Right. We’ve talked about fighting for venues.
Now let’s talk about owning them.
Because that’s exactly what Music Venue Properties is doing — and it’s one of the most punk-rock, stick-it-to-the-system moves the UK music industry has seen in years.
🧱 So… Who Are Music Venue Properties?
Music Venue Properties (MVP) is the property-owning arm linked to Music Venue Trust.
But here’s the genius bit.
Instead of just campaigning when venues are under threat…
They’re buying them.
Yes. Actually buying the buildings.
Not renting.
Not pleading with landlords.
Not crossing fingers at lease renewal time.
Owning them.
🎸 Why That’s Massive
Here’s the brutal reality:
Loads of grassroots venues don’t own their buildings. They rent.
Which means:
- Landlord sells up? Venue’s gone.
- Developer waves cash? Venue’s gone.
- Lease ends? Venue’s sweating.
Music Venue Properties flips that script.
By buying venues through community investment, they protect them long-term. No surprise evictions. No “luxury apartment conversion” nightmares.
It’s security. Stability. Survival.
💥 The “Own Our Venues” Revolution
Through the Own Our Venues campaign, MVP raises money from music fans, investors, and industry supporters to purchase iconic grassroots venues.
Fans can literally invest in protecting their favourite rooms.
Imagine telling someone at the bar:
“Yeah, I’ve got shares in the venue.”
That’s tidy, that is.
This isn’t corporate takeover energy.
It’s community takeover energy.
🏚️ What Kind of Venues Are We Talking?
The proper ones.
The sweaty, historic, story-soaked rooms that have launched careers.
The kind of places where:
- Bands play before they headline Download
- You stand three feet from your favourite guitarist
- The crowd feels like family
- The toilets have seen things
These venues aren’t just buildings. They’re memory factories.
And MVP is making sure they stay that way.
🧠 Why This Model Matters
Let’s zoom out for a second.
Grassroots venues run on tiny margins.
Energy bills are savage.
Insurance costs are climbing.
Property values are skyrocketing.
Owning the building removes one of the biggest threats.
It’s long-term thinking in an industry that usually runs on chaos and caffeine.
And honestly? It’s smart as hell.
🔥 The Riff Report Take
We shout about supporting local scenes.
We hype new bands.
We live for the 200-cap rooms.
Music Venue Properties is doing the hard graft behind the scenes to make sure those rooms still exist in ten, twenty, thirty years.
That’s legacy stuff.
If we want future headliners, we need foundations.
And foundations are made of bricks.
