Alright butt, strap in and grab a pint, ‘cause we’re about to dive headlong into one of the most divisive, fiery, and downright misunderstood eras of Iron Maiden’s long reign. Yep – we’re talking the Blaze Bayley years.

The period where Eddie donned football boots, Steve Harris poured his heart into moody epics, and the fanbase split like Moses parting the Red Sea. Some cried “sacrilege!” while others whispered, “Actually mun, this stuff slaps.”

Now, three decades on, Steve Harris has gone on record once again defending The X Factor (1995) and Virtual XI(1998), calling them “strong, powerful albums”. And you know what? Maybe it’s time we gave ‘em a fair hearing.

⚔️ Setting the Scene: Maiden in the Mid-90s

By 1993, Bruce Dickinson had jumped ship, leaving Harris, Murray, Smith, Gers, and McBrain with a massive problem: who the hell can front Iron Maiden?

Enter Blaze Bayley, ex-Wolfsbane frontman. A gruffer, deeper voice, not Dickinson’s soaring air raid siren – but a working-class metalhead who could belt it out with passion. The choice was bold. Brave. Maybe even bonkers.

The 90s weren’t kind to metal either. Grunge ruled the airwaves, nu-metal was lurking in the wings, and traditional heavy metal was seen (wrongly!) as yesterday’s news. Maiden didn’t just need to survive – they had to reinvent.

💿 The X Factor (1995): Maiden Goes Gothic

Recorded in the wake of Harris’ marriage breakdown, this album drips with pain and atmosphere. It’s Maiden’s darkest hour – both emotionally and musically.

Standouts?

  • “Sign of the Cross” – A 11-minute behemoth that later became a live classic even in Bruce’s second era. Moody, theatrical, and spine-chilling.
  • “Lord of the Flies” – Inspired by the novel, with a brooding riff and Blaze sounding utterly feral.
  • “Man on the Edge” – Blaze’s most iconic moment, inspired by the Michael Douglas flick Falling Down. A frantic anthem that still gets dusted off live.

Yes, it’s slower, doomier, even depressive. But that’s its power. Harris wasn’t faking it – this was the raw sound of a man in turmoil.

💿 Virtual XI (1998): Football, Futures, and The Clansman

On paper, this should’ve been Maiden’s big comeback. A brighter, faster record compared to The X Factor, with a cheeky tie-in to their Ed Hunter video game. But the critics weren’t convinced.

Highlights though?

  • “Futureal” – A speed-metal sprint, proving Blaze could bring fire to faster tracks.
  • “The Clansman” – Forget Braveheart memes – this is a true Maiden epic. So good Bruce still belts it today with fists in the air. Freedom!
  • “When Two Worlds Collide” – An underrated gem with a massive chorus.

Was it patchy? Sure. Did it flop commercially? Kinda. But the spirit of experimentation and resilience is undeniable.

🏟️ The Blaze Years on Tour

Here’s where things got messy. Blaze often struggled live – not because he couldn’t sing, but because he was asked to match Bruce’s impossible vocal range on classics like “Run to the Hills.” The poor bloke was set up to fail in some fans’ eyes.

But when he was in his zone (“Sign of the Cross,” “Man on the Edge”), Blaze had an intensity and grit that was pure working-class metal.

🎸 Steve Harris: Loyal to the Core

Fast-forward to today, and while many fans still slag off this era, Harris remains staunch. He’s repeatedly said those albums are underrated, powerful statements – and he’s not wrong.

For him, The X Factor was catharsis. Virtual XI was Maiden trying to push forward in tough times. They weren’t just “stopgap” albums – they were true Iron Maiden.

And let’s be honest – if Maiden hadn’t kept going with Blaze, we might never have got the triumphant Dickinson reunion of Brave New World in 2000. These albums kept Eddie alive through the storm.

🤘 Why It’s Time to Revisit These Albums

  • Cult Status: Tracks like “Sign of the Cross” and “The Clansman” are now staples in Maiden lore.
  • Unique Atmosphere: Darker, moodier, unlike anything else in the Maiden catalogue.
  • Blaze Deserves Respect: He walked into one of the hardest jobs in metal and gave it everything.

So next time you spin up your Maiden playlist, don’t skip these albums, mun. Crank up “Futureal,” let “Sign of the Cross” wash over you, and raise a pint to the era that nearly broke Maiden – but somehow made them stronger. 🍻

🕶️ Final Word

The Blaze years will always divide fans. But Steve Harris calling them “strong, powerful albums” isn’t nostalgia talking – it’s the truth of a band who refused to quit.

Iron Maiden’s story isn’t just about the hits, the Number Ones, and the stadium triumphs. It’s about survival, grit, and going through hell to come back even louder.

And that, tidy people of rock, is metal AF. 🤘🔥

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
