Heavy metal giants METALLICA have released their first official live performance video from their spectacular Life Burns Faster residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, and it is nothing short of breathtaking! The professionally filmed footage captures their epic 1984 instrumental ‘The Call Of Ktulu’, accompanied by enormous, otherworldly visuals that transform the venue into a nightmarish Lovecraftian landscape.

If you thought METALLICA had already pushed the boundaries of what a heavy metal concert could look like, think again!

The legendary San Francisco metal band have shared an extraordinary performance of The Call Of Ktulu, filmed during the opening night of their Las Vegas Sphere residency on Thursday 1 October 2026.

Originally featured on their landmark second album Ride The Lightning, the instrumental has long been considered one of METALLICA’s most atmospheric compositions.

But performed inside one of the most technologically advanced entertainment venues in the world, the song has been transformed into a genuinely cinematic experience.

As James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo and Lars Ulrich perform on stage, an enormous mythical creature rises from the ocean across the Sphere’s gigantic wraparound screen.

The result combines classic thrash metal, horror-inspired imagery and groundbreaking visual technology.

And there is also an emotional tribute to the late, great Cliff Burton, making this particular performance even more memorable.

💀 ‘The Call Of Ktulu’ Comes To Life Inside The Sphere

The newly released video captures approximately 10 minutes of METALLICA’s opening-night performance.

While the musicians perform beneath the venue’s enormous screens, the audience is transported into an increasingly disturbing fantasy world.

Dark ocean imagery gives way to the appearance of a gigantic Cthulhu-like monster, inspired by the supernatural horror stories of author H.P. Lovecraft.

The towering creature emerges from the depths, filling the enormous display and dwarfing the musicians performing below.

It is an extraordinary interpretation of a song that has relied on atmosphere and imagination since its original release more than four decades ago.

Rather than distracting from the music, the imagery is designed to complement its shifting dynamics.

The slow, ominous opening passages establish a sense of unease before the performance builds into a powerful instrumental assault.

As the guitars become increasingly intense, the visuals develop into something resembling a supernatural horror film.

For an instrumental without a single lyric, The Call Of Ktulu tells an impressive story.

And the Sphere provides an enormous canvas on which to bring that story to life.

🖤 Emotional Tribute To Cliff Burton Brings Performance To A Powerful Conclusion

While the giant Lovecraftian monster provides the spectacle, the performance also includes a touching tribute to former METALLICA bassist Cliff Burton.

Towards the conclusion of the song, an iconic photograph of Burton, taken by legendary rock photographer Ross Halfin, appears above the enormous creature.

It is a poignant moment that connects METALLICA’s modern production with one of the most important musicians in their early history.

Following the performance, James Hetfield addressed the Las Vegas audience, dedicating the song to their late bandmate.

He told fans:

“We miss you and we love you, brother.”

Burton died on 27 September 1986, aged just 24, following a tragic tour bus accident in Sweden.

His death devastated METALLICA and remains one of the most heartbreaking moments in heavy metal history.

However, his influence on the band’s music continues to be celebrated.

Burton played a particularly important role in the development of METALLICA’s early instrumental compositions, bringing musical influences and compositional ideas that helped distinguish the group from many of their contemporaries.

The Call Of Ktulu remains one of the clearest examples of that influence.

More than 40 years after its original recording, the song continues to provide a powerful connection between METALLICA’s past and present.

🎸 The History Behind ‘The Call Of Ktulu’

Originally released in July 1984, The Call Of Ktulu closes METALLICA’s second studio album, Ride The Lightning.

The composition was credited to four musicians:

  • James Hetfield – Rhythm guitar
  • Lars Ulrich – Drums
  • Cliff Burton – Bass guitar
  • Dave Mustaine – Original songwriting contribution

Although Mustaine had been dismissed from METALLICA in 1983 and subsequently formed MEGADETH, his contributions to the instrumental remained part of the finished composition.

The song takes its inspiration from the fictional cosmic entity Cthulhu, created by American horror writer H.P. Lovecraft.

Lovecraft’s stories frequently explore ancient supernatural beings, mysterious civilisations and the terrifying possibility that humanity occupies an insignificant place within an unimaginably vast universe.

Those themes made his work particularly influential among heavy metal musicians.

