โ€œItโ€™s not just a festivalโ€ฆ itโ€™s a pilgrimage to the top of a Welsh mountain.โ€

There are festivals you can wander into from a train station, festivals where youโ€™re parked five minutes from the arena, and festivals where everything is nice and flat.

Steelhouse Festival laughs at those festivals.

Perched high on Hafod-y-Dafal Farm above Ebbw Vale, Steelhouse is one of the most unique rock festivals anywhere in Europe. Every year thousands of rock and metal fans make the journey up the winding mountain roads for an unforgettable weekend of incredible music, breathtaking scenery, cold beers, and one of the friendliest atmospheres youโ€™ll ever find.

If itโ€™s your first visit, donโ€™t panic. The journey up the mountain is all part of the adventure.

Hereโ€™s The Riff Reportโ€™s complete guide to getting there without losing your mind (or your clutch).

๐Ÿ“ Where Is Steelhouse Festival?

Steelhouse Festival takes place at:

Hafod-y-Dafal Farm
Beaufort
Ebbw Vale
Blaenau Gwent
South Wales

Unlike almost every other major UK festival, Steelhouse isnโ€™t held in a city park or on farmland beside a motorway.

Itโ€™s literally built on the side of a mountain overlooking the stunning South Wales Valleys.

When you reach the top youโ€™ll be rewarded with some of the most spectacular festival views anywhere in Britain.

On a clear day you can see for miles across South Wales.

๐Ÿš— Driving to Steelhouse Festival

For most people, driving is by far the easiest option.

As you approach Ebbw Vale youโ€™ll begin seeing official Steelhouse Festival road signs directing traffic towards the venue.

Our advice?

Follow the festival signs rather than blindly trusting your sat-nav during the final few miles.

Festival traffic management is usually in place, and the organisers know the quickest routes onto the mountain.

โ›ฐ๏ธ The Famous Mountain Road

Letโ€™s address the question everyone asksโ€ฆ

โ€œIs the road really that bad?โ€

Honestly?

No.

Itโ€™s narrow in places, itโ€™s steep, and it winds its way up the mountain, but thousands of cars make the journey every single year without any problems.

Take your time.

Drive sensibly.

Enjoy the views.

Youโ€™ll also find plenty of festival marshals directing traffic throughout the weekend.

Remember:

๐Ÿš— Keep your speed down.

๐Ÿš— Be patient.

๐Ÿš— Expect queues during busy arrival times.

๐Ÿš— Let uphill traffic pass where appropriate.

๐Ÿš— Follow marshal instructions at all times.

This isnโ€™t a race.

Youโ€™ll all be enjoying the same bands soon enough.

๐Ÿš™ What Vehicle Can Get Up There?

One of the biggest myths surrounding Steelhouse is that you need a 4×4.

You donโ€™t.

Every year people arrive in:

โ— Small hatchbacks

โ— Family saloons

โ— Campervans

โ— Estates

โ— SUVs

โ— Motorhomes

The roads are perfectly suitable for normal vehicles.

Just remember youโ€™re driving on mountain roads rather than dual carriageways.

๐Ÿš˜ Parking

Festival parking is well organised, with marshals guiding vehicles into the correct areas.

Once parked, youโ€™ll begin the next stage of the Steelhouse experienceโ€ฆ

Walking.

๐Ÿ•๏ธ Camping โ€“ Prepare for a Bit of Exercise!

Letโ€™s be honest.

Gravity isnโ€™t always your friend at Steelhouse.

Depending on where youโ€™re camping, expect:

๐Ÿฅพ Uneven ground

๐Ÿฅพ Slopes

๐Ÿฅพ Hills

๐Ÿฅพ A decent walk from the car

Donโ€™t bring absolutely everything you own.

Weโ€™ve all seen someone trying to drag three gazebos, eight crates of lager, a barbecue, a camping chair, a cool box and half of IKEA up the mountain.

Donโ€™t be that person.

Pack smart.

Your back will thank you later.

๐ŸŽ’ Packing Like a Pro

The Welsh weather can beโ€ฆ

Interesting.

One minute itโ€™s glorious sunshine.

Twenty minutes later youโ€™re wondering whether Noah has started building another ark.

Pack for every season.

Essentials:

โœ” Waterproof coat

โœ” Warm hoodie

โœ” Walking boots or sturdy trainers

โœ” Extra socks

โœ” Portable charger

โœ” Sun cream

โœ” Sunglasses

โœ” Reusable water bottle

โœ” Power bank

โœ” Torch

โœ” Layers

โœ” Bin bags

โœ” Earplugs

๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ Expect Every Type of Weather

Steelhouse has become famous for experiencing every season in one weekend.

Donโ€™t trust the forecast completely.

Always prepare for:

โ˜€ Sunshine

๐ŸŒง Rain

๐ŸŒฌ Wind

๐ŸŒซ Mist

๐ŸŒˆ Then sunshine again.

