Deep Purple fans, gather round the campfire, crack open the imaginary tour bus fridge, and prepare for some proper rock โ€™nโ€™ roll storytelling โ€” because Ian Gillan is heading out on the road in 2027 for a huge UK spoken word tour.

The legendary Deep Purple vocalist has announced The Talking Gibโ€™rish Tour, a 24-date run across April and May 2027, bringing fans face-to-face with one of the most iconic voices in hard rock history.

And yes, Wales is getting a slice of the action. Gillan will bring the tour to Cardiff New Theatre on Saturday 1st May 2027.

Tidy? Tidy doesnโ€™t even cover it, mun. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ‰

From Smoke On The Water To Stories From The Road ๐ŸŽค

This wonโ€™t be your standard rock gig. There wonโ€™t be a wall of amps, a drum riser trying to reach low orbit, or a stage full of smoke machines making the front row look like theyโ€™ve wandered into a chip shop fire.

Instead, this is something much rarer.

Ian Gillan. On stage. Telling stories.

Thatโ€™s it. Thatโ€™s the magic.

The man has spent more than six decades in music, fronted one of the most influential rock bands of all time, toured the world, helped shape hard rock as we know it, and probably has enough backstage stories to make most band autobiographies look like a Tesco meal deal receipt.

From his early days in Hounslow to the global rise of Deep Purple, this tour promises a proper deep dive into the life, music, madness, memories, and mischief of one of rockโ€™s true originals.

A Voice That Helped Define Rock History ๐Ÿ’œ

Ian Gillan isnโ€™t just โ€œthe singer from Deep Purple.โ€

Nah butt, heโ€™s one of the voices.

The kind of voice that slices through a venue like a pint glass hitting concrete. The kind of voice that made hard rock feel dangerous, dramatic, theatrical, and absolutely massive.

When Gillan joined Deep Purple in 1969, the band entered one of the most important chapters in rock history. Albums like Machine Head helped cement Deep Purple as pioneers of hard rock, while Smoke On The Water became one of the most recognisable riffs ever written.

You know the riff.

Your nan knows the riff.

The bloke testing guitars in every music shop since 1972 definitely knows the riff.

Deep Purpleโ€™s music has echoed through arenas, bedrooms, garages, pubs, festivals, dodgy rehearsal rooms, and every guitaristโ€™s first attempt at annoying the neighbours. And through so much of that legacy stands Ian Gillan โ€” unmistakable, powerful, and completely his own beast.

The Talking Gibโ€™rish Tour โ€” What Fans Can Expect ๐Ÿค˜

The title alone is brilliant: Talking Gibโ€™rish.

It sounds like exactly the sort of thing youโ€™d hear at 1am backstage at a festival when someoneโ€™s lost the guest passes, the WiFi has died, and a drummer is trying to explain quantum physics using a Greggs sausage roll.

But behind the cheeky title is a seriously special night for fans.

The tour is expected to feature personal stories from Gillanโ€™s extraordinary life and career, including reflections on Deep Purple, life on the road, the people heโ€™s met, the places heโ€™s played, and the moments that shaped him as an artist.

Itโ€™s not just a history lesson.

Itโ€™s a chance to sit in the room with a rock icon and hear the stories straight from the source โ€” candid, funny, unfiltered, and full of that old-school charm you simply canโ€™t fake.

No algorithm. No over-polished nonsense. Just a microphone, a legend, and a lifetime of rock โ€™nโ€™ roll chaos.

Cardiff Gets Its Purple Moment ๐Ÿ‰

For Welsh fans, the big one is Saturday 1st May 2027 at Cardiff New Theatre.

Thatโ€™s a proper lush booking.

Cardiff has seen its fair share of rock royalty over the years, but this one feels different. Itโ€™s intimate. Itโ€™s personal. Itโ€™s not about volume for once โ€” although, letโ€™s be fair, with Ian Gillan involved, the stories might still come with enough force to rattle the plaster.

The New Theatre is a cracking setting for this sort of show too. It gives fans the chance to properly listen, soak it all in, and maybe hear tales that never made it into the glossy tour programmes or official band documentaries.

This is the sort of night where you donโ€™t just leave saying, โ€œThat was good.โ€

You leave saying, โ€œI canโ€™t believe he told that story.โ€

Why This Tour Matters ๐Ÿ’œ

Spoken word tours can sometimes feel like a victory lap.

This doesnโ€™t.

This feels more like opening the vault.

Ian Gillan has been part of some of the biggest chapters in rock music, but what makes this tour exciting is the human side of it. The stories behind the songs. The chaos behind the curtain. The friendships, the weirdness, the touring disasters, the magic nights, the moments when everything went wrong and somehow became legendary.

Rock fans love riffs, of course we do. Weโ€™re simple creatures. Give us a massive guitar tone and weโ€™ll follow it into a muddy field like moths to a Marshall stack.

But we also love the mythology.

We love the โ€œyou had to be thereโ€ moments.

And with Ian Gillan, youโ€™re talking about a bloke who really was there โ€” for the rise of hard rock, for Deep Purpleโ€™s biggest moments, for the era when bands werenโ€™t brands, tours were survival missions, and rock stars genuinely looked like they might have been assembled from leather jackets, tea, and questionable hotel decisions.

The Riff Report Verdict ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ”ฅ

This is an absolute must for Deep Purple fans, classic rock lovers, music history nerds, and anyone who enjoys a good backstage tale told by someone who actually lived it.

The Talking Gibโ€™rish Tour sounds like itโ€™ll be warm, funny, reflective, and packed with the kind of stories that make you fall in love with rock music all over again.

And with Cardiff New Theatre on the list, Welsh fans donโ€™t even need to cross the bridge to catch it. Result.

Ian Gillan helped give hard rock one of its greatest voices. In 2027, fans will get the chance to hear that voice in a totally different way โ€” not belting out the classics, but sharing the stories behind a lifetime spent on the road.

Purple fans, get this one on your radar.

Because when a legend starts talking gibโ€™rish, you listen. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿค˜

The Talking Gibโ€™rish Tour comes to Cardiff New Theatre on Saturday 1st May 2027.

๐ŸŽธ About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise โ€” it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publicationโ€™s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist โ€” sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