For The Call Of Ktulu, METALLICA translated that atmosphere into music.

Instead of using lyrics to describe the creature, the band relied on ominous guitar melodies, changing tempos, powerful bass arrangements and increasingly dramatic instrumental passages.

The result became one of the most distinctive tracks on Ride The Lightning.

And unlike many instrumental compositions, it has retained an enduring reputation among METALLICA fans.

⚡ Cliff Burton’s Bass Playing Helped Define The Original Recording

One of the most celebrated aspects of The Call Of Ktulu is Cliff Burton’s extraordinary bass performance.

Burton was renowned for approaching the bass guitar differently from many heavy metal musicians of his generation.

Rather than simply following the rhythm guitar, he frequently introduced melodic ideas, elaborate arrangements and unusual effects.

His influences extended beyond traditional heavy metal, incorporating classical music, progressive rock and more experimental musical styles.

That approach became an important part of METALLICA’s sound during their formative years.

On The Call Of Ktulu, Burton’s bass contributes to the song’s ominous atmosphere while adding considerable musical depth.

The composition also demonstrates the band’s willingness to experiment beyond straightforward thrash metal arrangements.

It was an important indication of the more ambitious songwriting that would emerge on Master Of Puppets and …And Justice For All.

The decision to honour Burton during the Sphere performance therefore feels particularly appropriate.

His contribution to the original recording remains inseparable from the song’s enduring legacy.

🎬 Industrial Light & Magic Help Bring METALLICA’s Nightmare To Life

The astonishing visuals featured in the new performance video were created by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), the renowned visual effects company associated with some of cinema’s most spectacular productions.

The company has an extraordinary history in filmmaking, having worked on major franchises including Star Wars.

Bringing that level of visual expertise into a METALLICA concert creates exciting possibilities.

The enormous monster featured during The Call Of Ktulu is a particularly impressive example of how cinematic visual effects can be incorporated into live music.

Rather than simply projecting conventional concert footage onto a screen, the production creates a fully realised environment around the performers.

The musicians appear comparatively tiny beneath the enormous creature.

That sense of scale is central to the spectacle.

The Lovecraftian imagery makes the audience feel as though they are witnessing the arrival of something far larger and more terrifying than themselves.

It is exactly the sort of atmosphere that the original 1984 instrumental was designed to evoke.

And more than four decades later, the technology finally exists to present that vision on an extraordinary scale.

🔥 METALLICA’s Life Burns Faster Residency Is Taking Concert Production To Another Level

METALLICA launched their Life Burns Faster residency at the Sphere on 1 October 2026.

The production marks another major development in the band’s live career.

Located in Las Vegas, the Sphere is famous for its revolutionary visual technology and immersive audio capabilities.

The venue features an enormous wraparound LED screen with 16K-resolution display technology, creating a panoramic visual environment surrounding the audience.

Its advanced sound system is designed to deliver highly controlled audio throughout the performance space.

For a band whose music depends on powerful guitar tones, intricate arrangements and thunderous percussion, those capabilities offer enormous creative opportunities.

The production allows METALLICA to combine their established live performance style with a completely different approach to visual storytelling.

Songs are accompanied by specially created environments, animations and cinematic sequences designed to reflect their musical themes.

From dystopian imagery to supernatural horror, the residency explores visual possibilities that would be difficult to reproduce in a conventional arena or stadium.

And judging by The Call Of Ktulu, the creative team have embraced those possibilities enthusiastically.

🥁 Lars Ulrich Reveals How U2 Inspired The Sphere Residency

Interestingly, the idea of METALLICA performing at the Sphere originated after drummer Lars Ulrich attended U2’s opening performance at the venue in September 2023.

Ulrich has explained that he was immediately impressed by the possibilities offered by the revolutionary concert space.

Almost as soon as the performance began, he realised that METALLICA needed to explore the venue for themselves.

For a band that has consistently experimented with different stage designs, the opportunity was difficult to ignore.

From the enormous arena productions of the 1990s to their innovative in-the-round staging and recent M72 World Tour, METALLICA have frequently reconsidered how audiences experience live heavy metal.

The Sphere represents another major step in that evolution.

And the newly released The Call Of Ktulu video offers fans around the world their clearest official glimpse yet of what the production can achieve.

