One of the greatest days in heavy metal history
There are gigs, there are legendary gigsโฆ and then there are those rare, spine-tingling moments where music history grabs you by the battle jacket and says: โPay attention, mun โ this is special.โ
One year on from Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourneโs Back To The Beginning farewell show, it still feels almost unreal that it actually happened. On 5 July 2025, Villa Park in Birmingham became the loudest, darkest, most emotional cathedral in heavy metal as Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward reunited as the original Black Sabbath line-up for one final homecoming. The official announcement billed the show as Ozzyโs final performance, with Sabbath headlining the all-day event at Villa Park, right back where the story began.

Black Sabbath didnโt come from polished studios, industry boardrooms or glossy nonsense. They came from the smoke, steel, grit and working-class thunder of Birmingham โ and thatโs why Back To The Beginning hit so hard.
This was the band that helped drag heavy metal out of the shadows and into the world. The band that made rock sound darker, heavier, stranger and more dangerous. The band that gave every outsider, misfit and black-clad riff addict something to believe in.
And then, decades later, they went home.
Villa Park wasnโt just a stadium that day. It became the beating black heart of heavy music. Fans travelled from everywhere, packing into Birmingham like the final gathering of the global metal tribe. Cure Parkinsonโs later reported that over 40,000 people attended, with an estimated 5.8 million watching via the official livestream. That is absolutely bonkers in the best possible way.
That means battle jackets in the stands, tears in living rooms, horns raised across continents, and probably a fair few dads saying, โI saw Sabbath back in the day,โ for the nine-millionth time. And you know what? Fair play. This was the day to say it.
A line-up heavier than a wet Welsh festival tent
The bill itself was ridiculous. Proper โwho made this fantasy playlist and how did they get funding?โ levels of ridiculous.
The event brought together a monster cast of metal royalty, with names including Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Gojira, Halestorm, Alice In Chains, Lamb Of God, Anthrax, Mastodon, Tool and Guns Nโ Roses all part of the wider celebration of Sabbath and Ozzy. The original announcement also confirmed Tom Morello as musical director, which is about as fitting as putting flames on a Marshall stack.
It was less a support bill and more a family reunion for every band that ever owed Sabbath a pint.
You could feel the respect running through the whole day. These werenโt bands simply turning up for a high-profile slot. They were there to pay tribute to the source. The big bang. The riff before all riffs. The dark spark that lit the furnace.
Every set felt like a thank-you note written in volume, sweat and feedback.
A farewell with a massive heart

He just had to be there.
And he was.
Ozzyโs solo set featured โI Donโt Know,โ โMr. Crowley,โ โSuicide Solution,โ โMama, Iโm Coming Homeโ and โCrazy Trainโ โ a compact but mighty run through some of the songs that made him one of the most iconic frontmen in rock history.
Every song felt loaded with meaning. โMr. Crowleyโ carried that eerie grandeur. โCrazy Trainโ brought the stadium together like a mad metal congregation. But โMama, Iโm Coming Homeโ? That one landed straight in the chest.
Because this wasnโt just Ozzy singing a classic ballad.
This was Ozzy, back in Birmingham, giving the fans everything he had left.
There are moments in live music where technique, perfection and polish stop mattering. What matters is presence. Spirit. History. Connection.

When โWar Pigsโ rang out, it felt less like a song and more like a warning siren from history.
When โIron Manโ landed, Villa Park became one giant riff machine.
And when โParanoidโ closed the night, followed by fireworks, that was it. The final blast. The last roar. The sound of heavy metal saluting its makers.
Imagine being there for that. Imagine the noise. Imagine the lump in the throat. Imagine trying to explain it to someone who thinks โheavy metalโ is just loud guitars and angry blokes.
Nah, butt. This was mythology.
The heartbreak that followed
At the time, Back To The Beginning already felt historic. Then, just weeks later, it became something even more powerful.
Ozzy Osbourne died on 22 July 2025, aged 76, with his family saying he had passed away surrounded by love. Reuters reported that his final concert had taken place in Birmingham on 5 July, where he performed seated before thousands of emotional fans.
That changed how the farewell gig was remembered almost instantly.
It wasnโt just Ozzyโs final performance.
It became his final goodbye.
And there is something devastatingly beautiful about that. He got to return home. He got to hear the fans one more time. He got to stand โ in spirit, even if seated in body โ with Sabbath again. The official announcement rightly called Sabbath the band who set the blueprint for the many routes heavy metal would take, and that influence is still everywhere.

Every singer howling about darkness and survival.
Every festival crowd chanting along under grey skies.
Every teenager discovering Paranoid and suddenly thinking, โOhhh, this is what Iโve been missing.โ
Thatโs Sabbath.
And Ozzy? Ozzy was chaos, comedy, vulnerability and darkness all rolled into one unmistakable Brummie voice. He was terrifying and loveable. Ridiculous and sincere. A rock star, a survivor, a TV icon, a metal god, and somehow still the bloke you could imagine shouting for Sharon because heโd lost the remote.
There will never be another one.
One year on, the echoes are still ringing
A year later, Back To The Beginning feels even bigger than it did on the day.
It was a farewell gig.
It was a charity event.
It was a homecoming.
It was a tribute.
It was a celebration.
It was a living wake before the world realised just how precious that moment really was.
