Right then, butt.
We love gigs. We live for gigs. We plan our holidays around gigs. We’ve queued in sideways Welsh rain for gigs. We’ve lost our voices, our mates, and occasionally our dignity at gigs. 🤣🍺
But here’s the thing — live music should be chaotic in the right way.
Sweaty? Yes.
Loud? Always.
Full of elbows in the pit? Standard.
Unsafe? Absolutely not.
That’s where Safe Gigs for Women step in like the quiet heroes of the scene.
WHAT’S THE DEAL THEN?
Safe Gigs for Women is a UK charity working to make live music spaces safer for women and girls.
Not softer.
Not sanitised.
Not “ban the mosh pit”.
Just safer.
They work with venues, promoters and festivals to:
🔥 Improve reporting systems
🔥 Train staff to handle harassment properly
🔥 Make safety messaging visible
🔥 Encourage accountability in live spaces
Basically — they help venues sort their act out properly.
Because too often, when something happens at a gig, the response is a shrug and a “what do you expect, it’s a rock show?”
No, mun. That’s not how this works.
THIS ISN’T “WOKE POLICING” – IT’S COMMON SENSE
There’s this weird myth that safety kills vibe.
Rubbish.
Safety protects vibe.
The pit is meant to be consensual chaos. You both know what you’re getting into. You bounce off each other, you pick each other up, you shout the chorus together. That’s community.
Unwanted grabbing? Intimidation? Creepy behaviour?
That’s not rock ’n’ roll rebellion.
That’s just someone being a plank.
If women don’t feel safe:
- They stop coming.
- They stand at the back.
- They leave early.
- The scene shrinks.
And this scene? It belongs to everyone.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO WALES TOO 🏴
From sweaty Tramshed nights to arena shows in Swansea, from Steelhouse winds to Download mud baths — our scene thrives on inclusivity.
We bang on about community all the time here at The Riff Report. Boots on the barrier. Arms round strangers. Voices gone by midnight.
That community only works if everyone feels safe inside it.
Simple as that.
THE BIGGER PICTURE 🧠
Let’s zoom out for a second.
Harassment at gigs isn’t about “metal being wild”. It’s about systems that haven’t been updated in years.
Think of it like dodgy sound engineering.
If the feedback keeps screaming, you don’t smash the speakers — you fix the setup.
Safe Gigs for Women are about fixing the setup.
They’re giving venues tools. Structure. Accountability.
And that’s how culture shifts. Slowly. Properly. For good.
SO WHAT CAN WE DO?
If you’re a gig-goer:
✔ Look out for your mates.
✔ Call out dodgy behaviour when you see it.
✔ Support venues that take safety seriously.
If you’re a venue or promoter?
Do better. Sign up. Train staff. Make reporting clear.
It’s not hard — it’s just responsibility.
THE RIFF REPORT TAKE 🎤
Music is liberation.
Music is escape.
Music is therapy with distortion pedals.
The only thing you should worry about at a gig is whether they’ll play the deep cut off track seven.
Safer gigs don’t kill energy.
They protect it.
And if protecting the scene means backing charities like Safe Gigs for Women?
Then count us in, mun.
Keep it loud.
Keep it sweaty.
Keep it safe. 🤘🔥