🎶 METALLICA Continue Their No Repeat Weekend Tradition

The Life Burns Faster residency follows the successful No Repeat Weekend format introduced during the band’s M72 World Tour.

Under the arrangement, METALLICA perform two completely different setlists across each Thursday and Saturday concert pairing.

That means fans attending both nights can experience a wider selection of songs without hearing the same tracks repeated.

The format allows the band to explore material from different periods of their extensive career.

Classic thrash metal favourites can appear alongside major commercial hits, rarely performed songs and more recent compositions.

The first Sphere performance featured material from across the band’s catalogue, including Battery, Creeping Death, Sad But True, Nothing Else Matters, Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets.

The Call Of Ktulu appeared during the second half of the concert, providing one of the evening’s most visually spectacular moments.

The residency comprises 24 performances across 12 No Repeat Weekends, running until March 2027.

💿 ‘Ride The Lightning’ – The Album That Changed Everything

Released on 27 July 1984, Ride The Lightning remains one of the most important albums in METALLICA’s history.

Following the raw aggression of their debut, Kill ‘Em All, the band’s second album demonstrated enormous musical development.

While retaining the speed and intensity of thrash metal, the record introduced more elaborate compositions, atmospheric arrangements and increasingly sophisticated songwriting.

Its eight tracks are:

  1. Fight Fire With Fire
  2. Ride The Lightning
  3. For Whom The Bell Tolls
  4. Fade To Black
  5. Trapped Under Ice
  6. Escape
  7. Creeping Death
  8. The Call Of Ktulu

The album became a crucial turning point in METALLICA’s career.

Songs such as Fade To Black demonstrated their willingness to explore emotional and melodic territory, while For Whom The Bell Tolls introduced a slower, heavier approach to songwriting.

Meanwhile, Creeping Death became one of their defining thrash metal anthems.

Closing the record with The Call Of Ktulu demonstrated the band’s ambition to create music that extended beyond conventional song structures.

Its inclusion in the Sphere residency is therefore particularly fitting.

The performance celebrates both METALLICA’s extraordinary musical history and their continued willingness to experiment.

🎸 METALLICA Continue To Push Boundaries More Than Four Decades Into Their Career

Few bands have maintained METALLICA’s international profile for more than four decades.

Formed in 1981, the group helped define the sound of American thrash metal before becoming one of the biggest rock bands in the world.

Their albums have influenced countless musicians across heavy metal, hard rock and alternative music.

Their current lineup features:

  • James Hetfield – Lead vocals and rhythm guitar
  • Lars Ulrich – Drums
  • Kirk Hammett – Lead guitar
  • Robert Trujillo – Bass guitar

Together, the four musicians continue to perform on some of the world’s biggest stages.

Their most recent studio album, 72 Seasons, arrived in April 2023 and demonstrated that the band still have plenty of creative energy.

However, the Sphere residency represents something different.

Rather than focusing primarily on new recordings, it offers an opportunity to reinterpret their extensive catalogue through cutting-edge concert technology.

And the performance of The Call Of Ktulu is a spectacular example of what can happen when classic heavy metal meets modern cinematic creativity.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT – Heavy Metal Meets Hollywood-Level Visual Spectacle!

METALLICA’s newly released performance of ‘The Call Of Ktulu’ is an astonishing demonstration of how immersive technology can transform the live concert experience.

The original recording was already a masterpiece of atmospheric instrumental metal.

Its sinister melodies, elaborate arrangements and Lovecraftian inspiration created an extraordinary sense of mystery long before modern digital effects existed.

Now, more than four decades later, the Sphere allows that atmosphere to become an enormous visual spectacle.

The gigantic Cthulhu rising from the depths is genuinely impressive.

The scale of the production is extraordinary.

And the decision to conclude the performance with a tribute to Cliff Burton adds a deeply emotional dimension to an already remarkable moment.

For longtime fans, it is a spectacular celebration of one of METALLICA’s most important early compositions.

For younger audiences, it demonstrates why Ride The Lightning remains such an influential record.

And for anyone interested in the future of live music, it offers a fascinating glimpse of how technology can expand the possibilities of concert production.

Four metal legends. One enormous monster. Ten minutes of instrumental brilliance.

METALLICA have unleashed Ktulu – and Las Vegas will never be quite the same again! 💀🎸🔥🤘

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
