third solo yet.

Just make the music.

That’s arguably one of the reasons Iron Maiden have remained so interesting across more than four decades.

They’ve never been afraid of ambition.

🤘 AND MAIDEN ARE STILL AT IT…

Even Maiden’s twenty-first-century albums have continued pushing towards longer and increasingly elaborate compositions.

Brave New World.

Dance of Death.

A Matter of Life and Death.

The Final Frontier.

The Book of Souls.

Senjutsu.

These records contain songs that stretch, wander, build slowly and occasionally require you to pack sandwiches before pressing play.

And while some fans prefer the compact fury of classics like Run to the Hills, The Trooper or 2 Minutes to Midnight, there’s something wonderfully stubborn about modern Maiden refusing to shorten anything.

They don’t need radio singles.

They don’t need trends.

They’re Iron bloody Maiden.

If Steve Harris wants a song to contain three intros, seventeen guitar melodies, a historical lesson and a bass gallop lasting longer than your lunch break…

Steve Harris is getting it.

🔥 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Iron Maiden’s relationship with progressive rock isn’t some strange side quest.

It’s been part of their musical DNA almost from day one.

From the twisting structure of Phantom of the Opera to the maritime insanity of Rime of the Ancient Mariner, the conceptual brilliance of Seventh Son, the darkness of Sign of the Cross and the gigantic ambition of Empire of the Clouds, Maiden have repeatedly demonstrated that heavy metal doesn’t need boundaries.

Sometimes the best thing you can possibly do is ignore the rulebook.

Turn the amps up.

Let the song breathe.

Add another section.

Then another guitar solo.

Then perhaps an orchestral bit.

And if the whole thing accidentally becomes eighteen minutes long?

Ah well.

That’s prog, butt. 🤘😂🔥

🎤 OVER TO YOU, RIFFERS!

What’s Iron Maiden’s greatest progressive epic?

Rime of the Ancient Mariner?

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son?

Paschendale?

Empire of the Clouds?

Or is there another gigantic Maiden masterpiece that deserves a place on our list?

Get involved and let us know.

🤘 Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Zero Apologies.

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
