Strap in, butt — because this is not your average rock documentary.
Netflix have gone full galaxy-brain with Brian May: The Cosmic Guitarist, a beautifully shot, brain-tingling, heart-on-sleeve deep dive into the mind, music and mad brilliance of one of rock’s most fascinating figures. 🤘🪐
This isn’t just about riffs.
It’s about curiosity, science, survival, and what happens when you refuse to live your life in just one lane.
🌟 TWO BRAINS. ONE LEGEND.
The documentary opens with a striking visual — young Brian and present-day Brian facing each other like two timelines colliding.
On one side: the curly-haired dreamer with stars in his eyes.
On the other: the silver-maned rock icon who’s lived a thousand lifetimes.
Right there, the message lands:
You don’t have to choose between art and intellect.
You can crank the amp and chase the cosmos.
Only Brian May could make that idea feel so natural.
🎸 THE RED SPECIAL & THE SOUND THAT SHOOK THE WORLD
Don’t worry — the Queen moments are very much present 👑🔥
We get:
- The legendary homemade Red Special guitar, built with his dad (proper DIY hero energy)
- That unmistakable layered guitar sound that redefined arena rock
- Studio wizardry that still baffles producers decades later
But instead of turning into a greatest-hits victory lap, the film treats the music as part of something bigger — creativity as a force of nature.
The riffs aren’t just riffs here.
They’re equations.
They’re constellations.
They’re controlled explosions.
🌌 SCIENCE, BADGERS & THE MAN BEHIND THE AMP
Here’s where the documentary really shines.
The film leans into:
- Brian returning to astrophysics after conquering the rock world
- Completing his PhD years after global superstardom
- His long-standing animal rights activism
- The quieter mental health struggles that fame never fixes
There’s something beautifully grounding about watching someone who’s played Wembley Stadium still light up when talking about cosmic dust and distant galaxies.
No rock star ego.
Just lifelong curiosity turned up to eleven.
🎬 A DOCUMENTARY THAT ACTUALLY GETS IT
Credit where it’s due — Netflix haven’t gone glossy for the sake of it.
This documentary breathes.
Moody visuals.
Thoughtful pacing.
Big ideas without the waffle.
It understands that Brian May isn’t interesting because he’s famous — he’s interesting because he never stopped asking questions.
That’s punk as hell, just delivered with a telescope instead of a safety pin.
🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT
Brian May: The Cosmic Guitarist is:
🔥 Inspiring
🧠 Smart without being smug
🎸 Proper rock ’n’ roll without shouting about it
🌌 A love letter to curiosity, creativity, and refusing to be boxed in
If you’ve ever been told to “just pick one thing,” this documentary plugs in a guitar, points at the stars, and says nah mun.
Rock doesn’t just roar.
Sometimes it reaches for the universe.
Stay loud. Stay curious.
