The Godfather of Shock Rock has spoken… and AI music just got absolutely roasted.

If there was ever a musician you wouldn’t expect to sit quietly while robots start writing songs, it’s Alice Cooper.

The legendary shock rocker has taken aim at the growing trend of AI-generated music, dismissing it as soulless and lacking the very thing that makes music worth listening to in the first place.

And honestly? He didn’t exactly sugar-coat it.

Speaking about artificial intelligence creeping further into the music industry, Cooper made it clear that while computers might be able to imitate sounds, styles and songwriting formulas, they can never replace genuine human creativity.

His verdict?

“It has no emotion, heart or soul.”

Ouch.

🎤 THE MAN WHO INVENTED SHOCK ROCK ISN’T IMPRESSED

Alice Cooper has spent more than five decades terrifying parents, inspiring generations of rock stars and proving that rock ‘n’ roll is at its best when it’s unpredictable.

From guillotines and snakes to some of the biggest rock anthems ever recorded, Cooper’s entire career has been built on personality, creativity and genuine human expression.

That’s exactly why he believes AI-generated music misses the point.

For Cooper, music isn’t simply a collection of notes arranged in a pleasing order.

It’s about life experience.

It’s about heartbreak.

It’s about rebellion.

It’s about standing onstage in front of thousands of people and creating a moment that nobody will ever forget.

A machine can analyse those things.

But can it actually feel them?

That’s where Cooper says the technology falls flat.

🤖 THE AI MUSIC DEBATE IS GETTING LOUDER

Unless you’ve been living under a pile of old Kerrang! magazines for the past couple of years, you’ve probably noticed AI becoming one of the biggest talking points in music.

Artificial intelligence can already generate lyrics, compose songs, mimic famous voices and even create entire albums in seconds.

For some musicians, it’s an exciting creative tool.

For others, it’s a worrying glimpse into a future where computers begin replacing artists altogether.

The technology has advanced so quickly that some AI-generated tracks have fooled listeners into believing they were hearing genuine recordings from real artists.

That’s left many musicians asking difficult questions about ownership, originality and what creativity actually means.

And now Alice Cooper has added his voice to the growing debate.

🔥 ROCK MUSIC WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE PERFECT

One of the biggest criticisms of AI-generated music is that it often feels… well… too perfect.

Rock music has never been about perfection.

It’s about mistakes.

It’s about grit.

It’s about those magical moments where something unexpected happens and somehow makes a song even better.

Think about some of your favourite records.

The slightly out-of-time drum fills.

The rough vocal takes.

The guitar feedback.

The accidental moments that became iconic.

Those imperfections are often what give music its personality.

AI can replicate sounds.

It can imitate structures.

It can even mimic a style.

But it struggles to recreate genuine human spontaneity.

And that’s exactly what many rock fans treasure most.

🎸 MANY ROCK LEGENDS SHARE THE CONCERN

Cooper isn’t alone.

Across the rock and metal world, plenty of musicians have expressed concerns about the rise of AI.

Some fear artists could lose control of their own voices and identities.

Others worry that future generations may rely too heavily on technology instead of developing their own creative skills.

While few musicians are completely against technology, many argue there needs to be a clear line between using AI as a tool and allowing it to become the creator.

The concern isn’t necessarily about innovation.

It’s about preserving the human element that makes music meaningful.

🍻 IMAGINE AI TRYING TO WRITE A ROCK CLASSIC

Let’s be honest for a second, mun.

Could AI write a song called School’s Out?

Maybe.

Could it technically structure something that sounds similar?

Probably.

But could it capture the attitude, humour, chaos and cultural impact that made the original a rock anthem?

That’s a much tougher challenge.

Rock music has always reflected the people making it.

Their experiences.

Their frustrations.

Their dreams.

Their madness.

You can’t programme lived experience.

You can’t teach a computer what it feels like to play your first gig, get your heart broken, survive a nightmare tour bus journey or stand in a muddy festival field singing every word with thousands of strangers.

That’s the stuff that creates great music.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Whether you love AI, hate AI or still aren’t entirely sure what it actually does, Alice Cooper’s comments highlight a debate that’s only going to get bigger.

Technology will continue evolving.

AI will continue improving.

The music industry will continue experimenting.

But one thing remains true.

The greatest music moments happen when real people connect through real emotions.

That’s something rock music has always understood.

And judging by Alice Cooper’s comments, it’s something he has no intention of letting us forget.

Because at the end of the day, butt, riffs come from fingers.

Songs come from hearts.

And rock ‘n’ roll comes from souls.

Not servers.

Not algorithms.

Not robots.

Now excuse us while we go blast some Alice Cooper records and remind ourselves what actual human chaos sounds like. 🤘🔥🍻

💬 What Do You Think?

Should AI be welcomed into the music world as a creative tool?

Or should music remain a strictly human art form?

Let us know your thoughts, butt. The debate is only just getting started.

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
