There are few frontmen in modern rock as captivating โ€” or as mysterious โ€” as Tobias Forge, the Swedish mastermind behind Ghost.
Heโ€™s the satanic showman who turned church rituals into rock theatre, a chameleon-like performer whoโ€™s hidden behind masks, mitres and makeup for over a decade.

But one fateful night in Leeds, that carefully constructed faรงade cracked โ€” and beneath the latex and leather, Tobias Forge had a very human moment of terror. A panic attack so severe it changed not only how he performs, but how he breathes, moves, and even how Ghost themselves design their entire stage experience.

โ€œAll of a sudden I was like, โ€˜I need to know where the door is… stop! Get the mask off!โ€™โ€ Forge revealed.

It wasnโ€™t an act. It wasnโ€™t stage fright. It was real fear โ€” the kind that makes your heart pound and your lungs feel like theyโ€™re being crushed from the inside. And for the man whoโ€™s built an empire around theatrical control, it was the last thing he ever expected.

๐ŸŽญ THE NIGHT THE DARK LORD GASPED FOR AIR

Letโ€™s rewind to that Leeds show โ€” a packed arena, roaring crowd, smoke machines pumping like hellfire, lights flashing like a ritual gone wrong. Ghost were mid-set, in full costume. Tobias, performing as Papa Emeritus IV, was drenched in sweat beneath his ornate mask and layered robes.

And thenโ€ฆ something shifted.

โ€œIt just hit me,โ€ Forge said later. โ€œMy heart started racing, I couldnโ€™t get enough air. Suddenly, I wasnโ€™t Tobias Forge or Papa โ€” I was just a guy trapped in a mask trying to breathe.โ€

For a moment, the veil between performance and reality ripped wide open.
Crew members later said they saw him signal urgently, breaking character โ€” a rare sight for fans used to Ghostโ€™s perfectly polished shows.

Forge admits he barely remembers finishing the set. โ€œIt was autopilot,โ€ he said. โ€œI was counting down songs, trying not to rip the thing off my face in front of 10,000 people.โ€

After the show, the band cleared the dressing room and Tobias sat alone, mask off, drenched, shaking. Thatโ€™s when he made a promise to himself โ€” and to the future of Ghost.

โš–๏ธ THE RULE THAT SAVED HIS SANITY

That Leeds night gave birth to a strict new rule:

โ€œEvery mask, every costume from now on has to let me breathe,โ€ Tobias declared.

No more endurance tests disguised as art. No more panic waiting in the wings.

He brought in new designers, engineers, and even consulted medical experts to ensure that Ghostโ€™s masks โ€” from the intricate Papa Emeritus IV look to the Nameless Ghoulsโ€™ metallic faceless visors โ€” allowed full airflow and comfort.

โ€œI realised weโ€™d been designing for the look, not the feel,โ€ he said. โ€œThatโ€™s fine for a photo shoot, but when youโ€™re two hours deep into a show, sweating, singing, running aroundโ€ฆ itโ€™s a different world.โ€

Now every stage costume goes through โ€œreal-world testingโ€ โ€” theyโ€™re worn during rehearsals, lighting checks, and long sessions to make sure Tobias can move and perform safely.

And while Ghost still look unholy as hell, Forge says the key change has been invisible:
โ€œFans shouldnโ€™t notice. But I should be able to breathe.โ€

๐Ÿ˜ˆ THE PRESSURE BEHIND THE PAPA

Forgeโ€™s struggle isnโ€™t unique. Many masked rockers have shared tales of discomfort or panic beneath their alter-egos โ€” from Slipknotโ€™s suffocating masks to GWARโ€™s monstrous armour. But for Tobias, there was an added psychological layer.

Each Papa Emeritus is a character โ€” a persona he must embody with total conviction. Forge has said that when he puts on the mask, he becomes someone else. But what happens when that mask becomes a cage?

โ€œYou get into a trance when you perform as Papa. You stop being yourself. But that night in Leeds, I snapped out of it โ€” and I didnโ€™t like how that felt.โ€

For years, Ghostโ€™s shows have been carefully choreographed โ€” part mass, part musical, part metal opera. But that pressure to maintain character, to deliver perfection every night, takes a toll.

The Leeds panic attack was, in a way, a rebellion โ€” not against the music, but against the expectation to be superhuman.

๐Ÿ’€ MASKS, METAL & MENTAL HEALTH

This isnโ€™t just a story about a rock star gasping for air. Itโ€™s about what happens when art, identity, and health collide.

Forge has always been open about the balance between his creative vision and his personal wellbeing. Since the Leeds incident, heโ€™s taken more control over his schedule, spacing out tours, prioritising rest, and talking openly about anxiety.

โ€œThe mask isnโ€™t supposed to hide me โ€” itโ€™s supposed to transform me,โ€ he said. โ€œBut that night it became a reminder that Iโ€™m still human.โ€

Heโ€™s not alone. Artists like Corey Taylor (Slipknot) and Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) have spoken about similar experiences โ€” the overwhelming physical and emotional intensity of performance triggering panic or exhaustion mid-show.

But for Tobias, the difference was that his entire identity on stage was literally built around a mask. To lose control in that moment was to face his worst nightmare: the illusion breaking down in front of his congregation.

๐Ÿ”ฅ REBORN FROM PANIC

Hereโ€™s the kicker: out of that terrifying night came some of Ghostโ€™s strongest performances.
Forge channelled that panic into purpose. The result? A new era of Ghost โ€” one more grounded, precise, and powerful than ever.

2023โ€™s Impera tour showed a band at their peak: dazzling visuals, laser-precise transitions, and Forge performing with ease and freedom. Fans noticed a change โ€” Papa IV seemed looser, funnier, more connected.

