Right, Riff Report crew… gather round the imaginary dry ice machine.
Europe’s mega-smash The Final Countdown is officially 40 years old.
Forty. Years. Old.
And somehow that opening synth riff still hits harder than a Steelhouse downpour on a white t-shirt. 😈🎹
🎹 THE RIFF THAT LAUNCHED A THOUSAND AIR KEYBOARDS
You don’t hear it.
You experience it.
That da-da-da-daaa, da-da-da-daaa intro is basically coded into human DNA at this point. Weddings. Boxing ring walkouts. Darts finals. Random blokes in pubs after three pints of Brains.
It’s not just a song — it’s an event.
When Europe dropped it in 1986 as the lead single from their third album, nobody could’ve predicted it would become one of the most iconic rock anthems ever recorded. But here we are. Four decades later. Still shouting it like our lives depend on it.
Proper lush stuff, mun. 🤘
🎤 JOEY TEMPEST MARKS THE MOMENT
Frontman Joey Tempest has shared a special message celebrating the 40-year milestone — reflecting on how this bombastic slice of synth-rock madness went from studio gamble to global stadium destroyer.
Imagine writing that riff and thinking, “Yeah, this’ll do.”
And then watching it conquer the planet.
That’s not just success. That’s rock immortality.
🌍 SWEDISH ROCKERS, GLOBAL TAKEOVER
Let’s not forget — Europe were Swedish lads with big dreams and even bigger hair.
They didn’t whisper their way into the charts.
They kicked the door down with shoulder pads and space-age keyboards.
MTV loved it.
Radio devoured it.
Crowds absolutely lost their minds.
And sure, the cool kids might’ve rolled their eyes at the theatrics. But here’s the thing about rock ‘n’ roll — subtlety doesn’t sell out arenas.
Swagger does.
🚀 WHY IT STILL SLAPS
Because it’s massive.
Because it’s dramatic.
Because it commits fully to the bit.
There’s no half-measures here. It sounds like it was written to soundtrack the launch of a rocket. Or the end of the world. Or a Cardiff City comeback in stoppage time.
It’s glorious excess. And rock needs that.
In a world obsessed with minimalism, The Final Countdown turns up wearing sequins and says, “Nah, mate.”
🎂 40 YEARS YOUNG AND STILL LOUD
Four decades on, that intro still sparks chaos in festival fields. It still makes dads relive their youth. It still unites entire crowds in one ridiculous, beautiful, fist-pumping moment.
That’s not nostalgia. That’s legacy.
So here’s to Europe.
Here’s to Joey.
Here’s to the riff that refuses to die.
Because if this is the final countdown…
We’re absolutely singing every word at full volume.
Proudly loud. Always. 🤘🔥🚀
