Imagine a world where your local gig venue isnโ€™t suddenly turned into luxury flats or another chain coffee shop. Nightmare fuel, right? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Well, thatโ€™s exactly what Music Venue Properties (MVP) is fighting against โ€” and theyโ€™re doing it in proper rock โ€™nโ€™ roll style: by buying the buildings themselves. ๐Ÿค˜

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Soโ€ฆ Who Are Music Venue Properties?

Music Venue Properties (MVP) is a Charitable Community Benefit Society โ€” basically a not-for-profit superhero team for small venues. ๐Ÿฆธโ€โ™‚๏ธ

They were founded in 2021 by the legends over at Music Venue Trust (MVT) โ€” the same people whoโ€™ve been waving the flag for grassroots live music for years. MVPโ€™s entire mission is simple but powerful:

Buy up grassroots venues before landlords or developers can, then lease them back to the operators on fair terms.

That way, the places where rock, punk, and metal are born can actually survive in the modern world of rent hikes, gentrification, and noise complaints from people who โ€œdidnโ€™t know it was a music venue when they moved in.โ€ ๐Ÿ™„

๐ŸŽฏ Why MVP Exists (And Why Itโ€™s Lush)

Over a third of the UKโ€™s grassroots music venues have closed in the last 20 years โ€” thatโ€™s hundreds of sticky-floored sanctuaries gone forever. ๐Ÿ˜ข

The problem? Most of them donโ€™t own their buildings. Theyโ€™re tenants, paying unpredictable rent to landlords who often see pound signs, not passion.

So MVP steps in with a tidy idea:

  • Raise money from the community (fans, punters, musicians).
  • Buy the freehold of the venue.
  • Lease it back on fair, long-term terms โ€” what they call a โ€œcultural lease.โ€

In other words: no more fear of eviction, no more surprise rent hikes, and no more landlords deciding โ€œrock just isnโ€™t our vibe.โ€ ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ

๐Ÿ’ธ How It Works โ€” โ€œOwn Our Venuesโ€

Their big campaign, โ€œOwn Our Venues,โ€ has already raised millions in community shares and investments. You can literally buy a share in keeping your favourite venue alive.

Hereโ€™s how it goes down:

  1. MVP raises funds from fans, artists, and the public.
  2. They purchase the venueโ€™s building (freehold).
  3. They hand the keys to the operator under a long-term, fair lease.
  4. The venue keeps booking gigs, serving pints, and blasting riffs โ€” with security for the future.

Think of it as turning your local into a fortress for live music. ๐Ÿฐ๐ŸŽถ

๐Ÿ”ฅ Venues Already Saved

This isnโ€™t just talk โ€” MVPโ€™s already made serious moves across the UK. Some of the first wave of saviour stories include:

๐ŸŽค The Ferret (Preston) โ€“ a cornerstone of Northern indie and rock, now protected from developers.

๐ŸŽธ The Bunkhouse (Swansea) โ€“ Welsh pride, mun! This absolute gem is now under MVPโ€™s wing.

๐Ÿป Le Pub (Newport) โ€“ another Welsh legend thatโ€™s hosted everything from DIY punk to ska chaos.

๐Ÿฅ The Snug (Atherton) โ€“ small but mighty, now forever a home for local bands.

๐ŸŽง The Booking Hall (Dover) โ€“ from travel hub to rock hub, and safe from corporate landlords.

And theyโ€™re not stopping there โ€” MVP launched a second community share offer in 2025 to snap up seven more iconic venues across the UK. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿ’ฌ Why It Matters for the Scene

If youโ€™ve ever moshed, cried, or spilled a pint in a tiny 200-cap venue, you already get it.

Grassroots venues are where everything starts. Itโ€™s where Arctic Monkeys, Idles, Bring Me The Horizon, and even bloody Ed Sheeran cut their teeth. These arenโ€™t just buildings โ€” theyโ€™re temples of sound.

Without them, thereโ€™s no next generation of headliners. No Download Festival. No Glasto secret sets. No scene.

MVP isnโ€™t just saving buildings โ€” theyโ€™re saving futures. And thatโ€™s something worth shouting about louder than a Marshall stack at full tilt. ๐Ÿ”Š

โš™๏ธ But Letโ€™s Be Realโ€ฆ

Buying the building doesnโ€™t magically fix everything. Venues still face rising energy costs, touring expenses, and audience fatigue.

But hereโ€™s the difference: with MVP, theyโ€™ve got stability.

  • They can plan ahead.
  • They can upgrade gear.
  • They can focus on music โ€” not rent battles.

Itโ€™s not a miracle, but itโ€™s a bloody good start. ๐Ÿ’ช

๐ŸŒ โ€œThe National Trust for Rock Venuesโ€

Thatโ€™s the best way to describe Music Venue Properties. Theyโ€™re not here to make a profit โ€” theyโ€™re here to preserve the soul of live music in the UK.

Theyโ€™re turning community passion into property power โ€” taking back the places where scenes are born and giving them to the people who actually care.

So if your local venueโ€™s running an MVP fundraiser, get involved! Throw a tenner in, share the campaign, or shout about it from the stage. Because one day, the band you helped keep afloat might be headlining a festival. ๐Ÿค˜

๐Ÿด The Riff Report Says:

โ€œMVP are doing the Lordโ€™s work โ€” if the Lord had tattoos, tinnitus, and a Telecaster.โ€ ๐ŸŽธ

Only in Britain would we turn property ownership into a punk revolution. And honestly? Thatโ€™s lush, mun.

Michael

Michael

๐ŸŽธ About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise โ€” it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publicationโ€™s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist โ€” sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
