“It’s not just a festival… it’s a pilgrimage to the top of a Welsh mountain.”
There are festivals you can wander into from a train station, festivals where you’re parked five minutes from the arena, and festivals where everything is nice and flat.
Steelhouse Festival laughs at those festivals.
Perched high on Hafod-y-Dafal Farm above Ebbw Vale, Steelhouse is one of the most unique rock festivals anywhere in Europe. Every year thousands of rock and metal fans make the journey up the winding mountain roads for an unforgettable weekend of incredible music, breathtaking scenery, cold beers, and one of the friendliest atmospheres you’ll ever find.
If it’s your first visit, don’t panic. The journey up the mountain is all part of the adventure.
Here’s The Riff Report’s complete guide to getting there without losing your mind (or your clutch).
📍 Where Is Steelhouse Festival?
Steelhouse Festival takes place at:
Hafod-y-Dafal Farm
Beaufort
Ebbw Vale
Blaenau Gwent
South Wales
Unlike almost every other major UK festival, Steelhouse isn’t held in a city park or on farmland beside a motorway.
It’s literally built on the side of a mountain overlooking the stunning South Wales Valleys.
When you reach the top you’ll be rewarded with some of the most spectacular festival views anywhere in Britain.
On a clear day you can see for miles across South Wales.
🚗 Driving to Steelhouse Festival
For most people, driving is by far the easiest option.
As you approach Ebbw Vale you’ll begin seeing official Steelhouse Festival road signs directing traffic towards the venue.
Our advice?
Follow the festival signs rather than blindly trusting your sat-nav during the final few miles.
Festival traffic management is usually in place, and the organisers know the quickest routes onto the mountain.
⛰️ The Famous Mountain Road
Let’s address the question everyone asks…
“Is the road really that bad?”
Honestly?
No.
It’s narrow in places, it’s steep, and it winds its way up the mountain, but thousands of cars make the journey every single year without any problems.
Take your time.
Drive sensibly.
Enjoy the views.
You’ll also find plenty of festival marshals directing traffic throughout the weekend.
Remember:
🚗 Keep your speed down.
🚗 Be patient.
🚗 Expect queues during busy arrival times.
🚗 Let uphill traffic pass where appropriate.
🚗 Follow marshal instructions at all times.
This isn’t a race.
You’ll all be enjoying the same bands soon enough.
🚙 What Vehicle Can Get Up There?
One of the biggest myths surrounding Steelhouse is that you need a 4×4.
You don’t.
Every year people arrive in:
● Small hatchbacks
● Family saloons
● Campervans
● Estates
● SUVs
● Motorhomes
The roads are perfectly suitable for normal vehicles.
Just remember you’re driving on mountain roads rather than dual carriageways.
🚘 Parking
Festival parking is well organised, with marshals guiding vehicles into the correct areas.
Once parked, you’ll begin the next stage of the Steelhouse experience…
Walking.
🏕️ Camping – Prepare for a Bit of Exercise!
Let’s be honest.
Gravity isn’t always your friend at Steelhouse.
Depending on where you’re camping, expect:
🥾 Uneven ground
🥾 Slopes
🥾 Hills
🥾 A decent walk from the car
Don’t bring absolutely everything you own.
We’ve all seen someone trying to drag three gazebos, eight crates of lager, a barbecue, a camping chair, a cool box and half of IKEA up the mountain.
Don’t be that person.
Pack smart.
Your back will thank you later.

One minute it’s glorious sunshine.
Twenty minutes later you’re wondering whether Noah has started building another ark.

The closest railway station is:
Ebbw Vale Parkway
From there you’ll usually need either:
● the official festival shuttle bus (if operating)
● a pre-booked taxi
● a lift from friends
Book onward travel well in advance because local transport gets extremely busy during festival weekend.

Services are announced before the event, so keep an eye on festival updates for:
● Collection points
● Departure times
● Return journeys

What it offers instead is something increasingly rare…
A genuine community.
You’ll arrive as strangers.
You’ll leave with new friends.
And before you’ve even unpacked your tent, you’ll already be planning next year’s trip.
