(aka: When Legends Gatecrash the Stage and Blow Our Socks Off, Mun)

Letโ€™s be honest, thereโ€™s nothing more glorious than a surprise guest crashing a rock gig or metal set. Youโ€™re vibinโ€™ in the crowd, sipping warm lager, and suddenlyโ€”BOOM! Slash walks on. Halford belts a note. Dave Grohl appears like some drum-wielding wizard from the fog.
Itโ€™s enough to make your past self say, “What the ACTUAL hell is occurring?!” ๐Ÿคฏ

Weโ€™ve compiled 12 of the most legendary guest performances to ever grace stages and studiosโ€”those “did that really happen?” moments that live rent-free in our minds (and playlists). Strap in, cโ€™mon butt, weโ€™re going in loud!

๐Ÿฅ‰12. Brian May Joins Foo Fighters โ€“ Wembley Stadium, 2008

๐ŸŽธ Track: โ€œTie Your Mother Downโ€ (Queen cover)

The Foo Fighters were already tearing up Wembley like it was their backyard BBQ. Then out stroll Brian Mayโ€”axe in hand, hair like a lion, ready to melt faces. Roger Taylor jumps on drums, and suddenly weโ€™re in full-on Queen mode. Hawkins called Brian โ€œthe greatest guitarist of all timeโ€โ€”and he wasnโ€™t wrong, was he?

Moment of madness: When Hawkins, Grohl, May and Taylor took over that stadium, it stopped being a concert and started being a royal coronation in rock.

๐Ÿฅ‰11. Slash with Michael Jackson โ€“ 1995 MTV VMAs

๐ŸŽฉ Track: โ€œBlack or Whiteโ€ / โ€œBeat Itโ€ mash-up

This one had the energy of a bad idea… but delivered like a fever dream. Slash busts in with THE guitar tone, looking like he just fell out of a Guns N’ Roses tour bus and nailed the solo anyway. MJ moonwalks around him. Itโ€™s like Chuck Berry and Broadway had a baby.

Iconic because: No one expected Slash to be upstaging the King of Pop, but that Les Paul spoke louder than words.

๐Ÿฅ‰10. Bruce Dickinson Joins Halford and Geoff Tate โ€“ Rock in Rio, 2000

โš”๏ธ Track: โ€œThe One You Love to Hateโ€

This wasnโ€™t a guest spotโ€”it was a vocal battle royal. Three of metalโ€™s mightiest frontmen screaming their lungs out together? Yes, please. Bruce soared like a Spitfire. Halford shrieked like a banshee. Tate crooned like a pissed-off phantom.

Goosebump level: Nuclear. This was a rare holy trinity of vocal power that had mosh pits collectively saying, “I need a sit-down.”

๐Ÿฅ‰9. James Hetfield & Lars Ulrich with Mercyful Fate โ€“ San Francisco, 1993

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Track: โ€œReturn of the Vampireโ€ & โ€œSatanโ€™s Fallโ€

If you were in that crowd, you hit the black metal jackpot. Hetfield on vocals. Ulrich pounding the kit. King Diamond cackling like a demonic opera villain. It was evil, it was epic, it was underground history in the making.

Only in San Fran, mun… This kind of metal magic donโ€™t just happen anywhere.

๐Ÿฅ‰8. Ronnie James Dio with Tenacious D โ€“ Madison Square Garden, 2006

๐ŸŒˆ Track: โ€œDioโ€

You write a tribute song to a metal godโ€ฆ then the metal god shows up to sing it with you? Dio joined The D live, and it was like Gandalf had entered the pit. The power, the vocals, the sheer cheek of it. Glorious.

Shout it with us: โ€œDIOOOOOOOO CAN YOU HEAR ME?!โ€

๐Ÿฅ‰7. Axl Rose Joins AC/DC โ€“ Rock or Bust Tour, 2016

โšก Track: Entire tour

When Brian Johnson had to step back, fans feared the worst. But Axl bloody Rose showed up, sat his broken leg on Dave Grohlโ€™s borrowed throne, and absolutely belted through the AC/DC catalogue like heโ€™d been born in a coal mine. The world expected a trainwreckโ€”and got a thunderous resurrection.

Result: The snarl of GNR met the stomp of AC/DC, and it was beautiful mayhem.

