That is the bleak, powerful heart of What We Leave Behind, the new EP from Northern Ireland’s death/doom specialists The Crawling, due for release through Grindscene Records on 2 October 2026.
Built around memory, regret, nostalgia and our human obsession with glorifying the past, this is not a release interested in comforting the listener.
It’s here to drag you through the fog, point at all those memories you’ve polished into perfection and ask one uncomfortable question:

⚰️ “NOSTALGIA IS NOT A MEMORY; IT IS A MALIGNANCY”
That’s the line that hangs over What We Leave Behind like a storm cloud.
The idea is brutally simple.
The past changes every time we revisit it.
People become kinder in our memories.
Places become warmer.
Relationships become more meaningful.
Old wounds become strangely beautiful.
Before long, we’re not remembering the past at all.
We’re rebuilding it.
And if we spend too much time wandering around inside that reconstructed world, the present starts to disappear.
That’s where The Crawling step in.
Not with therapy.
With death/doom riffs.

🌑 FROM LISBURN INTO THE DARK
The Crawling formed in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, during the winter of 2014, and from the beginning they’ve operated in the darker corners of heavy music.
The band have built their reputation through music concerned with isolation, grief, loss, emotional damage and uncomfortable truths.
Across a catalogue featuring albums including Wolves And The Hideous White and 2023’s towering All Of This For Nothing, The Crawling have developed a sound recognisably rooted in death/doom while remaining distinctly their own.
There’s heaviness, obviously.
Loads of it.
But what separates The Crawling from plenty of bands occupying similar territory is the emotional honesty underneath.
These aren’t riffs thrown together because they sound miserable.
The misery means something.

🕰️ WHAT WE LEAVE BEHIND
The new EP continues that journey with one of the band’s most relatable concepts yet.
As guitarist and vocalist Andy Clarke explains:
“The EP is an acknowledgement that the past is behind us. We spend too long lamenting what has been, rather than being mindful of the present and the joy it can bring.”
He describes the constant mourning of time as “a sickness.”
And once you start thinking about it, he’s got a point.
People spend years longing for school days they apparently hated at the time.
Old relationships become perfect once the arguments are forgotten.
Festival veterans swear everything was better twenty years ago despite forgetting the overflowing toilets, collapsing tents and warm Carling.
Memory is a cheeky little liar, mun. 🍺😂
The Crawling take that universal experience and turn it into something far darker.
🔥 ‘A SONG TO NURSE THE SICKNESS’
The first track, ‘A Song To Nurse The Sickness’, arrives with formidable weight.
This is The Crawling doing what they do brilliantly.
Huge guitars.
Harsh vocals.
Melancholy melody.
Drums that feel less like percussion and more like the footsteps of something enormous slowly coming towards you.
Yet one of the song’s greatest strengths is what the band don’t do.
They leave space.
The arrangement is never cluttered simply for the sake of sounding massive.
The Crawling understand that silence, restraint and distance can be just as oppressive as distortion.
That gives every guitar note greater weight.
Every vocal line lands harder.
Every pause becomes uncomfortable.
And that’s exactly what this song needs.
🖤 WHEN REMEMBRANCE BECOMES ADDICTION
Lyrically, ‘A Song To Nurse The Sickness’ examines the moment where reflection stops being harmless.
Remembering becomes dwelling.
Dwelling becomes obsession.
Obsession becomes drowning.
It’s a frighteningly easy spiral.
We replay moments.
Imagine different outcomes.
Wonder what might have happened.
Think about people we’ve lost.
Think about versions of ourselves that don’t exist anymore.
The song doesn’t romanticise any of that.
It exposes it.
There’s no unnecessary decoration around the message.
The Crawling simply place the truth in front of you and let it sit there.
Heavy music doesn’t always need theatrics.
Sometimes honesty hits harder than pyro.
🎸 ‘BOUND TO THE NEGATIVE (REQUIEM)’
Then comes something completely different.
‘Bound To The Negative (Requiem)’ revisits one of the standout tracks from All Of This For Nothing.
But this isn’t merely the original song played quietly.
It’s been rebuilt.
Reimagined.
Reborn.
The new acoustic arrangement strips away the aggression and reveals melodies that were hiding beneath the original’s heavier exterior.
There’s an almost medieval quality running through parts of the track.
It feels ancient.
Mournful.
Like something being sung across the ruins of a forgotten place.
And that transformation fits the EP’s concept beautifully.
🕯️ SAME PAST. DIFFERENT MEMORY.
Here’s where things get particularly clever.
‘Bound To The Negative’ hasn’t fundamentally changed its meaning.
The events behind the song haven’t changed.
The emotional truth remains.
But the way we’re experiencing it has been altered completely.
Sound familiar?
That’s memory.
We revisit something.
We reinterpret it.
We add new emotional context.
We see it differently because we’re different.
The past remains where it always was.
We’re the ones changing it.
That makes ‘Bound To The Negative (Requiem)’ more than a simple alternate version.
It becomes part of the EP’s philosophy.
And that’s proper tidy songwriting. 🖤
⚰️ HEAVINESS ISN’T ALWAYS LOUD
Metal sometimes becomes obsessed with measurements.
How low is the tuning?
How massive is the breakdown?
How fast is the double kick?
How many amps can we fit on stage before the sound engineer starts crying?
But emotional heaviness can’t be measured that way.
And this reimagined version of ‘Bound To The Negative’ proves it.
Removing distortion doesn’t remove power.
If anything, the lack of sonic armour makes the track feel more exposed.
Every melody hangs in the air.
Every emotional detail becomes visible.
It’s not heavy because it’s loud.
It’s heavy because it hurts.
🥁 THE SOUND OF THE CRAWLING
The drums for the EP were recorded at The Parlour Recording Studios, a facility associated with names including The Haunted, At The Gates and Napalm Death.
Everything else — including the remaining recording, mixing and mastering — was handled in-house.
The result is unmistakably The Crawling.
Nothing sounds overly polished.
Nothing feels unnecessarily manipulated.
The instruments have room.
The vocals remain commanding.
The production serves the songs instead of trying to become the star.
For music this emotionally direct, that’s exactly the right approach.
🎨 ARTWORK FROM REDAMAUT
The EP is completed visually by artwork from Redamaut, whose previous credits include Perpetual Paradox, Mother Crone and Altar Of Moss.
And that matters because The Crawling’s music has always felt cinematic.

🎸 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT
What We Leave Behind may be brief, but there’s nothing slight about it.
The Crawling have created a release about the dangerous comfort of nostalgia — the way memories can become more attractive than reality, and the way looking backwards too often can prevent us from noticing the life happening right bloody now.
Musically, the EP demonstrates two different forms of heaviness.
‘A Song To Nurse The Sickness’ crushes through death/doom weight and bleak atmosphere.
‘Bound To The Negative (Requiem)’ strips almost everything away and discovers another kind of devastation underneath.
Together they form a fascinating little statement about memory.
We rewrite the past constantly.
But no matter how many times we alter the lighting, change the soundtrack or soften the edges…
what happened still happened.
That’s uncomfortable.
That’s bleak.
That’s very, very The Crawling.
