📍 Off-Broadway | Broadway | West End | Worldwide Tours | 1986 Film | 2023/24 Revivals
🎶 “Feed me, all night long!” – A sci-fi horror musical has never sounded so damn catchy.
🌍 Background: Where It All Began
Born from the minds of Howard Ashman (lyrics/book) and Alan Menken (music), Little Shop of Horrors premiered Off-Broadway in 1982 – a lo-fi, high-energy blend of Roger Corman’s 1960 cult film and musical theatre magic.
Fun fact? This was the duo’s first major hit – before they went on to define Disney’s Renaissance with The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast.
🧪 The Plot – With a Twist of Tragedy
This isn’t just a campy comedy. It’s a Greek tragedy in B-movie drag. Here’s how it plays out:
-
Skid Row florist’s assistant Seymour Krelborn is hopelessly in love with his co-worker, Audrey.
-
After a strange eclipse, Seymour finds a bizarre plant that he names Audrey II.
-
The plant brings him fame, fortune… and demands to be fed – with human blood.
-
As the plant grows, Seymour’s morality withers.
-
Audrey II becomes a sentient, sassy, singing carnivorous alien overlord.
-
The show ends differently depending on the version (we’ll come back to that…).
It’s a tale of temptation, toxic ambition, and the price of playing God – all set to a Motown beat.
🎶 Musical Numbers – Now with More Bite
This soundtrack slays. The songs are as clever as they are catchy – blending humor, heartbreak, and horror with genre-savvy precision.
FULL TRACK LIST HIGHLIGHTS:
-
“Prologue (Little Shop of Horrors)” – A brassy blast of doom from the Greek Chorus girls.
-
“Skid Row (Downtown)” – One of the best opening ensemble numbers ever written.
-
“Da-Doo” – How Seymour finds Audrey II (and yes, the plant literally sings along).
-
“Grow for Me” – A hilariously heartfelt ballad about feeding your plant blood.
-
“Somewhere That’s Green” – Audrey’s wistful dream of 1950s domestic bliss (tragically ironic).
-
“Dentist!” – Meet Orin Scrivello, DDS. A gas-huffing sadist who loves root canals.
-
“Feed Me (Git It!)” – Audrey II comes alive. It’s seductive. It’s funky. It’s lethal.
-
“Suddenly Seymour” – The unexpected romantic high point – soaring, earnest, brilliant.
-
“Suppertime” / “The Meek Shall Inherit” – As Seymour spirals deeper into the plant’s grip.
-
“Finale (Don’t Feed the Plants)” – A cautionary closer with a punchline bite.
🗣️ Every line is crafted with precision, pun, and purpose. And Audrey II’s voice? Usually a deep, soulful bass – think Levi Stubbs meets Satan at a disco.
🧬 Audrey II – A Musical Theatre Marvel
Audrey II isn’t just a puppet. It’s a character, a spectacle, and a villain worthy of Broadway’s best.
-
Voice: Deep, seductive, soulful, and terrifying. Often played by a separate off-stage vocalist.
-
Puppetry: The plant grows from a tiny pot to a stage-devouring monster.
-
Operators: Requires multiple puppeteers to sync lip movement and body motion.
-
Tech: Larger productions use hydraulics, animatronics, and LED lighting to make the plant appear truly alive.
-
Kill Count: In most versions? Let’s just say… don’t stand too close to the leaves.
Every audience member waits for Audrey II’s big moments – and it never disappoints.
🎭 Characters: Quirky, Tragic, and Iconic
-
Seymour – A classic nebbish. Kind-hearted, morally grey, and ultimately tragic.
-
Audrey – Beautiful, bruised, and dreaming of peace. Her journey is genuinely moving.
-
Mr. Mushnik – The money-grubbing florist caught between ethics and opportunity.
-
Orin Scrivello – The dentist who makes the audience love to hate him. Usually played hilariously over-the-top.
-
Crystal, Ronnette, & Chiffon – The all-singing Greek Chorus who steal every scene with sass, sparkle, and syncopation.
🎬 The Multiple Endings Debate
🎭 Original Stage Version:
Seymour and Audrey both die. Audrey II takes over the world. DARK.
Message: Don’t sell your soul – even for love.
🎬 1986 Film Version:
Test audiences hated the original tragic ending, so…
New ending: Seymour defeats Audrey II. He and Audrey live happily ever after in suburbia.
Message: Hollywood loves a happy ending (but also… check your garden).
💡 Many modern revivals return to the darker, original stage ending – which hits harder and sticks with you.
