From spinning fur to taco-shaped madness — a proper job celebration of the weirdest axes ever built!

🎤 Intro: When Rock Got Weird (And Wonderful)

There comes a point in every rocker’s life when a regular Les Paul just won’t cut it anymore. You need something louder, shinier, stranger — something that makes people in the front row go, “What the actual hell is that?”

From ZZ Top’s fuzzy whirligigs to Prince’s royal hieroglyphics, rock history is littered with absolute chaos on six strings. So grab a pint, strap in, and let’s take a look at the most insane, iconic, and utterly bonkers guitars ever to grace a stage. 🥁🔥

🧥 ZZ Top – The Spinning Fur Guitars

These weren’t just guitars — they were fashion statements from outer space. Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill unveiled their matching white, furry, spinning instruments during the “Legs” era, and the crowd went wild. They looked like electric sheep on acid — and they spun in unison!

🧔‍♂️ Fun fact: The fur was sourced from real sheepskin (before the days of PETA nightmares), and the guitars were custom-made by Dean Zelinsky. Proper 80s excess, mun.

🪕 Bill Bailey – Gary Hutchins Six-Neck Guitar

Britain’s most metal comedian doesn’t just shred jokes — he actually shreds. His six-neck guitar, built by luthier Gary Hutchins, looks like something you’d need a forklift to pick up. Bailey claims it’s “for when you can’t decide which tuning you fancy tonight.”

🎶 Fun fact: It covers everything from banjo to sitar tones. Only in the UK, butt.

🤘 Nigel Tufnel – The Marshall Stack Guitar

Because why play through your amp when you can be your amp? In true Spinal Tap fashion, Nigel Tufnel built a guitar shaped like a miniature Marshall stack — and yes, it goes to eleven.

😂 Quote: “This one doesn’t just make noise. It makes history.”

⚔️ Michael Angelo Batio – The Double & Quad Guitars

If you’ve ever thought, “I wish I could solo with both hands at once,” you’re thinking like Michael Angelo Batio. His double-neck and infamous quad guitar make him look like a metal tarantula — four necks, four pickups, endless riffs.

🔥 Fact: He once played both necks simultaneously on live TV, just to flex.

🎯 Rick Nielsen – The Five-Neck Beast

Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen looked at the double-neck and said, “Nah, not enough.” So he made a five-neck guitar. FIVE. It weighs nearly 14kg and looks like a weapon from a cartoon.

🎸 Bonus point: One neck is fretless, one is tuned differently, and one’s purely for showing off.

🐉 Steve Vai – The Hydra

This one isn’t a guitar — it’s a monster from the underworld. Part harp, part bass, part steampunk fever dream, Vai’s Hydra has multiple necks, harp strings, MIDI triggers, lights, and even dragon heads.

💀 Quote from Vai: “It took me years to tame the Hydra. Now it growls when I want it to.”

📦 Bo Diddley – The Square Guitar

Old-school cool. Bo Diddley made his own rectangular guitar in the 1950s because he didn’t like the way round guitars looked when he moved on stage. It became an icon of early rock ‘n’ roll style — minimal, mean, and absolutely tidy.

🎻 John Paul Jones – Triple Neck Mandolin

Led Zeppelin’s bassist didn’t just slap strings — he engineered madness. His triple-neck mandolin/bass/guitar hybrid made sure every track sounded like it was played by an army.

🎶 Best seen: During “Ten Years Gone” live. It’s musical witchcraft.

💜 Prince – The Love Symbol Guitar

A guitar shaped like his own name. Of course. The purple funk king designed it himself, and it screams “divine ego” in the best way. He used it during his “Love Symbol” era, and it remains one of the most jaw-dropping instruments ever made.

👑 Fun fact: It was custom-built by Jerry Auerswald and worth over $100,000.

❤️ Steve Vai – The Ibanez Triple-Neck “Red Heart” Guitar

Another Vai masterpiece — a triple-neck guitar shaped like a giant heart. Because nothing says “I love music” like a literal, playable organ.

🪶 Pat Metheny – Pikasso Guitar

42 strings. Let that sink in. This jazz wizard’s Pikasso guitar looks like an Escher painting come to life. Built by Linda Manzer, it’s got four necks, 42 strings, and zero shame.

🎨 Fun fact: It’s named “Pikasso” because it looks like something Picasso would have dreamt up after three espressos and a bottle of Merlot.

🪓 Gene Simmons – The Axe Bass

You can’t get more metal than turning your bass into a literal axe. Gene Simmons’ bass could double as a stage weapon — and probably has.

💀 Bonus: He had multiple versions made — all capable of making your ribs vibrate from ten rows back.

