The Crowd Doesn’t Lie, Downloaders…

Download Festival is a place where legends are made, riffs shake the ground, and occasionally a band completely blows expectations out of the water.

This weekend, one of the biggest talking points around Donington wasn’t pyro, giant stage productions, or legendary rock icons.

It was a packed-out tent.

Yep, we’re talking about The All-American Rejects.

While Guns N’ Roses occupied the headline slot on the Apex Stage, thousands of Downloaders appeared to make a different choice.

A Tent Absolutely Bursting At The Seams

The All-American Rejects crowd looked absolutely mental.

Fans packed every available inch of space.

People were spilling out of the tent.

Walkways were jammed.

Security and stewards had their work cut out managing the sheer number of people trying to get a glimpse of the band.

Every chorus felt like a football crowd had invaded Download.

When songs like Dirty Little Secret, Move Along, Swing, Swing and Gives You Hell kicked in, the crowd responded like they were watching a headline act.

Meanwhile At Guns N’ Roses…

Let’s be clear before anyone starts launching cans of warm lager our way…

Guns N’ Roses are one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

The Apex Stage crowd was still huge, and hearing classics such as Welcome To The Jungle, Sweet Child O’ Mine, November Rain and Paradise City live is something every rock fan should experience at least once.

However, one thing became increasingly noticeable throughout the set.

People were leaving.

As the evening went on, streams of fans could be seen heading away from the Apex Stage, back towards campsites, food vendors, District X and other areas of the festival.

Unlike the packed chaos surrounding The All-American Rejects, there appeared to be plenty of room across large sections of the arena.

Fans were sitting in camping chairs.

Others were grabbing food and drinks.

Some were already making their way back to camp.

For a headline set from one of the biggest bands in rock history, it felt surprisingly spacious in places.

So Who Should Have Headlined?

If we’re talking influence, album sales and rock history, then Guns N’ Roses remain a worthy Download headliner.

But if we’re judging purely by crowd demand on the day?

The All-American Rejects might have delivered one of the most in-demand performances of the entire festival.

The contrast was impossible to ignore.

One stage had people struggling to get near the action.

The other had fans actively walking away before the end of the headline set.

The Riff Report Verdict

🤘 Guns N’ Roses are legends and deserved respect as headliners.

🤘 The All-American Rejects absolutely outperformed expectations.

🤘 Download may have underestimated just how massive the demand for The All-American Rejects would be.

🤘 Seeing fans leave the Guns N’ Roses set while thousands squeezed into a tent elsewhere tells its own story.

Sometimes the biggest crowd reaction isn’t on the biggest stage.

And at Download Festival 2026, The All-American Rejects may have accidentally stolen the weekend.

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
