Band: Sorcery
Album: The Immaculate Sin
Label: Xtreem Music
Release Date: 1 October 2026
Genre: Death Metal
For Fans Of: Entombed | Dismember | Edge Of Sanity | Centinex

Some bands play old-school Swedish death metal.

Sorcery helped bloody well invent the stuff. 💀🇸🇪

More than four decades after first crawling from Sweden’s underground, these death metal veterans are preparing to unleash another slab of chainsaw-riffed brutality with The Immaculate Sin, arriving through Xtreem Music on 1 October 2026.

And judging by what Sorcery have cooked up here, nobody appears to have told them they’re supposed to mellow with age.

Quite the opposite.

The Immaculate Sin promises a relentless trip straight back into the graveyard fog of early-‘90s Swedish death metal — only armed with the experience, production power and murderous confidence of musicians who’ve spent decades perfecting this particular form of sonic violence.

Stick the kettle on.

Actually, sod the kettle.

Get the neck brace ready. 🤘

💀 FOUR DECADES OF SWEDISH DEATH METAL

To understand why a new Sorcery album matters, you’ve got to rewind more than 40 years.

The band’s first demo, Arrival, emerged during the formative years of what would become one of heavy metal’s most influential underground movements.

Swedish death metal wasn’t yet a nostalgic genre with vintage T-shirts and collectors fighting over original vinyl pressings.

It was happening.

Sorcery were there.

Further demos and a rehearsal recording followed before the band released the now-infamous Rivers Of The Dead single in 1990.

Then came the big one.

In 1991, Sorcery unleashed their debut album Bloodchilling Tales.

The record would go on to become recognised as a cult classic of Swedish death metal, placing Sorcery alongside a generation of musicians whose distorted guitars, rotten atmosphere and uncompromising brutality would permanently alter extreme music.

We’re talking the same glorious swamp that produced names such as Entombed and Dismember.

Everything should have been pointing upwards.

Unfortunately, death metal bands have one natural predator even more dangerous than mainstream radio.

Line-up changes.

⚰️ INTO HIBERNATION

Constant personnel changes eventually took their toll, and by 1997, Sorcery slipped into hibernation.

For more than a decade, the beast slept.

Then, in 2009, something started moving underneath the soil.

Sorcery returned.

And this wasn’t simply a nostalgia exercise designed to dust off a few old songs and flog some shirts.

After signing with Xtreem Music, the second chapter of Sorcery’s career truly kicked into gear with Arrival At Six in 2013.

Three years later came Garden Of Bones in 2016, followed by the vicious Necessary Excess Of Violence in 2019.

The message was becoming pretty obvious:

Sorcery weren’t back for a victory lap.

They were back because there was still death metal to make.

And now comes The Immaculate Sin.

🌑 ‘SHADOWBORN’ – OPEN THE CRYPT

The album wastes precious little time establishing its intentions.

Opening track ‘Shadowborn’ begins with a sinister guitar motif, creating just enough tension to make you wonder what’s lurking behind the door.

Then Sorcery kick the bloody thing off its hinges.

💥 BANG.

The track explodes into a rampaging death metal assault built around the characteristics that helped make the Swedish sound legendary in the first place.

Huge guitars.

Punishing drums.

Filthy atmosphere.

Riffs seemingly dragged through a cemetery backwards.

There’s no gentle introduction.

No cinematic three-minute ambient prelude while everyone checks their phones.

We’re straight into the violence, butt.

🪚 ‘SET THE WORLD ABLAZE’ – FETCH THE CHAINSAW

If you’re coming to Swedish death metal, there’s one thing you want.

That guitar sound.

You know the one.

The chainsaw.

And ‘Set The World Ablaze’ appears more than happy to provide it.

The guitars grind while skull-cracking drums drive everything forwards with the subtlety of an articulated lorry entering your living room.

But that’s what makes this style so addictive.

Great death metal isn’t simply about being ridiculously heavy.

There has to be a riff buried inside the carnage.

Something memorable.

Something that makes your neck move involuntarily.

Sorcery understand that because they’ve been doing it since the genre’s formative years.

The production may belong to 2026.

The soul belongs in a damp Swedish rehearsal room somewhere around 1991.

And we mean that as the highest possible compliment. 🤘

🔪 ‘SLICE IT UP’ – EXACTLY AS FRIENDLY AS IT SOUNDS

Then there’s a song called ‘Slice It Up’.

Which, you’ll be shocked to learn, isn’t Sorcery experimenting with acoustic folk.

This thing comes loaded with killer intent and riffs sharpened to a frankly irresponsible level.

Throughout The Immaculate Sin, Sorcery maintain that unmistakable early Swedish death metal atmosphere without sounding like they’re simply cosplaying their younger selves.

That’s important.

There’s a huge difference between old-school and old-fashioned.

Sorcery’s roots are obvious, but the aggression remains alive.

These songs aren’t museum exhibits.

They’re designed to hit.

Hard.

👹 ‘THE EXORCIST’ – THE VIOLENCE ESCALATES

Rather than running out of steam towards the end, The Immaculate Sin apparently becomes even nastier.