Itโ€™s Wales, butt.

๐Ÿš† Travelling by Train

The closest railway station is:

Ebbw Vale Parkway

From there youโ€™ll usually need either:

โ— the official festival shuttle bus (if operating)

โ— a pre-booked taxi

โ— a lift from friends

Book onward travel well in advance because local transport gets extremely busy during festival weekend.

๐ŸšŒ Shuttle Buses

Steelhouse usually provides shuttle buses between key transport locations and the festival site.

Services are announced before the event, so keep an eye on festival updates for:

โ— Collection points

โ— Departure times

โ— Return journeys

โ— Ticket prices

If youโ€™re travelling without a car, these buses are a lifesaver.

๐Ÿš– Booking a Taxi

Leaving everything until midnight on Sunday is not recommended.

Book your taxi early.

Many local firms become fully booked long before the headliners finish.

๐Ÿ” Services at the Top

Once youโ€™ve conquered the mountain youโ€™ll find everything you need for an incredible weekend.

Expect:

๐Ÿ” Fantastic food vendors

๐Ÿ• Fresh pizzas

๐ŸŒฎ Street food

๐Ÿบ Real ale bars

๐Ÿน Cocktails

โ˜• Coffee stalls

๐Ÿ› Merchandise

๐ŸŽธ Band merch

๐Ÿค˜ Independent traders

๐Ÿšป Toilets

๐Ÿš‘ Medical facilities

๐Ÿ“ฑ Mobile Signal

Signal can vary depending on your network.

Sometimes youโ€™ll have full 5G.

Sometimes youโ€™ll have absolutely nothing.

Arrange meeting points with your mates before wandering off.

โ™ฟ Accessibility

Steelhouse continues to improve accessibility for festival-goers.

If you require accessible camping or assistance, contact the festival team before travelling so everything is arranged ahead of your arrival.

๐Ÿ“ธ The Best Photo Spots

Donโ€™t spend all weekend looking at your phone.

Steelhouse offers some incredible photo opportunities.

Make sure you capture:

๐ŸŒ„ Sunset over the valleys

๐ŸŽธ The main stage against the mountains

๐Ÿค˜ Crowd shots

๐Ÿ• Your campsite

๐Ÿ“ท The mountain panorama

Some of the best festival photographs in Britain are taken here every year.

โค๏ธ Steelhouse Etiquette

Steelhouse has earned its reputation because of the people.

Everyone looks after each other.

Be part of that tradition.

โœ” Help your neighbours.

โœ” Pick up your litter.

โœ” Respect the mountain.

โœ” Respect the volunteers.

โœ” Support the traders.

โœ” Cheer every band.

โœ” Have a laugh.

๐Ÿค˜ Why Steelhouse Is So Special

Thereโ€™s something magical about standing on top of a Welsh mountain with thousands of fellow rock fans while guitars echo across the valleys.

It isnโ€™t the biggest festival.

It doesnโ€™t try to be.

What it offers instead is something increasingly rareโ€ฆ

A genuine community.

Youโ€™ll arrive as strangers.

Youโ€™ll leave with new friends.

And before youโ€™ve even unpacked your tent, youโ€™ll already be planning next yearโ€™s trip.

๐Ÿ”ฅ The Riff Reportโ€™s Top Tips

โ— ๐Ÿ•’ Arrive early to avoid the biggest queues.

โ— ๐Ÿš— Drive carefully on the mountain roads.

โ— ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Wear comfortable footwear.

โ— ๐ŸŒง Pack for every weather forecast imaginable.

โ— ๐Ÿ”‹ Bring at least one power bank.

โ— ๐Ÿ’ง Stay hydrated.

โ— ๐Ÿบ Drink responsibly.

โ— ๐Ÿ“ธ Watch at least one sunset from the arena.

โ— ๐Ÿค˜ Support every band, even the ones youโ€™ve never heard before.

โ— โค๏ธ Be kind to your fellow rockers.

๐ŸŽค See You on the Mountain!

Steelhouse Festival isnโ€™t just another weekend awayโ€”itโ€™s one of the most unforgettable experiences in the UK rock calendar. The climb, the scenery, the music, the people, and the unmistakable Welsh spirit all combine to create something truly special.

So fuel up the car, load up the camping gear, stick your favourite playlist on, and point your wheels towards the valleys.

Because once those winding roads give way to mountain views and the sound of guitars starts drifting through the air, youโ€™ll know youโ€™ve arrived somewhere special.

Weโ€™ll see you at the top, butt! Come and say hello to The Riff Report team if you spot us around the siteโ€”weโ€™re always up for a chat, a selfie, and talking all things rock โ€˜nโ€™ roll.

๐Ÿค˜ Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. See you on the mountain! ๐Ÿ”๏ธ๐ŸŽธ

Michael

Michael

๐ŸŽธ About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise โ€” it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publicationโ€™s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist โ€” sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