🥃 Michael Anthony – The Jack Daniel’s Bass

Van Halen’s bassist made sure his gear matched his lifestyle. His bass looked like a whiskey barrel and even had a “fill level.” Iconic, daft, and 100% rock ‘n’ roll.

🐦 John Entwistle – The Buzzard Bass

Designed by The Who’s thunderous bassist, this was sleek, deadly, and perfectly balanced. It looked like a fighter jet and sounded like one too.

🎵 Fun fact: Entwistle co-designed it with Warwick — it’s now a collector’s item.

⚾ John Fogerty – Baseball Bat Guitar

Fogerty’s all-American axe was shaped like a baseball bat. Subtle? Not even slightly. But it knocked it out of the park.

✝️ Ian Hunter – Maltese Cross Guitar

Glam rock’s flashiest relic. Hunter’s custom Maltese Cross became a glam icon — and was recently recreated by Gibson for charity.

👣 Bumblefoot – Vigier Flying Foot Guitar

Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (ex-Guns N’ Roses) plays a foot-shaped guitar. Because, why not? It’s surprisingly ergonomic and unbelievably ridiculous.

🌮 Andrew W.K. – The Taco Guitar

Party hard. Eat tacos. Play tacos. Andrew W.K.’s taco-shaped guitar sums up everything brilliant about being unhinged in rock music. 🌮

🧠 Misa Kitara – The Guitar MIDI Controller

Part synth, part touchscreen — this digital axe made the future look proper lush. It’s less a guitar, more a science experiment with riffs.

⚡ Dave Hill – Super Yob Guitar

Slade’s glam god Dave Hill designed this lightning bolt beauty himself. It’s shiny, silver, and utterly iconic.

⚡ Fun fact: It now lives in the V&A Museum, because glam rock is art.

🫠 John 5 – Lava Lamp Telecaster

It glows. It bubbles. It’s a lava lamp you can play. John 5 took Fender Telecaster madness to new heights with his psychedelic light-up axe.

☠️ Ginger Wildheart – Smiley Bones Guitar

Bones, smiles, and punk swagger — this guitar looks like it was made in a graveyard by a cartoonist. And that’s why it rules.

⚰️ Zakk Wylde – Graveyard Disciple

Coffin-shaped and deadly. Perfect for Sabbath riffs and funeral gigs alike.

🔵 Eric Bloom – Blue Öyster Cult Logo Guitar

If your band logo’s cool enough, why not turn it into an instrument? Bloom did just that. Pure cult power.

⭐ Bootsy Collins – Star-Shaped Space Bass

The funk god descended from another galaxy with a star bass covered in glitter and LEDs. It’s not just a bass — it’s a UFO. 👽

🔴 Brian May – The Red Special

Built by hand from fireplace wood, Brian’s “Red Special” isn’t weird by shape — but it’s wild in soul. One of the most iconic home-built guitars in rock history.

🪙 Todd Rundgren – Veleno Ankh Guitar

A fully metal guitar that looked like a disco relic. Rundgren’s Veleno Ankh shone like a mirrorball on stage.

🕶️ Dave Mustaine – Dean V Double Neck

Megadeth’s frontman needed twice the firepower. The double-neck Dean V is pure thrash royalty.

❤️ Rob Davis – Heart-Shaped Guitar

Mud’s guitarist built a guitar that looked like it belonged in a Valentine’s Day card — and it somehow worked.

☁️ Prince – The Yellow Cloud Guitar

Another Prince gem. Sleek, sexy, smooth curves — pure funk royalty in yellow lacquer.

👴 Rick Nielsen – Uncle Dick

Yes, it’s a guitar shaped like a man. Nielsen’s “Uncle Dick” is half guitar, half horror movie prop — and 100% iconic.

🧬 Michael Angelo Batio – Quad Guitar (Again!)

It deserves its own encore. The man literally built a four-headed monster and tamed it.

⚙️ James Hetfield – The Carl Guitar

Metallica’s frontman took recycling to a whole new level — a guitar made from car parts. It’s heavy metal in the most literal sense.

👔 Dan Hartman – The Bass Suit

Yes, a suit that’s also a bass. He wore it and played it live. Imagine being your own rhythm section!

📱 Stig Pedersen – The iPhone Bass

D-A-D’s bassist built a bass shaped like a giant iPhone. And the touchscreen worked. Forget “FaceTime” — this was “BassTime.”

🎸 Final Thoughts: The Louder, The Weirder, The Better

Rock ‘n’ roll has never been about following the rules — it’s about smashing them to bits with style and feedback. Whether it’s fur, flames, tacos or telephones, these guitars prove one thing: you can’t tame a true riff beast.

C’mon butt — which one’s your favourite? Drop it in the comments below and tell us what your dream ridiculous guitar would be. A kebab-shaped Flying V, maybe? 😜

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