โ€œI realised I could be commanding without being crushed,โ€ he said. โ€œOnce I stopped fearing the mask, it became a tool again โ€” not a burden.โ€

In other words, Tobias took back control of his stage presence. And for a band built on theatrical chaos, thatโ€™s no small feat.

๐ŸŽฅ THE MASK EVOLUTION: FROM SATANIC OPERA TO MODERN COMFORT

Letโ€™s take a look at how Tobias and his team have evolved those iconic Ghost masks since that fateful Leeds show:

EraMask / LookKey Design NotesComfort Factor (Post-Leeds)
Papa Emeritus I (2010โ€“2012)Classic skeletal popeHeavy prosthetics, latex, limited airflowโŒ Suffocating
Papa Emeritus II (2013โ€“2015)Refined and regalSlightly lighter, still hot under lightsโš ๏ธ Improved but still restrictive
Papa Emeritus III (2015โ€“2017)Gold-trimmed, theatricalCustom-moulded fit, vented nose areaโœ… Moderate comfort
Cardinal Copia (2018โ€“2020)Prosthetic face, eye makeupEasier breathing, less coverageโœ…โœ… Much better
Papa Emeritus IV (2021โ€“present)Hybrid of mask and makeupRemovable sections, airflow designโœ…โœ…โœ… Designed with panic in mind

Forge said he even added emergency release points on newer versions โ€” small latches that can be undone in seconds. โ€œIf I ever feel that rising again, I can get out,โ€ he said.

Thatโ€™s not just rock โ€™nโ€™ roll โ€” thatโ€™s survival. ๐Ÿ’€

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ GHOST SHOWS: STILL THE MOST UNHOLY PARTY IN ROCK

Despite that brush with panic, Ghostโ€™s shows have only become bigger, bolder, and more theatrical. The Leeds lesson didnโ€™t make Tobias play it safe โ€” it made him smarter.

These days, every show is precision-engineered: costume changes, lighting cues, fan interactions, and comedic moments all woven together. Forgeโ€™s new comfort rule hasnโ€™t dampened the spectacle โ€” itโ€™s made it more alive.

โ€œThe more relaxed I am, the better the show,โ€ he said. โ€œPeople think you need to suffer for art. I say: bollocks. You can breathe and bring hellfire.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

And fans can feel that confidence radiating off him. When he struts across the stage in full Papa IV garb, flicking his cane and blessing the crowd, itโ€™s pure charisma โ€” not claustrophobia.

๐Ÿฉธ WHEN THE STAGE BECOMES A CHURCH

For Forge, every show is a sermon โ€” not just a gig. But that Leeds night changed what those sermons mean. Heโ€™s since spoken about wanting Ghost concerts to be inclusive, safe spaces for fans and performers alike.

โ€œYou come to a Ghost show to escape,โ€ he said. โ€œI want everyone, including me, to feel safe doing that.โ€

Thatโ€™s why youโ€™ll often see him break the fourth wall now โ€” cracking jokes, chatting to the crowd, even blessing fans with mock holy water. Those lighter moments arenโ€™t just for show โ€” theyโ€™re part of how Tobias keeps grounded on stage.

Itโ€™s still rock theatre, but now with a heartbeat you can actually hear. โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿค˜ THE HUMAN BEHIND THE HELLFIRE

Tobias Forge has always been a paradox โ€” a private person who plays the most public, flamboyant role imaginable.

The panic attack didnโ€™t destroy the illusion; it humanised it. Fans rallied around him, praising his honesty and the changes he made.

โ€œHe could have hidden it,โ€ said one fan after a 2023 show. โ€œBut instead he used it to make Ghost better. Thatโ€™s proper job, that is.โ€

Heโ€™s not the first frontman to face this. But he might be one of the few who turned that vulnerability into part of the mythos.

Ghost has always thrived on duality โ€” light and dark, holy and unholy, human and demonic.
Now, thanks to that Leeds night, thereโ€™s another layer: strength through struggle.

๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ THE LEGACY OF A PANIC ATTACK

Five years on, Forge still remembers that Leeds show vividly. Heโ€™s since laughed about it, calling it his โ€œmost un-metal moment,โ€ but the lessons have stuck.

Heโ€™s even joked that Ghostโ€™s next mask design might come with a built-in fan or an escape hatch. โ€œIf Darth Vader can do it, so can I,โ€ he quipped.

But beneath the humour lies truth โ€” the night couldโ€™ve been disastrous. Instead, it became a turning point.

โ€œThat moment taught me that control doesnโ€™t mean suppression. It means awareness. If I can breathe, I can perform. If I can perform, I can lead this band anywhere.โ€

And thatโ€™s exactly what heโ€™s done โ€” leading Ghost to stadium status, festival headlines, and an army of devoted fans dressed like clergy at a Satanic disco.

All because one night in Leeds, Tobias Forge couldnโ€™t breathe โ€” and decided to change everything.

โšก FINAL RIFF: FROM PANIC TO POWER

Ghostโ€™s shows are still some of the most electrifying, theatrical spectacles in rock. But now, behind the incense and inferno, thereโ€™s a performer who knows his limits โ€” and commands his stage not through fear, but through mastery.

Tobias Forge may have built his legend behind a mask, but itโ€™s the moment he had to take it off that made him truly unforgettable.

โ€œYou donโ€™t need to hide to be powerful,โ€ he said. โ€œYou just need to breathe.โ€

And breathe he does โ€” fire, faith, and a little bit of brimstone. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Cโ€™mon butt, letโ€™s raise a chalice to Tobias for turning panic into power.
Even Satanโ€™s frontman gets stage fright sometimes โ€” and thatโ€™s bloody tidy. ๐Ÿด๐Ÿค˜