‘The Exorcist’ brings enormous hooks alongside the band’s crushing heaviness, creating one of those wonderful extreme-metal combinations where something can be utterly brutal and strangely catchy at the same time.

That’s where decades of songwriting experience begin showing.

Anyone can turn the gain up.

Anyone can play fast.

Anyone can make an absolute racket.

Writing death metal that makes you want to immediately hit replay?

That’s the difficult bit.

And Sorcery know exactly how to bury hooks underneath the corpses.

⚔️ ‘DIE IN RETRIBUTION’ – ONE FINAL ACT OF VIOLENCE

Eventually we reach the grand finale.

‘Die In Retribution’.

And Sorcery aren’t slipping quietly out the back door.

Instead, the track combines melody and brute force, bringing The Immaculate Sin towards its conclusion with one final reminder of why Swedish death metal became such a globally influential force.

Melody doesn’t soften the attack.

It strengthens it.

Atmosphere doesn’t replace brutality.

It makes the brutality more effective.

After decades in the game, Sorcery clearly understand the balance.

And Die In Retribution sounds positioned to deliver one suitably massive final blow.

🎚️ BUILT LIKE A DEATH METAL WAR MACHINE

The sonic weight behind The Immaculate Sin hasn’t happened by accident.

Sorcery worked with experienced producer and engineer William Blackmon, whose credits include work involving Isole, Scar Symmetry and Human Cull, across the recording process.

The goal?

A sound capable of maintaining Sorcery’s filthy old-school identity while giving every riff, drum strike and guttural roar enough force to punch through modern speakers.

Because Swedish death metal should never sound too clean.

You don’t want this stuff polished until you can see your reflection in it.

It needs dirt under its fingernails.

It needs rust.

It needs to smell vaguely like something died behind the amplifier six months ago and nobody has been brave enough to investigate.

That’s the good stuff. 💀

🎨 DEATH METAL SHOULD LOOK LIKE DEATH METAL

Then there’s the artwork.

Sorcery have enlisted Juanjo Castellano Rosado, whose previous credits include Revel In Flesh, Paganizer and Vomitory.

Which means we’re safely away from minimalist beige squares with tiny Helvetica lettering.

Thank Satan for that. 😂

The artwork has been created to complement the album’s atmosphere — a full-on celebration of death metal damnation matching the sonic carnage contained within.

As it bloody well should.

Sometimes you should be able to look at an album cover and immediately think:

“Yep. Absolutely no ukuleles on this one.”

💀 SORCERY – LINE-UP

The current Sorcery line-up sees:

Ola Malmström – Vocals
Paul Johansson – Guitar
Johan Vikholm – Guitar
Tommy Holmer – Drums
Mikael Carlsson – Bass

Five musicians carrying forward a band whose roots stretch directly into the foundations of the Swedish death metal movement.

That’s some serious history.

💿 THE IMMACULATE SIN – RELEASE DETAILS

Sorcery’s The Immaculate Sin will be unleashed through Xtreem Music on 1 October 2026.

Physical-format maniacs are well catered for too.

The album will be available on:

  • CD
  • 12-inch LP
  • Cassette
  • Digital

Yes, cassette again.

Death metal simply refuses to let that little plastic rectangle die.

And frankly, we respect the commitment. 😂🤘

🇸🇪 SWEDISH DEATH METAL IS STILL UNDEAD

There’s something brilliant about bands from the original waves of extreme metal refusing to become heritage acts.

Sorcery could quite easily spend their time celebrating Bloodchilling Tales.

They’ve earned that right.

But more than 40 years after their earliest recordings, they’re still making new music.

Still chasing heavier riffs.

Still finding darker corners.

Still contributing to the scene they helped create.

That matters.

Because Swedish death metal isn’t simply something that happened three decades ago.

Its influence runs throughout modern extreme metal.

And whenever those filthy chainsaw guitars roar into life, you can still hear the DNA of that original Swedish underground.

Sorcery aren’t merely preserving that sound.

They’re keeping it dangerous.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

If The Immaculate Sin proves anything, it’s that age hasn’t dulled Sorcery’s appetite for destruction.

Everything described about this record points towards an album drenched in the atmosphere that made Swedish death metal legendary — chainsaw guitars, relentless drumming, cavernous vocals, graveyard atmosphere and riffs capable of separating skull from spine.

But crucially, this doesn’t sound like a band attempting to recreate 1991.

Sorcery were already there.

They don’t need to imitate the past.

They helped build it.

From Arrival and Rivers Of The Dead through Bloodchilling Tales, their long hibernation and eventual resurrection, Sorcery have survived long enough to watch the music they helped pioneer become an international institution.

Now they’re preparing to throw another corpse onto the pile.

The Immaculate Sin arrives 1 October 2026.

More than four decades after Sorcery first entered Sweden’s underground…

the chainsaw is still running. 🪚💀🔥

🎸 RIFF REPORT ANTICIPATION RATING: 🎸🎸🎸🎸½ / 5

Old-school Swedish death metal. No polish. No mercy. No bloody surrender.

Turn it up, mun.

Death isn’t dead yet. 💀🤘🇸🇪

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Zero Apologies.

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
