Former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg has opened up about the creative restrictions he faced during a major chapter of his career, revealing that legal limitations prevented him from collaborating freely with other artists — and admitting that part of his creativity felt like it was “dying” as a result.
For a musician, being told not to make music with other musicians sounds a bit like telling Lemmy to turn the bass down.
It just doesn’t compute, mun. 🤘
But according to Jay Weinberg, restrictions surrounding outside collaborations meant there was an entire side of his musical personality that simply wasn’t getting the chance to breathe.
And now, with that chapter behind him, Weinberg appears determined to make up for lost time.

Weinberg has spoken about how important collaboration is to him as a musician, explaining that there was a period when legal restrictions prevented him from simply jumping into projects with other artists.
That might not sound particularly dramatic on paper.

🎭 Ten Years Behind The Slipknot Kit
Of course, Weinberg will forever be associated with his decade behind the kit for Slipknot.
He joined the Iowa metal giants following the departure of founding drummer Joey Jordison and stepped into what was arguably one of the most intimidating drumming positions in modern metal.
No pressure, then.
Just replace one of the most beloved and influential metal drummers of his generation.

Except Weinberg didn’t simply survive.
He absolutely battered his way into the band’s history.
During his tenure, he appeared on albums including .5: The Gray Chapter, We Are Not Your Kind and The End, So Far, while touring the world and becoming a familiar masked figure to a whole new generation of Maggots.
His frantic energy behind the kit fitted Slipknot perfectly.
Watching Weinberg live sometimes felt less like watching somebody play drums and more like witnessing a man trying to win an argument with an industrial washing machine.

Then came November 2023.
Slipknot announced that they had parted ways with Weinberg, describing the move as a “creative decision.”
For fans, it was another enormous change in a band that had already experienced several major lineup departures.

Suddenly, after around a decade inside one of the biggest metal bands on Earth, the drummer was facing an entirely different future.
But sometimes having one door slammed shut means you suddenly notice there are about twelve other doors sitting wide open.
And Weinberg certainly hasn’t spent his post-Slipknot life sitting around staring at his drumsticks.
🤘 A New Chapter With Suicidal Tendencies
One of the biggest moves following his Slipknot departure was Weinberg joining legendary crossover thrash outfit Suicidal Tendencies.
And let’s be fair…
That’s a pretty tidy place for a drummer like Jay to land.
Suicidal Tendencies have always lived somewhere between punk attitude, hardcore aggression, thrash metal and complete musical chaos — meaning Weinberg’s explosive style feels right at home.
Rather than disappearing following his Slipknot exit, Weinberg immediately began building another chapter.
But perhaps even more interesting than joining another established band has been his renewed ability to collaborate.
🎶 Collaboration Is Back On The Menu
Weinberg’s comments suggest that creative freedom has become hugely important to him.
Rather than having his musical identity tied exclusively to one enormous machine, he’s now able to explore ideas with musicians from different scenes and backgrounds.
And that can be incredibly healthy for an artist.
Because collaboration isn’t necessarily about starting another full-time band.
Sometimes it’s one song.
Sometimes it’s a studio session.
Sometimes it’s playing something completely outside your normal genre.
Sometimes it’s just two musicians getting together and thinking:
“What happens if we do THIS?”
Then somebody plugs in an amp.
The drummer counts to four.
And three hours later the neighbours have filed a complaint.

🥁 Jay Weinberg Is More Than “The Former Slipknot Drummer”
That’s perhaps the most interesting part of this new phase.
For years, Weinberg’s name naturally came with two words attached:
Slipknot drummer.
That’s understandable.
Slipknot are gigantic.
But Weinberg’s musical story stretches much further than one band.
Before joining Slipknot, he’d already played with acts including Madball and Against Me!, while also performing with his father Max Weinberg’s band.
Music has basically surrounded Jay his entire life.
His father, of course, is the legendary drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, meaning Jay grew up with a fairly spectacular view of what life as a professional musician actually involves.
So perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that collaboration means so much to him.
This isn’t somebody who simply wants a job behind a drum kit.
He wants to create.
🔓 Creative Freedom After Slipknot
There is also something fascinating about hearing musicians discuss what happens behind the curtain of enormous bands.
Fans see the albums.
We see the tours.
We see the pyro.
We see 50,000 people losing their minds while nine masked lunatics attempt to turn a festival stage into a controlled demolition.

What we don’t always see are the contracts, business arrangements and restrictions surrounding those artists.
At that level, a band isn’t simply several mates making noise in a rehearsal room anymore.
It’s a global business.
There are record labels.
Management companies.
Touring agreements.
Merchandising.
Brand partnerships.
Contracts thick enough to stop a bullet.
And sometimes those arrangements can affect what individual musicians are able to pursue outside their main project.
Weinberg’s comments provide an intriguing glimpse into how frustrating that situation can become when somebody has ideas bubbling away but limited opportunities to explore them.
💥 Sometimes The Side Quest Matters
Rock and metal history is absolutely stuffed with musicians whose side projects ended up producing brilliant music.
Dave Grohl had ideas outside Nirvana.
Corey Taylor had Stone Sour alongside Slipknot.
Maynard James Keenan has explored multiple musical worlds beyond Tool.
Mike Patton apparently wakes up every morning and accidentally forms another band before breakfast.

Different projects allow musicians to scratch different creative itches.
Something that doesn’t belong in one band might become absolutely perfect somewhere else.
And preventing that experimentation can understandably become frustrating.
That’s why Weinberg describing part of his creativity as “dying” feels particularly significant.
This wasn’t simply about wanting another gig.
It was about needing another outlet.
🚀 So What Comes Next?
That’s the exciting bit.
Jay Weinberg suddenly appears to have a much wider creative playground in front of him.
He’s already proven he can survive one of the most demanding gigs in heavy metal.
He’s played arenas.
He’s headlined festivals.
He’s recorded major albums.
He’s stood behind a drum kit while Slipknot unleashed absolute carnage around him.
There isn’t much left for the bloke to prove.
Which means this next period could simply be about making music because something sounds exciting.
No box.
No expectations.
No need for every project to sound like Slipknot.
Just collaboration.
Experimentation.
And presumably an absolutely irresponsible number of cymbals. 🥁😂
🤘 The Riff Report Verdict
There will always be enormous interest surrounding Jay Weinberg because of his history with Slipknot.
That’s unavoidable.
But perhaps the more interesting story now isn’t why he left Slipknot.
It’s what creative freedom allows him to become next.
If restrictions previously prevented Weinberg from working with musicians who inspired him, then removing those barriers could open the door to some seriously interesting music.
Metal.
Hardcore.
Punk.
Alternative.
Experimental stuff.
Maybe something completely unexpected.
Whatever happens, one thing seems pretty clear:
Jay Weinberg wants to create.
And after admitting that part of his creativity once felt like it was dying, he’s now got the opportunity to turn that frustration into something loud.
Very loud.
