After the tragic events of September 11, 2001, America entered a state of mourning, unity, fear… and a full-blown music ban list. Yep, Clear Channel Communications (now iHeartMedia), one of the biggest media giants in the U.S., sent out a memo to its 1,200+ radio stations suggesting songs that were “lyrically questionable” to play in the wake of the attacks.
And boy oh boy, they didn’t hold back 😳
From Metallica to John Lennon, Rage Against the Machine to Louis Armstrong, the list of more than 150 “banned” or discouraged songs reads like a bizarre fever dream curated by a panicked boomer with a red marker and zero chill.

🧐 SO… WAS THIS A BAN OR A “SUGGESTION”?
To be fair, Clear Channel didn’t officially “ban” these songs—they claimed it was just a “suggested list” of songs that might be upsetting in the wake of the attacks.
But let’s be real: when the biggest radio overlord in the country sends a “suggestion,” most stations are gonna toe the line. The result? One of the most surreal moments in music censorship history.
🤘 FINAL THOUGHTS FROM THE RIFF REPORT
Grief does strange things to people. It makes you crave safety, overreact, and sometimes scapegoat a tune with a vaguely rebellious chorus. But if you’re banning “What a Wonderful World” and “Imagine” in the name of sensitivity, you’ve officially lost the plot, mun.
Music has always been about expression — raw, chaotic, comforting, furious. And in times of tragedy, maybe we need that more than ever. 🎵💔
So go on, butt — crank up the Rage, sing “Imagine” loud, and never let fear silence the songs that keep us human. ✊🎸