๐Ÿฅˆ6. Eddie Van Halenโ€™s Solo on โ€œBeat Itโ€ โ€“ Michael Jackson, 1983

๐ŸŽš๏ธ Track: โ€œBeat Itโ€ (studio recording)

Itโ€™s the solo. The one that made kids want to pick up a guitar and play until their fingers bled. Eddie reportedly did it for free and blew the roof off one of the biggest pop songs of all time. You can thank him for every pop-metal crossover that followed.

No Eddie = No โ€œBeat Itโ€ as we know it. Absolute fact.

๐Ÿฅˆ5. Rob Halford Joins Babymetal โ€“ AP Music Awards, 2016

๐ŸฆŠ Track: โ€œPainkillerโ€ / โ€œBreaking the Lawโ€

The Metal God meets Japanโ€™s kawaii-metal queens. On paper, it sounds insane. On stage? It was glorious chaos. Halford headbanging with choreographed schoolgirls in leather and spikes. The crowd looked confusedโ€”and then completely sold.

Proof: Metal has no borders. Just riffs.

๐Ÿฅˆ4. Lemmy with Foo Fighters โ€“ VH1 Rock Honors, 2006

โšฐ๏ธ Track: โ€œShake Your Bloodโ€

Lemmy didnโ€™t do “guest spots” โ€“ he conquered. When he joined Foo Fighters for this knuckle-dragging banger, he didnโ€™t just front the bandโ€”he owned the whole damn stage. Growling through the mic like a warlord on bourbon.

Lemmyโ€™s rule: Show up, plug in, shake the planet.

๐Ÿฅˆ3. Dave Grohl Drums for Queens of the Stone Age โ€“ Songs for the Deaf, 2002

๐Ÿฅ Track: Entire album

If drumming had a cheat code, Dave Grohl is it. On this cult classic, he wasnโ€™t a guestโ€”he was an avalanche. Every fill, every thump, every swing of the sticks made this album iconic. Grohl made drums sexy again. Fact.

Start with: โ€œNo One Knows.โ€ Then keep going until your neighbours complain.

๐Ÿฅˆ2. Freddie Mercury & David Bowie โ€“ โ€œUnder Pressureโ€

๐ŸŒ Track: Studio & rehearsal

Did they perform it live together often? Nah. Do we care? Absolutely not. Because the song and the rehearsal footage are immortal. Freddieโ€™s fire. Bowieโ€™s cool. Itโ€™s two titans circling each other, daring the other to go harder. And they did.

Literal pressure: They wrote it in one night. Thatโ€™s not just geniusโ€”thatโ€™s criminally smooth.

๐Ÿฅ‡1. Metallica & Lady Gaga โ€“ Grammys, 2017

๐Ÿ”ฅ Track: โ€œMoth Into Flameโ€

Yes, the mic cut out. Yes, James Hetfield got tamping and kicked a mic stand. But this? This was iconic. Gaga proved she could hang with the biggest metal band in the worldโ€”and then some. The fire. The hair flips. The unapologetic swagger. People laughed. People complained. But it ruled.

Rock nโ€™ roll rule #1: When things go wrong, crank it harder. Gaga did just that.

๐Ÿ… Honourable Mentions

  • Elton John x Ozzy โ€“ โ€œOrdinary Manโ€ (the soft side of darkness)
  • Chris Cornell with Linkin Park (tears guaranteed)
  • Dimebag posthumously on Nickelbackโ€™s โ€œSide of a Bulletโ€ (weird, but powerful)
  • Corey Taylor + Apocalyptica โ€“ โ€œIโ€™m Not Jesusโ€ (strings + screams = lush chaos)
  • Tom Morello on everything โ€“ seriously, pick a track, heโ€™s on it.

๐ŸŽค Final Riff:

Guest spots arenโ€™t just โ€œnice extras.โ€ Theyโ€™re earth-shaking, crowd-pleasing, history-making moments that make rock โ€˜nโ€™ metal the glorious mess it is. Whether itโ€™s Dio turning up for a laugh or Gaga melting faces at the Grammys, these crossovers are the lifeblood of the scene. They keep it mad, loud, and proper tidy.

So next time you’re at a gig and someone unexpected walks on stage, just do what we all do:
๐Ÿ‘‡
Throw your horns up, lose your voice, and yellโ€”

โ€œYESS MUN, GET IN!โ€

Michael

Michael

๐ŸŽธ About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise โ€” it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publicationโ€™s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist โ€” sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
