Metalheads! We need to talk. Not about your questionable back tattoos or how you lost your left shoe in the Slayer pit back in ’08 (RIP trainer ๐ฅฒ)โฆ No, we’re diving into the steaming cauldron of bullsh*t myths that have clung to heavy metal like your hair to your sweaty neck at Bloodstock.
Letโs crank the volume and blow these 12 metal myths to bits with the power of truth, riffs, and a generous helping of sarcasm ๐ธ๐
1. Metal Is Just Screaming and Noise
Ah yes, the classic complaint from yer nan or the lad who listens to beige-core Spotify playlists.
Reality check: metal vocals range from Bruce Dickinson’s operatic highs to Corey Taylorโs growls to Floor Jansenโs literal goddess pipes. Plus, have you heard Opeth? Tool? Gojira? Itโs not noiseโitโs art, butt. ๐ค๐ฅ
2. Metalheads Worship the Devil ๐
Letโs clear this up like a mosh pit parting for a circle pit:
No, Sharon, we donโt sacrifice goats on weekends. Satanic imagery is often theatrical, rebellious, or purely aesthetic. Itโs no more literal than horror films being murder tutorials.
(Unless weโre talking about Glen Bentonโฆ then maybe. ๐)
3. You Canโt Understand the Lyrics
Only if youโve got the listening skills of a turnip.
Sure, Cookie Monster vocals take some getting used to, but once your ears adjust, itโs as clear as a pint on a Friday night. And letโs be honestโno one ever understood Mick Jagger either, and he wasnโt growling.
4. All Metal Sounds the Same
Right, and all curry tastes the same too? Pull the other one, itโs got bells on!
From doom to deathcore, blackened thrash to prog metal, thereโs a whole buffet of brutality out there. Sleep and Babymetal are in the same genre? Behave.
5. Metal Encourages Violence
If anything, metal is cathartic. Itโs the reason weโre not punching walls or screaming at our bosses.
Mosh pits are controlled chaos, not bar fights. And most metalheads are soft as marshmallows when you meet โem. (Bonus points if they give you a hand up in the pit ๐ช)
6. Metal Is a Boysโ Club ๐ง๐งโโ๏ธ
Oh please.
Women have been slaying in metal since day oneโDoro, Lita Ford, Angela Gossow, Cristina Scabbia, Simone Simons, and loads more.
Plus, the new wave of metal queens is dominating. Anyone who says otherwise can take their gatekeeping elsewhere.
7. Metal Is Dead โ ๏ธ
Tell that to the 100,000 fans headbanging at Wacken. Or the Download mainstage crowd spilling into the car park.
Streaming, touring, vinyl, even TikTokโmetalโs more alive than a caffeinated Bruce Dickinson doing fencing on an airplane.
8. Metal Musicians Arenโt Talented
This one makes us want to throw a Les Paul into the sea.
Have you seen Tosin Abasi play? Or tried following a Dream Theater time signature without crying? Metal has some of the most technically gifted musicians on the planet. FACT.
9. Metal Fans Are Unwelcoming Elitists
Only if you walk in wearing a Coldplay shirt and say โIs this that death jazz?โ ๐
Most of us are just thrilled you want to talk riffs and swap stories. Metal fandom is one of the most accepting, diverse, and passionate communities out there. Just donโt slag off our favourite band, aye?
10. Black Clothes = Depression
Nah butt, we just like lookinโ like the inside of a Slayer album cover.
Black is practical, stylish, and doesnโt show beer stains. Metal fashion is expressionโnot a cry for help. We wear black because it matches the soul of our riffs (and our jeans).
11. Itโs All About Being Angry
Well, sometimes. But thereโs also love, loss, war, folklore, dragons, mental health, sci-fi, the environment, and straight-up fantasy epics.
Metal isnโt just angryโit’s deep, and sometimes even weirdly wholesome. Go listen to โBlood Brothersโ by Maiden and try not to get misty-eyed.
12. Itโs Just a Phase
Tell that to the 65-year-old legend crowd-surfing at a Judas Priest gig wearing a denim vest covered in patches older than you.
Metal isnโt a phase, itโs a lifelong commitment. Itโs in your bones, your playlists, your wardrobe, and your bloody ringtone.
Itโs a lifestyle. Itโs a family. Itโs forever. ๐ค
Final Riff:
Metal ainโt perfectโbut itโs proud, passionate, and powerful. So next time someone tells you itโs โjust noiseโ or โonly for Satanists,โ send โem this post and crank up Master of Puppets at full volume.
Cโmon butt โ letโs keep flying the horns and busting the myths, one riff at a time. ๐ธ๐ฅ๐ด
