Here at The Riff Report, we LOVE showing off the photos we get at gigs, festivals, sweaty pits, backstage, and beyond. From front row madness at Download to fire-belching stages at Wacken, our cameras (and phones held dangerously high) are always snapping the magic. But latelyโฆ weโve hit a bit of a snag.
Instagramโs new AI?
Itโs got the attitude of a grumpy bouncer with no sense of fun.
Fishnets? Flagged. A bit of cleavage? Banned. Artistic lighting on a rock goddess mid-scream? Too spicy apparently. ๐
So now, weโre asking the big question:
๐ธ SHOULD WE START WATERMARKING OUR PHOTOS?
We never wanted to go full Getty Images, but if our snaps are being flagged, reposted, or downright stolen, maybe itโs time to get cheeky with a little stamp of Riff identity.
Letโs break it downโฆ
โ WHY WATERMARKING MIGHT BE TIDY AF
๐ฅ 1. Credit Where Itโs Due, Mun
We put in the hours. In the pit. In the rain. Holding cameras while dodging elbows and flying pint cups.
So when one of our shots ends up on a bandโs Insta story (or in a dodgy bootleg merch ad ๐ค) โ weโd at least like a little โ๐ท @theriffreportukโ shout, diolch very much.
๐ง 2. Brand Recognition, Baby
Seeing that little Riff Report logo in the corner of a killer live shot builds trust and familiarity.
People know itโs us. People know it slaps. People click for more.
๐ถ๏ธ 3. Exclusives Deserve Protection
If weโve been lucky enough to capture VIP sets, backstage chaos, or a surprise soundcheck singalong, watermarking helps keep it clear who got the goods.
โ WHY WEโVE AVOIDED IT UNTIL NOW
๐จ 1. It Can Ruin The Shot
Weโre all about vibes, and thereโs nothing worse than a massive, ugly watermark across someoneโs face mid-stage dive.
Keep it classy, not clunky.
๐ฑ 2. Social Sharing Works Best Clean
Fans love resharing our pics โ and when the photos are watermark-free, theyโre more likely to spread like wildfire.
Weโd rather get tagged and seen than hidden behind a massive copyright badge.
๐ 3. Weโre Not the Watermark Police
Letโs be honest. Itโs the internet. If someone really wants to nick your pic, theyโll crop it, blur it, or repost it anyway.
Weโre not trying to start a turf war over who owns the pixels.
๐ค ENTER: INSTAGRAM AI โ THE PHOTO FLAGGING MENACE
Lately, Instagramโs โprotectiveโ AI has been treating our rockโnโroll photography like itโs NSFW chaos.
What used to be accepted as stage fashion is now being automatically flagged because someone dared wear a fishnet bodysuit or latex leggings.
Itโs rock โnโ roll, not OnlyFans, butt!
And guess what?
If you watermark your image, AI sometimes leaves it alone.
Yeahโฆ figure that one out.
We get it โ thereโs a balance to be struck between keeping platforms โsafeโ and letting people share their artistic expression. But when your frontwoman in a PVC catsuit at Bloodstock gets pulled down, and a lad eating a doner kebab in his pants at Glasto stays up? We were tamping.
๐ฏ OUR GAME PLAN GOING FORWARD
Weโre not about to slap a massive โTHE RIFF REPORT 2025โขโ over every inch of our photos โ weโve got better taste than that, mun.
Instead, hereโs what weโre thinking:
โ๏ธ Tiered Watermark Strategy (sounds fancy, innit?)
- ๐ผ๏ธ Blog Posts & Galleries:
Subtle watermark in the bottom corner. Enough to claim it, not enough to distract. - ๐ฑ Instagram / Facebook / X (Twitter):
No watermark, but weโll shout loud if we catch someone nicking our stuff.
(And weโll make a meme about it.) - ๐๏ธ Exclusive or VIP Content:
Watermarked. Full stop. If weโve been granted behind-the-scenes access or weโre showing somethingย reallyย rare, weโll own it. - ๐ป Stories & Reels:
Probably watermark-free. Let the vibes fly.
And if Instagram keeps messing with our stuff? We might just start posting our photo dumps on our own site first โ no filters, no AI, just pure rockโnโroll filth ๐ค
๐ฌ WHAT DO YOU LOT THINK?
Do you like seeing watermarks? Hate โem? Would you rather get tagged or see a subtle brand on the photo?
Let us know โ slide into our DMs or comment on our latest post. We’re a community, after all, and we want to keep sharing the music, the madness, and the moments without some robot slapping a โcontent violationโ sticker on everything louder than a whisper.
๐ข Final Words (shouted, not typed)
WEโRE NOT A BLOODY NUDITY ACCOUNT, INSTAGRAM. WEโRE JUST A ROCK BLOG.
If someoneโs outfit is too metal for your algorithm โ thatโs a you problem.
In the meantime, weโll keep snapping the chaos, sharing the beauty, and maybe adding a tiny Riff Report stamp to the corner.
Rock on, you beautiful mosh gremlins.
Diolch for being part of the madness ๐ค๐ฅ๐ค
